Book excerpt: The mechanical and rheo-optical properties of a styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer of a given chemical composition are dependent upon the morphology of the polymer as affected by the solvent system from which a polymer film is cast. Films cast from methyl ethyl ketone and from toluene are compared. Properties found to differ are the stress-strain curve, the birefringence-strain curve, stress relaxation, birefringence relaxation and the dynamic mechanical spectra. (Author).

They combine benign processing with a large variety of product properties - from stiff and transparent to tough and durable. The fact that styrene can be polymerized by different reaction mechanisms (radical, ionic and metal catalyzed) makes this line of products unique in regards to the variety of its properties and applications. The primary objective of this book is to provide a detailed understanding of structure and property relationships of styrenic polymers, and their specific use in various applications. By understanding basic chemistry, supermolecular assembly of block- and graft polymers and microscopic fracture mechanisms, the reader will be able to quickly derive macroscopic behavior and hence select the most suitable polymer for a given application. The second objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive overview about unique value propositions of styrenic polymers in different industries and applications. The reader will get an in-depth understanding of why specific styrenic polymers dominate in market segments like computer and printer housings, exterior automotive parts and the food packaging industry, and what the specific customer benefits of using these polymers are. Finally, the third objective is to provide an outlook for future product and application developments. Hence it serves not only as a quick reference guide for downstream industries, but also as a practical guide for students and researchers in this field of material science.

Book excerpt: A triblock copolymer of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) was blended with a high and a low molecular weight polybutadiene (designated as PB(H) and PB(L) respectively). Electron micrographs of these blends show that PB(L) was solubilized into the butadiene domains of the SBS; while PB(H) was present in a separate phase. Dynamic mechanical data of the SBS/PB(L) blends indicate the presence of an intermediate loss peak between those of the glass transitions of the styrene and butadiene blocks in SBS, which can be attributed to the slippage of untrapped entanglements of PB(L) chains. Similar data for blends containing PB(H) also shows an intermediate loss peak, which is, however, due to crystallization and melting of the poly-cis-butadiene chains. Dynamic mechanical data for crosslinked blends were also taken for comparison.

Book excerpt: Two symmetric triblock polystyrene-butadiene-polystyrene (SBS) copolymers with different styrene content were grafted with varying amounts of isobutyl-substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecules. The POSS octamers, R'R7Si8O12 were designed to contain a single silane functional group, R', which was used to graft onto the dangling 1,2 butadienes in the polybutadiene block and seven identical organic groups, R=isobutyl (iBu). Morphology and phase transitions of these iBu-POSS modified SBS were investigated using small angle X-ray scattering and rheological methods. It was observed that POSS with isobutyl moiety, when grafted to the polybutadiene (PB), appears to show a high affinity to stay within the PB domain; effectively, they enhance the segregation between butadiene and styrene domains. This causes a shift in the phase diagram to lower styrene content. From the rheology, we observed that values of storage modulus, G', at temperatures below the order-disorder transition increase due to the grafting of iBu-POSS. These observations lead us to conclude that the local order morphology between styrene and butadiene domains was better preserved due to the enhanced segregation forced by iBu-POSS.

Book excerpt: The molecules of block and graft copolymers are molecules of a higher order; they consist of homopolymer subchains which are interconnected by chemical valence bonds. This structural com plexity is manifested in the unusual behavior of block and graft copolymers both in solution and in bulk. Many types of interac tions are possible in block and graft copolymers in the solid state. Polymer subchains of one molecule can interact with other polymer subchains which may belong to the same molecule or to different molecules. Since polymer chains of chemically different composition are usually incompatible, thermodynamically unfavorable as well as thermodynamically favorable interactions exist in the solid state. In solutions of block and graft copolymers, the sit uation becomes even more complex, because interactions between the solvent molecules and the various subchains of the copolymer mole cules occur in addition to the interactions between the polymer chains. This multitude of interactions gives rise to a wide spec trum of colloidal and morphological properties which have no paral lel in less complex polymer systems such as homopolymers or random copolymers. Research on the colloidal and morphological behavior of block and graft copolymers is a relatively new field of endeavor. It started in 1954, when F. M. Merrett fractionated mixtures of grafted na tural rubber with the corresponding homopolymers and observed that colloidal sols were formed at certain points during his fractional precipitations.

