Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theatre of Les Waters: More Like the Weather combines original writings from Les Waters with short essays by a wide range of his collaborators, creating a personal and multi-faceted portrait of an influential director, revered mentor, and inspirational theatre artist. The book begins with a critical introduction of Waters’s work, followed by essays written by a wide range of Waters's collaborators over the past four decades. These essays are framed by shorter pieces of writing by Waters himself: reflections, inspirations, observations, and personal anecdotes. At the heart of this book lies the notion that the director’s central position in theatrical production is defined by collaboration and that a study of directing should take into account how a director works with playwrights, designers, actors, stage managers, and dramaturgs to turn artistic vision into concrete reality on stage. An insightful resource for early career or student directors in theatre programs, The Theatre of Les Waters sheds light on the art of theatre directing by exploring the work of a major theatre artist whose accomplished career sits at the heart of American theatre in the 21st century. Drawing on aspects of memoir, case study, interview, miscellany, biography, and criticism, this is also an enlightening read for anyone with an interest in how theatre artists bring their creative vision to life.

Book excerpt: When Theatre for Youth: Twelve Plays with Mature Themes was published in 1986, it met a need for plays that could help young people deal with some of the more difficult realities of life. Responding to the sweeping changes in society over the succeeding thirty years, Coleman A. Jennings and Gretta Berghammer have assembled a new collection of plays that reflects not only on themes such as aging, death and dying, friendship, courage, conformity, maturation, sexuality, and struggles with moral judgment but also on gender identity, poverty, diversity, and discrimination. Theatre for Youth II: More Plays with Mature Themes presents twelve plays, nine of them new to this anthology, that offer a rich variety of original stories (The Tomato Plant Girl, The Arkansaw Bear, Super Cowgirl and Mighty Miracle), compelling adaptations (The Afternoon of the Elves, Broken Hearts, Courage!), historical drama (Mother Hicks, Johnny Tremain), diverse themes (La Ofrenda, The Transition of Doodle Pequeño), friendship (The Selfish Giant), and future societies (With Two Wings). As these plays explore some of the most challenging themes for today’s youth, including the difficulties of single parenthood, divorce, race relations, sexuality, and gender discrimination, they share messages fundamental to us all: open your imagination and dare to dream; embrace life; honor your personal passion, beliefs, and creativity; take a risk; and love with all your heart.

Book excerpt: Afong Moy is fourteen years old when she’s brought to the United States from Guangzhou Province in 1834. Allegedly the first Chinese woman to set foot on U.S. soil, she has been put on display for the American public as “The Chinese Lady.” For the next half-century, she performs for curious white people, showing them how she eats, what she wears, and the highlight of the event: how she walks with bound feet. As the decades wear on, her celebrated sideshow comes to define and challenge her very sense of identity. Inspired by the true story of Afong Moy’s life, THE CHINESE LADY is a dark, poetic, yet whimsical portrait of America through the eyes of a young Chinese woman.

Book excerpt: For two years now, the Belgian theatre NTGent and the Berlin based Verbrecher Verlag have been publishing the series The Golden Books: Books on the theory and practice of contemporary performance art, on individual plays and general social questions. For the 5th volume, after months of cultural lockdown, when live arts were in a state of emergency and the whole institution rethought their priorities, NTGent asked more than 100 of the most influential artists and intellectuals in the world the question: Why theatre? Why is this art form so unique, so beautiful, so indispensable? From classical theatre to performance art and dance, from activism to political theatre and the performativity of everyday life, authors of all continents and generations delivered short essays, memories, manifestos, letters. Moments of aesthetic epiphany meet strong emotion, critical insights into the problems of representation and populism compete with utopian texts about the theatre of the future: more than 100 voices about the state of performing arts 2020. With contributions from Mohammad Al Attar, Lola Arias, Hector Aristizábal, Back to Back Theatre, Yael Bartana, Vincent Baudriller, Jérôme Bel, Chokri Ben Chikha (Action Zoo Humain), Bread and Puppet Theatre, Tania Bruguera, Luanda Casella, Nora Chipaumire, Benny Claessens, Colectivo LASTESIS, Kelly Copper (Nature Theatre of Oklahoma), Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Mihaela Drăgan, Radha D'Souza, Tania El Khoury, Nicoleta Esinencu, Douglas Estevam (MST), Tim Etchells (Forced Entertainment), Cibele Forjaz, Oliver Frljić, Gob Squad, Julien Gosselin, Sébastien Hendrickx, Florentina Holzinger, Hsin-Chien Huang, Isabelle Huppert, Manuela Infante, Christiane Jatahy, Jojo & Joyee (House of Muchness), John Jordan, Stefan Kaegi (Rimini Protokoll), Alexander Karschnia (andcompany&Co.), Susanne Kennedy, William Kentridge, Amir Reza Koohestani, Aino Laberenz, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Ursina Lardi, Jan Lauwers (Needcompany), Marco Layera, James Leadbitter (The Vacuum Cleaner), Frie Leysen, Angélica Liddell, Matthias Lilienthal, Édouard Louis, Florian Malzacher, Katie Mitchell, Sanja Mitrović, Ariane Mnouchkine, Ermanna Montanari & Marco Martinelli (Teatro Delle Albe), Maia Morgenstern, Chantal Mouffe, Yolanda Mpelé, Rabih Mroué, Kornel Mundruzcó, Ogutu Muraya, Nganji Mutiri, Jeton Neziraj, Daniela Nicolò & Enrico Casagrande (MOTUS), Boris Nikitin, Mamela Nyamza, Markus Öhrn, Toshiki Okada, Suzanne Osten, Thomas Ostermeier, Bouchra Ouizguen, Lies Pauwels, Luk Perceval, Alain Platel, René Pollesch, Philippe Quesne, Mokhallad Rasem, Milo Rau, Falk Richter, Tiago Rodrigues, Kathrin Röggla, Pia Maria Roll & Hanan Benammar, Didier Ruiz, Amir Sabra (Stereo48), Farah Saleh, Fabian Scheidler, Dennis Seidel, Kirill Serebrennikov, She She Pop, Buhlebezwe Siwani, Mårten Spångberg, Veit Sprenger (Showcase Beat Le Mot), Lara & Jonas Staal, Botho Strauß, Tea Tupajić, Carole Umulinga Karemera, Igor Vamos (Yes Men), Ivo van Hove, Gisèle Vienne, Dmitry Vilensky (Chto Delat), Marc-Antoine Vumilia, Sasha Waltz, Miet Warlop, Joanna Warsza, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Zentrum für politische Schönheit, Dominique Ziegler

