Book excerpt: Distinguished scholars from both sides of the Atlantic make a major contribution to medieval literary studies in contributions ranging from early epic to Fernando de Rojas. Studies on cuaderna via' verse and the poets of the cancionero' figure prominently, as do the Libro de buen amor' and Celestina'; these are complemented by individual essays on texts outside the mainstream, on the language and versification of the period, on the prose writers of the fifteenth century, and on literary activity in Catalonia, Galicia and Portugal. The collection demonstrates the range of interest and approach characteristic of recent Hispanic scholarship, and provides new insights into the medieval mind at work in the Iberian peninsula. IAN MACPHERSON is former Professor of Spanish, University of Durham; RALPH PENNY is Professor of Romance Philology, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London. Book Synopsis Love and Remembrance by : Frank A. Domínguez
Download or read book Love and Remembrance written by Frank A. Domínguez and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jorge Manrique was the greatest poet of fifteenth-century Castile and one of the three or four greatest in Spanish literature. Frank A. Domínguez offers here an introduction to Manrique's poetry and the first book-length study of him in English in fifty years. After presenting the biographical and historical context of Manrique's poetry, Domínguez examines the poet's love lyrics, describing the large fund of commonplaces and forms that Manrique's verses share with those of other poets of his age. Manrique's highly stylized language and parallel verse structures express the obsession of the lover with the beloved. Moreover, his attention to parallel construe the world's greatest. In treating the Coplas, Domínguez not only offers a sensitive reading of the elegy but also examines questions of text, structure, and style. Like the love lyrics, the Coplas present a high incidence of parallel structures that make for clarity and symmetry. Domínguez also finds that the complex stylistic relationships of the verses provide the Coplas with a unity that is deeper and more fundamental than has generally been perceived. This study, eclectic in its critical approaches, will be the standard English work on Manrique for years to come.

Book Synopsis A New History of English Metre by : Martin J. Duffell
Download or read book A New History of English Metre written by Martin J. Duffell and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the hundred years since the last major history of English metre was published, dramatic changes have occurred in both the way that poets versify in English and the way that scholars analyze verse. 'Free' verse is now firmly established alongside regular metre, and linguistics, statistics, and cognitive theory have contributed to the analysis of both. This new study covers the history of English metre up to the twenty-first century and compares a variety of modern theories to explain it. The result is a concise and up-to-date guide to metre for all students and teachers of English poetry." --Book Jacket.

Book Synopsis Love Songs from al-Andalus by : Otto Zwartjes
Download or read book Love Songs from al-Andalus written by Otto Zwartjes and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love Songs from al-Andalus presents an updated survey of the debates concerning Andalusian strophic poetry and their Kharjas. Attention is focused on the texts themselves and their literary implications as testimonies of the multicultural and multilingual society of al-Andalus. Since languages and alphabets of the three major religions have been used, these texts are studies historically, prosodically, thematically and stylistically and are related to the three literary traditions. One of the novelties of this study is the fact that it has been based upon the most updated edition and interpretations of the texts introducing emendations in over a third of its contents and making obsolete most of the hundreds of previous articles and books on the topic. Another novelty is the fact that stylistic features have been studied according to the Arabic model, casting new light on them. The survey of thematic relationships and the analysis of code-switching phenomena add weight to the conclusions of this research.
Book Synopsis Medieval Lyric by : William Doremus Paden

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An essential volume for medievalists and scholars of comparative literature, Medieval Lyric opens up a reconsideration of genre in medieval European lyric. Departing from a perspective that asks how medieval genres correspond with twentieth-century ideas of structure or with the evolution of poetry, this collection argues that the development of genres should be considered as a historical phenomenon, embedded in a given culture and responsive to social and literary change.".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Drawing on critics ranging from Bakhtin and Curtius to Harold Bloom and Maria Corti, Orphans of Petrarch offers extended discussions of these major poets, and a net exposition of the development of Spanish Renaissance poetics, from the point of view of modern critical theory. Contributing to the discussion about imitation and belatedness, and grounded in both philology and cultural theory, it is the first book to integrate the "Spanish difference" into an understanding of Renaissance lyric as a European phenomenon."--BOOK JACKET.