Book excerpt: A novel hybrid organic/inorganic tri-block copolymer of polystyrene-butadiene-polystyrene (SBS) containing grafted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecules was synthesized by a hydrosilation method. The POSS molecules were designed to contain a single silane functional group, which was used to graft onto the dangling 1,2 butadienes in the polybutadiene soft block. Unlike typical free radical copolymerizations commonly used for many other POSS incorporations investigated, this synthesis method allows us to make a series of polymers with varying amounts of POSS without any change to the overall degree of polymerization or structure of the main SBS backbone. This gives us a unique opportunity to study the POSS behavior in the matrix and know that all differences are solely due to the POSS grafted to the soft continuous butadiene phase. X-ray diffraction revealed that the grafted POSS are very well dispersed in the matrix of the hybrid polymer, which is compared to the strong phase segregation observed in a POSS physical blend. Small-angle X-ray scattering indicates that although the cylindrical morphology attributed to the styrene component was not altered by the presence of POSS, but attachment of POSS to the continuous phase (polybutadiene block) causes the packing of discrete phase (polystyrene blocks) to lack long-range features. Results of dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the POSS has sterically hindered the motion of the polybutadiene blocks. More interestingly, the presence of POSS in the soft segments also resulted in a tapered tan peak associated with the glass transition of polystyrene and a higher tensile strength when deformed at temperature near Tg of polystyrene without affecting the elongational behavior of SBS at temperatures above Tg of polybutadiene.

Book excerpt: Using block copolymers for large-area periodic structure fabrication is of great interest because of the potential for low fabrication costs and simplicity of the processing. The concept is that by selective inclusion of the nanoparticles into one of the blocks of a self-assembling copolymer, the nanoparticles are forced into a defined spatial arrangement determined by the phase morphology of the copolymer. Although copolymers can form well defined structures, they inherently have a 'polycrystalline' structure in the bulk, meaning that there is no long-range order of the domains. This thesis addresses both the effect of inclusion of the nanoparticles and the long range ordering of block copolymer domains. The first part of the thesis focuses on the study of the effect of nanoparticle inclusions on the phase morphology of the poly(styrene-butadiene) diblock and poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene) triblock copolymers. For gold inclusions, it was found that even at relatively low concentrations of inclusions (less than 1 wt./vol.%) the block copolymer phase morphology is altered from that of the native copolymer. By contrast to the block copolymer-gold system, no significant changes in bulk morphology is observed for similar fullerene concentrations. In the second part of the thesis, the evolution of the order in cylinder forming poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene) triblock copolymer thin films as a function of the type of solvent vapor, exposure time to the saturated vapors and substrate surface energy is discussed. Solvent vapors of dimethoxyethane, ethyl acetate and cyclohexanone were found to be the most effective for our polymer films. Solvent vapors differing in their selectivity towards the block copolymer domains have different kinetics of ordering which is explained in terms of the difference in the interaction of the solvent between the two different copolymer blocks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Block polymers represent another milestone in the preparation of polymers of controlled structure. Catalysts and polymerization methods that allowed the preparation of polymers in which the stereo- and geometric isomerism of the monomer units could be con trolled have indeed been among the major developments in polymer science during the last decade. The synthesis of block polymers, in which the sequence length of the comonomer units can be con trolled, portends equally important developments in the science and technology of polymers. The papers collected in this volume cover primarily the pro ceedings of the most recent symposium on block polymers, sponsored by the Division of Polymer Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. It was held in New York City during the Society's 158th National Meeting in September, 1969. Additional contributions from selected authors were invited especially for this book to achieve the most up-to-date account of the advances that have been made since the development of the thermoplastic elastomers that first brought into focus this important area of research. The first two papers in this volume draw attention to the various problems that should be considered in the preparation of block polymers of precisely defined structure from styrene and butadiene or isoprene by anionic polymerization. Characterization of block polymers presents many problems and there is a paucity of systematic work in this area. Attention has been given to the di lute solution properties of block polymers, however, in one of the papers in this volume.

Book excerpt: Block copolymers represent an important class of multi-phase material, which have received very widespread attention, particularly since their successful commercial development in the mid-1960s. Much of the interest in these polymers has arisen because of their rather remarkable micro phase morphology and, hence, they have been the subject of extensive microstructural examination. In many respects, the quest for a comprehensive interpretation of their structure, both theoretically and experimentally, has not been generally matched by a corresponding enthusiasm for developing structure/property relationships in the context of their commercial application. Indeed, it has been left largely to the industrial companies involved in the development and utilization of these materials to fulfil this latter role. While it is generally disappointing that a much greater synergism does not exist between science and technology, it is especially sad in the case of block copolymers. Thus these materials offer an almost unique opportunity for the application of fundamental structural and property data to the interpretation of the properties of generally processed artefacts. Accordingly, in this book, the editor has drawn together an eminent group of research workers, with the specific intention of highlighting some of those aspects of the science and technology of block copolymers that are potentially important if further advances are to be made either in material formulation or utilization. For example, special consideration is given to the relationship between the flow properties of block copo lymers and their microstructure.