Book excerpt: Theatre Worlds in Motion aims to clarify the different theatre traditions and practices in Western Europe from a historical and sociological perspective. The book grew out of a perceived need among theatre scholars who had recognised that, while they understood the theatre system of their own country, they often found it difficult to discover how it compared with other countries. The chapters analyse the basic components and dynamics of theatre systems in seventeen Western European nations in order to elucidate how the systems function in general and how they vary in different cultures. The book provides a sense of what has been happening recently in particular countries, and indicates how the theatre systems have developed over time and have led to the current practices and structures. Each national chapter considers the historical tradition and place of theatre within the country and analyses the role of the state in fostering theatre during the last fifty years. Material from the national chapters has been used in two general chapters at the beginning and end of the book to provide an overview to developments in all Western Europe. The introductory chapter on decentralisation discusses the tendency amongst governments to encourage cultural development outside the national capital by providing subsidy for regional theatre venues and theatre companies and, in many cases, by developing the decision-making and budgetary powers for the theatre to regional and local authorities. The epilogue on the functioning of theatre examines the common structures of theatre in society as described in the seventeen national chapters, and it proposes areas for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How dull plays are killing theatre and what we can do about it. Had I become disenchanted with the form I had once fallen so madly in love with as a pubescent, pimple-faced suburban homo with braces? Maybe theatre was like an all-consuming high school infatuation that now, ten years later, I saw as the closeted balding guy with a beer gut he’d become. There were of course those rare moments of transcendencethat kept me coming back. But why did they come so few and far between? A lot of plays are dull. And one dull play, it seems, can turn us off theatre for good. Playwright and theatre director Jordan Tannahill takes in the spectrum of English-language drama – from the flashiest of Broadway spectacles to productions mounted in scrappy storefront theatres – to consider where lifeless plays come from and why they persist. Having travelled the globe talking to theatre artists, critics, passionate patrons and the theatrically disillusioned, Tannahill addresses what he considers the culture of ‘risk aversion’ paralyzing the form. Theatre of the Unimpressed is Tannahill’s wry and revelatory personal reckoning with the discipline he’s dedicated his life to, and a roadmap for a vital twenty-first-century theatre – one that apprehends the value of ‘liveness’ in our mediated age and the necessity for artistic risk and its attendant failures. In considering dramaturgy, programming and alternative models for producing, Tannahill aims to turn theatre from an obligation to a destination. ‘[Tannahill is] the poster child of a new generation of (theatre? film? dance?) artists for whom "interdisciplinary" is not a buzzword, but a way of life.’ —J. Kelly Nestruck, Globe and Mail ‘Jordan is one of the most talented and exciting playwrights in the country, and he will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.’ —Nicolas Billon, Governor General's Award–winning playwright (Fault Lines)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatre Institutions in Crisis examines how theatre in Europe is beset by a crisis on an institutional level and the pressing need for robust research into the complex configuration of factors at work that are leading to significant shifts in the way theatre is understood, organised, delivered, and received. Balme and Fisher bring together scholars from different disciplines and countries across Europe to examine what factors can be said to be most common to the institutional crisis of European theatre today. The methods employed are drawn from systems theory, social-scientific approaches, economics and statistics, theatre and performance, and other interpretative approaches (hermeneutics), and labour studies. This book will be of great interest to researchers, students, and practitioners working in the fields of performance and theatre studies. It will be particularly relevant to researchers with a particular interest in European theatre and its networks.
