Book excerpt: Mysterious angels who appear when you need them most, a dream that helped save a life, a voice from beyond the grave-these are just a few of the "coincidences" in the stories you are about to read. For some people, these are signs from a relative who has passed, connections to the "real world," showing that we are always loved. Joyce Kocinski has compiled a collection of stories that encourage you to notice the miracles around you that happen every day. The authors share their sometimes heartbreaking testimonies to inspire us and strengthen our faith. You may think of what path you are on in your life and how there are guiding hands to lead you along the way. You will be comforted and inspired by these stories including: -- A young mother who vows to trust God, quits her full-time job to stay home with her children and begins finding money in all kinds of unlikely places. -- A court-appointed children's advocate, inspired by a tragedy in her own life, who diagnoses a grave medical condition in a child and saves his life. -- A deaf woman awakened by an apparition of her mother who saves her baby's life. -- An ICU nurse contemplating suicide finds redemption through one of her patients. -- A woman rescued during a roll over car accident by an unseen angel.

Book excerpt: Thirty years ago, on the date in June known as Midsummer’s Day, a young girl is mysteriously orphaned. Now, after a life of bizarre and troubling circumstances, she becomes obsessed with the idea that she too will die on Midsummer’s Day . . . until she meets the one man who may be able to save her Azalea Lewis’s life has been dominated by coincidences—a bizarre, and increasingly troubling, series of chance events so perfectly coordinated that any sane person would conclude that only the hidden hand of providence could explain them. On Midsummer’s Day, 1982, at the age of three, Azalea was found wandering a fairground in England, alone, too young to explain what had happened to her or her parents. After a brief investigation, she was declared a ward of the court, and placed in foster care. The following year, the body of a woman—her mother—was found on a nearby beach, but by then everyone had forgotten about the little girl, and no connection was ever made. The couple who adopted Azalea brought her to Africa, where—on Midsummer’s Day, 1992—they were killed in a Ugandan uprising while trying to protect their children. Azalea is spared on that day, but as she grows into adulthood, she discovers that her life has been shaped by an uncanny set of coincidences—all of them leading back to her birth mother, a single mother on the Isle of Man, and the three men who could have been her father, each of whom has played an improbable but very real role in her fate. Troubled by what she has uncovered-and increasingly convinced that she, too, will meet her fate on Midsummer’s Day—she approaches Thomas Post, a rational-minded academic whose specialty is debunking our belief in coincidence: the belief that certain events are linked, even predestined, by the hands of fate. Even as they fall in love, Thomas tries to help to understand her past as a series of random events-not a divinely predetermined order. Yet as the fateful date draws closer, Thomas begins to fear that he may lose her altogether, and she may throw herself into the very fate she fears. A warm and romantic, yet intellectually fascinating, story of two souls trying to make sense of the universe and our place in it, Just Coincidence is an unforgettable novel by a storyteller of masterful gifts.

