Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Times of John Wycliffe: The Morning Star of the Reformation It is much to be hoped that the increased attention now given to the Reformer's character and writings under the impulse of the Quincentenary Commemor ation of his death in 1384 will lead not only to a demand for the publication of his hitherto unprinted works, but to an estimate of his place in history which shall deepen our gratitude to God for the great teachers by whom He has spoken to every age, and awaken a deeper comprehension of the long and wonderful chain of events by which faith and freedom have been secured in our own beloved country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Thought to the Reformation Man has no deeper or wider interest than theology; none deeper, for however much he may change, he never loses his love of the many questions it covers; and none wider, for under whatever law he may live he never escapes from its spacious shade; nor does he ever find that it speaks to him in vain or uses a voice that fails to reach him. Once the present writer was talking with a friend who has equal fame as a statesman and a man of letters, and he said, Every day I live, Politics, which are affairs of Man and Time, interest me less, while Theology, which is an affair of God and Eternity, interests me more. As with him, so with many, though the many feel that their interest is in theology and not in dogma. Dogma, they know, is but a series of resolutions framed by a council or parliament, which they do not respect any the more because the parliament was composed of ecclesiastically-minded persons; while the theology which so interests them is a discourse touching God, though the Being so named is the God man con ceived as not only related to himself and his world but also as rising ever higher with the notions of the self and the world. Wise books, not in dogma but in theology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Books for Bible Students, Vol. 1: The Dawn of the Reformation I have entitled this little work The Dawn of the Reformation. My purpose is to trace the various influences and forces both within and without the Church, which produced the great revolution of the sixteenth century. At what hour dawn begins is always a matter of dispute, and depends largely on local circumstances. But one thing is certain. A new day has begun long before the average worker has commenced his toil. So with the Reformation. The study of its causes cannot commence with Erasmus or Savonarola; its methods and results were to some extent settled for it in the century before Luther or Cranmer. My narrow limits have compelled me to omit many things of interest, and to compress into a few lines others which demanded as many pages. I have constantly realised that to write a small history is more difficult than to write one of larger margins. In what I have included, as well as in what I have omitted, the understanding of the Reformation and its causes has alone had weight. If it be objected that I have given a disproportionate space to Wyclif, or made him bulk larger than he did in his own day, I must plead that his life has scarcely received the attention it deserves. The materials, in fact, for estimating his work and character have but recently become generally available. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preludes to the Reformation: Or From Dark to Day in Europe The writer of the following work trusts that its title, 'preludes to the Reformation, ' expresses accurately its nature and object. In considering any great crisis in the world's history, we must look not only at the immediate causes of it, or the prominent actors in it, but we must also trace the preparations which have been made for it through the ages. These antecedents altogether elude the cursory attention given to them by a large proportion of the readers of history. The river rolls onward in its subterranean course; but they do not care to observe its windings, or the caverns through which it has passed, until it again bursts forth into the full blaze of day, and pours its fertilizing tide over a barren waste, so as to clothe it with rich vegetation. They admire the grandeur of the thunder-storm, but they do not consider the manner of the gradual formation Of the store Of electric forces which have caused it suddenly to roll down the valleys and to waken the echoes of the mountains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of the Reformation, Vol. 2 A critic might also claim that I have no right to close the volume with Constance. Divisions of time are generally arbitrary; but, on the whole, Constance seems to me the real end of an epoch. Any other term has the greater defect of making a gap between two things which were essentially continuous, the New Learning and the Reformation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ballads of the English Reformation Of the five ballads contained in the following pages, those of John Brown's martyrdom and Hugh Latimer are the only ones in which I have taken leave to draw upon my imagination. The others are simply versified history. And in the case of the two where I have employed a certain amount of fiction, I have followed, nevertheless, the facts of history so far as they go, as the, reader may see by referring to the Notes. I would bespeak an indulgent criticism for these verses, on the plea that a writer of ballads is not bound to achieve a high poetic flight. I conceive that the cadence of metre will of itself do something to heighten the effect of a striking narrative; and that, for this reason alone, it is worth while to versify a tale which one would have to abide in the memory and heart of the reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation Dawn It is believed that the present work is not untimely. In parts of the Protestant Church there has been, since the days of the Tractarian movement in England, a turning toward Rome. The righteousness and benefits of the Reformation are questioned among those who owe their culture and freedom to its liberating achievements. In recent years the Papacy, in its zeal to re-establish its waning power, has attempted to re-write the history of the great Protestant movement, and, in the interests of the Roman Church, to overthrow commonly accepted facts. In our country the Papal power, with smooth plausibility, is aggressive and contemptuous in its attitude toward Protestantism. Under these circumstances, it has been thought well to go over the ground once more, and in a judicial spirit investigate the facts. The character and tendencies of Romanism have been inquired into, and plainly set forth under the illumination of history. The principles of the reformers have again been brought under examination in the light of modern progress. The results of this investigation are presented in the present work. In its preparation, recognized Roman Catholic as well as evangelical Protestant authorities have been freely consulted and quoted. Agnostic or skeptical writers, who make a point of depreciating the Reformation in favor of the Renaissance, have not been neglected. The terrors and remorse she continued to suffer even while sharing his love, and becoming the convert of his opinions, suficiently attested the fact.
