Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book On March 19th, 2020 the world is locking down to deal with the Covid 19 pandemic, and Joe The Journey of One Tortoise is an autobiography. Let me take you on Journey from my days as a young man in Florida to my time in the Marines living in Japan to now residing in Eastern North Carolina. With great humility and awareness, I realize how blessed my life has been, and like just about everyone, it has not been without many struggles along the way. The purpose of this book is simple; I thought my Journey was worth sharing, and I know it will resonate with many, inspire, and maybe even motivate you to share your life’s Journey. I started thinking about writing this book around late 2018 and put words on paper in late 2020. As we all know, COVID-19 wreaked havoc in our world; too many passed away, so take a pause and give thanks that you are still among the living. I reflected greatly on this time in our world and how it’s changed many things. A little bit about me, I am originally from Tamp, Florida, and I will always be a Floridian at heart. I am a Christian, Husband, father, and Marine veteran. I live in New Bern, North Carolina, with my lovely wife Camille and our brown pit bull (Sheba). I enjoy reading, church, friends, and on occasion playing chess. In our fast-paced world, so many seem focused on titles. Let me tell you, you are so much more than the few titles you are fortunate to hold. I challenge you to be inspiring, an encourager, loving, and please, just be yourself.

Book Synopsis International Football as Cultural Diplomacy by : Peter J. Beck
Download or read book International Football as Cultural Diplomacy written by Peter J. Beck and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-05 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on wide-ranging archival research, this authoritative new history examines the cultural diplomatic role played by British football in international affairs, British foreign policy, and international football during the 1930s. For British governments, soccer diplomacy emerged as a favoured instrument of soft power when facing Hitler’s Germany, Mussolini’s Italy, Hirohito’s Japan, and Stalin’s Russia on and off the field. Examining the evolving relationship between successive governments and the Football Association, this book records how governments, though publicly espousing the distinctive autonomy of British sport, pursued privately a progressively interventionist role regarding international matches played by England and Football League clubs. Embedding its central themes in the wider context of international relations, the war of ideas between the liberal democracies and the dictatorships, and international football, the book also interrogates one of the most shocking moments in British sporting history, when England players gave Nazi salutes in Berlin in 1938, an episode in which virtue signalling was used in support of footballing appeasement. Offering readers an informed historical perspective on some of the modern world’s most significant issues, from the divide between dictatorships and liberal democracies to the use of sport as cultural diplomacy aka cultural propaganda, this book is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the history of Britain, sport history, football, international politics, diplomacy or international institutions.

Book Synopsis U.S. Army Divisions of the Pacific War by : Stephen R. Taaffe
Download or read book U.S. Army Divisions of the Pacific War written by Stephen R. Taaffe and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2024-08-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new narrative and analytic history of the twenty U.S. Army divisions that fought in the Pacific War. Despite the prevailing view that the Marine Corps bore the brunt of the fighting in the Pacific War, the men of the US Army played a decisive role in the conflict. Indeed, GIs did most of the war’s heavy lifting on the ground by conducting more amphibious assaults and prosecuting more operations than the Marines. By the end of the war there were 1.77 million U.S. Army troops in the Pacific and Asia, compared to the USMC’s 484,000. The Pacific was as much the Army’s war as the fighting in the European theater. The U.S. Army deployed twenty combat divisions to fight in the Pacific, including famous ones such as the 1st Cavalry Division and the 25th “Tropic Lightning” Division. Most were infantry, and included Regular, National Guard and draftee divisions. The divisions were deployed and maneuvered by theater, field army, and corps commanders around the Pacific’s geostrategic chessboard to battle and defeat the Japanese. The Army may have wanted its divisions to be interchangeable and uniform, but this proved impossible. Their quality and performance depended upon their resources, the geography and terrain on which they fought, experience, leadership, and organizational culture. Historians, though, have made little effort to examine their records in a systematic way before now. In addition, almost all of the Army’s divisions, some after admittedly rocky starts, became units capable of winning their engagements. Indeed, not a single Army division fighting the Japanese during the American counteroffensive across the Pacific was completely destroyed in combat. Whatever problems these divisions faced tended to grow out of the society that produced them, not fundamental flaws in Army doctrine. This is a tribute to the Army as a whole and to the twenty divisions that the Army deployed against the Japanese. This new history uses a narrative approach to describe and analyze each division's history, characteristics, and battles during the conflict, concluding with an assessment of their battlefield records, taking into account the innumerable factors affecting their combat performance.