Book excerpt: A mathematical guide to understanding why life can seem to be one big coincidence-and why the odds of just about everything are better than we would think. What are the chances? This is the question we ask ourselves when we encounter the strangest and most seemingly impossible coincidences, like the woman who won the lottery four times or the fact that Lincoln's dreams foreshadowed his own assassination. But, when we look at coincidences mathematically, the odds are a lot better than any of us would have thought. In Fluke, mathematician Joseph Mazur takes a second look at the seemingly improbable, sharing with us an entertaining guide to the most surprising moments in our lives. He takes us on a tour of the mathematical concepts of probability, such as the law of large numbers and the birthday paradox, and combines these concepts with lively anecdotes of flukes from around the world. How do you explain finding your college copy of Moby Dick in a used bookstore on the Seine on your first visit to Paris? How can a jury be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that DNA found at the scene of a heinous crime did not get there by some fluke? Should we be surprised if strangers named Maria and Francisco, seeking each other in a hotel lobby, accidentally meet the wrong Francisco and the wrong Maria, another pair of strangers also looking for each other? As Mazur reveals, if there is any likelihood that something could happen, no matter how small, it is bound to happen to someone at some time. In Fluke, Mazur offers us proof of the inevitability of the sublime and the unexpected. He has written a book that will appeal to anyone who has ever wondered how all of the tiny decisions that happen in our lives add up to improbable wholes. A must-read for math enthusiasts and storytellers alike, Fluke helps us to understand the true nature of chance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More Than a Coincidence in Our Midst is a collection of stories that, no matter what you believe, you will find some of them astounding, thought-provoking, inspiring, entertaining, and some of them comforting. Although a few of them are mine, most of them are from people I have known or met along the way. They are all true. I have communicated with each person individually. When I began collecting these stories, they just sprung up everywhere like the daylilies in the spring in Atlanta--with little effort. When people would tell me that they could hardly wait to read my book, I would respond that I felt the same way because I never knew what story would be told to me next. As you are about to read these stories, perhaps you will stop and ask yourself questions. Some people believe in the randomness of events, in coincidences, and others believe there are no such thing as coincidences. There are so many things I cannot explain or understand; however, there are a few things I absolutely know. I know that God has a plan for each of us, and He has given all of us free will. I see evidences of God's fingerprints all around us and like to think of them as God's divine assurances that we are not alone on our journey no matter what is happening. It is my prayer that no matter what you believe or wonder about, you can seek the truth and the truth will set you free. To seek the truth is quite simple--just ask to be shown. You don't have to believe in anything. Just say, "God, I don't even know if You exist, but if You do, please reveal Yourself to me." Finding the truth is just that simple. After all, just remember whether or not you believe in gravity or deny its existence, it does exist. I am stepping out in faith as I share the magic power of the words and experiences of myself and others as I fulfil my long-standing dream to share this collection with you. I have included one amazing event that occurred on my very last day before I retired from my thirteen-year banking career just two minutes before we closed the door. You may read about it in my introduction. I hope you will be as astounded as I was. My prayer is that all these stories may open your eyes to see your world in a different way! May each of you reading this book and everyone who contributed as well be blessed without measure!

Book excerpt: Although much has been said and written about coincidences, there is a marked absence when it comes to the development of a comprehensive model that incorporates the many different ways in which they can be understood and explained. One reason for this omission is undoubtedly the sharp divide that exists between those who find coincidences meaningful and those who do not, with the result that the conclusions of the many books and articles on the subject have tended to fall into distinct camps. The Many Faces of Coincidence attempts to remedy this impasse by proposing an inclusive categorisation for coincidences of all shapes and sizes. At the same time, some of the implications arising from the various explanations are explored, including the possibility of an underlying unity of mind and matter constituting the ground of being.

Book excerpt: Synchronicity: the uncanny and fortuitous timing of events that seems to go beyond pure chance. Synchronicity can act as a guide along our life path, helping us through challenging times and nudging us toward self-fulfillment.Psychologist Chris Mackey offers astounding case studies, alongside a lucid explanation of the brain science underlying synchronicity and many practical suggestions for working with it, from journaling and symbol analysis to dream interpretation and ideas for accessing flow. He is convinced that synchronicity has a crucial role to play in helping us “go within” and tap intoour intuitive and spiritual selves. This book is also a passionate call for a new, more optimistic “positive psychiatry” that embraces our transcendent experiences. A 21st-century take on Jung’s legacy, this exciting new approach to synchronicity will appeal to anyone interested in the opportunities for personal development offered by altered states of consciousness. “A profound introduction to deep concepts of mind, meaning and the challenges of creating a life well lived for everyone.” --Ernest Rossi, Ph.D., author of The Psychobiology of Gene Expression and Creating Consciousness

