This volume includes a discussion of the history and development of plant nematology, the status of research on this field, and information pertaining to professional societies and publications. It also discusses nematode morphology, anatomy, taxonomy, and ecology, including the origin of plant nematodes and population dynamics. It features drawing examples of free-living and animal parasitic nematodes. This treatise is written to provide an up-to-date reference source for students, lecturers, and research professionals in plant parasitology, specifically nematology, and related fields.

Book excerpt: This aesthetically unique book combines ecological, morphological and anatomical, as well as phylogenetic studies on plant material in a largely unexplored dry mountain region above the timberline. It offers the first comparative analysis of hundreds of plants - annuals, perennial herbs and dwarf shrubs - in an area of 87,000 km2 at altitudes from 2600 to 6150 m above sea level in the Western Himalaya. Characteristic landscape pictures of all major vegetation types and maps show at which locations and altitudes the individual species of vascular plants are distributed, while macroscopic plant pictures and plant age are related to high-quality micro-sections and micro-photographs. The anatomical features of 345 dicotyledons were characterized using the published coding systems and those of 155 monocotyledones were characterized on the basis of a newly developed key. The number of annual rings and anatomical features of the xylem and phloem of dicots are compared and related to different ecological conditions within this extremely dry and cold environment. The ecological and anatomical characterization is used to create a phylogenetic tree based on nucleotide sequences, and indicates which features are genetically stable and which ones are modified by environmental factors. The book appeals to scientists in the fields of plant taxonomy, morphology, anatomy and ecology.

Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book provides comprehensive data on the geographical distribution, vegetative and floral morphology, anatomy, embryology, chromosome number, chemical features and important genera and economic importance of 334 families of the dicots and the monocots. Evolutionary and phylogenetic tendencies are discussed, especially for the taxa of disputed taxonomic assignment. Special features like endemism and threatened species are pointed out for selected taxa. The book will be useful for scientists and advanced students of the plant sciences specializing in plant taxonomy and phylogeny. It can also serve as supplementary reading for researchers and students in the agricultural sciences.

This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 1233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, 9C, in two parts, covers the Brachyura. With the publication of the ninth volume in the Treatise on Zoology: The Crustacea, we departed from the sequence one would normally expect. Some crustacean groups, mainly comprising the Decapoda, never had a French version produced, and the organization and production of these “new” chapters began independently from the preparation of the other chapters and volumes. Originally envisioned to encompass volume 9 of the series, it quickly became evident that the depth of material for such a volume must involve the printing of separate fascicles. The new chapters have now been completed, and the production of volume 9 was started while volumes 3 through 8 were (and in part still are) in preparation; with this vol. 9C-I & II this volume 9 is now concluded; vols. 1-5 have also been published and vols. 6-8 are being prepared.

The following chapters are mostly devoted to the Chilopoda or centipedes, extensively treated from the point of view of external and internal morphology, physiology, reproduction, development, distribution, ecology, phylogeny and taxonomy. All currently recognized suprageneric and generic taxa are considered. Additional chapters deal with the two smaller myriapod classes, the Symphyla and the Pauropoda.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Morphology, Taxonomy, and Ecology of the Peridiniales As a preliminary to this program the organisms in the samples were sorted according to groups and each group was submitted to a systematist for identification and analysis. The author selected the Peridineae (dino flagellata) for his own special study. These introductory remarks have been made in or der to give some idea of the origin of the material and of the general scientific inquiry of which this report forms a part. The discussion that follows is restricted entirely to the peridinians. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This part B of the fourth volume of The Crustacea contains chapters on: ● Crustaceans in the Biosphere ● Crustaceans and Mankind ● Crustaceans in Art ● Orders Lophogastrida, Stygiomysida, and Mysida [collectively known as Mysidacea] As evident from the number 4B tagged to this volume, vol. 4 as originally planned had to be split into two fascicles, 4A and 4B, simply because of the numbers of pages covered by the various contributions meant for volume 4. The chapters in this book grew out of those in the French edition volumes 7(II) and 7(III)(A). Overall, this constitutes the seventh tome published in this English series, viz., preceded by volumes 1 (2004), 2 (2006), 9A (2010), 9B (2012), 3 (2012), and 4A (2013). Readers/users should note that from vol. 4A onward we have had to abandon publishing the chapters in the serial sequence as originally envisaged by the late Prof. J. Forest, because the various contributions, i.e., both the updates and the entirely new chapters, have become available in a more or less random order.