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We've all experienced or heard of surprising events and unexplainable coincidences—money that seems to come from nowhere, a spontaneous idea that turns into a life-changing solution, meeting our soulmate on a flight we weren't supposed to take, or families being reunited by "accident" after years of separation. Often these coincidences are explained as being controlled by a higher power or pure chance. But for the first time since Carl Jung's work, comes bold new research that explains scientifically how we can identify, understand, and perhaps even control the frequency of coincidences in our everyday lives. Bernard Beitman, a leading expert on Coincidence Studies, proposes a greater personal responsibility which depends partly upon newly discovered "grid cells" located in the brain, near the hippocampus. But neuroscience cannot complete the entire puzzle, and in this fascinating guide, Beitman provides the missing piece. From analyzing true stories of synchronicity from around the globe and throughout history, he shares key personality characteristics and situational factors that contribute to the occurrence of meaningful coincidences in our lives. Where other books on coincidences tend to be theoretical, inspirational, or story collections only, Beitman's book is the first to provide a scientific understanding and practical ways in which readers can use them in their own lives. He reveals: How to activate your observing self so you don't miss synchronistic moments How serendipity can offer insights into solving problems or making difficult decisions Why stress activates meaningful coincidences Which states of mind impede our ability to experience synchronicity How to interpret the meaning of a coincidence Why being attuned to coincidences is a learned skill—and how to hone your sensitivity.

Book excerpt: 'Raising your consciousness to the 'God Winks' that often go by unnoticed, and recognising them as tremendously personal, will affirm that your existence is not random and that you have a role to play in life's grand plan' Squire Rushnell Have you ever thought about someone who hasn't crossed your path or mind in years and then bumped into them? Are there such things as coincidences? Do they mean anything? According to Rushnell, 'coincidences, like winks from God, are encouraging signposts along your universal path.' In WHEN GOD WINKS he explains that a 'God Wink' is a message of reassurance that comes our way whenever we need it and that coincidences are the best way for God to establish a presence in our lives. Rushnell shows how to retrace crossroads (a new job, a death, change in relationships) that took us in an entirely different direction, showing how to map the turning points made by coincidences that have guided us throughout our lives. Best of all, WHEN GOD WINKS shows us how to create our own coincidences and turn wishes into winks. He explains his compelling theory of coincidences through a series of incredible stories and motivational writing on how coincidences play a role in all facets of our life, including career, love, history, medicine, entertainment, sports and politics with telling comments from Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Streisand, Mark Twain, Kevin Costner and other celebrities. WHEN GOD WINKS is a fascinating bridge to self-discovery.

Book excerpt: Ever wonder what the odds are of being struck by lightning? Or winning the lottery? Or meeting someone from Timbuktu with the same middle name as you? BEYOND COINCIDENCE recounts and analyzes over 200 amazing stories of synchronicity, the likes of: Laura Buxton, age ten, releases a balloon from her back yard. It lands 140 miles away in the backyard of another Laura Buxton, also age ten. Two sisters in Alabama decide, independently, to visit the other. En route, their identical jeeps collide and both sisters are killed. A British cavalry officer was fighting in the last year of World War One when he was knocked off his horse by a flash of lightning. He was paralyzed from the waist down. The man moved to Vancouver, Canada where, six years later, while fishing in a river, lightning struck him again, paralyzing his right side. Two years later, he was sufficiently recovered to take walks in a local park when, in 1930, lightning sought him out again, this time permanently paralyzing him. He died soon after. Four years later, lightning destroyed his tomb.

This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Improbability Principle, the renowned statistician David J. Hand argues that extraordinarily rare events are anything but. In fact, they're commonplace. Not only that, we should all expect to experience a miracle roughly once every month. But Hand is no believer in superstitions, prophecies, or the paranormal. His definition of "miracle" is thoroughly rational. No mystical or supernatural explanation is necessary to understand why someone is lucky enough to win the lottery twice, or is destined to be hit by lightning three times and still survive. All we need, Hand argues, is a firm grounding in a powerful set of laws: the laws of inevitability, of truly large numbers, of selection, of the probability lever, and of near enough. Together, these constitute Hand's groundbreaking Improbability Principle. And together, they explain why we should not be so surprised to bump into a friend in a foreign country, or to come across the same unfamiliar word four times in one day. Hand wrestles with seemingly less explicable questions as well: what the Bible and Shakespeare have in common, why financial crashes are par for the course, and why lightning does strike the same place (and the same person) twice. Along the way, he teaches us how to use the Improbability Principle in our own lives—including how to cash in at a casino and how to recognize when a medicine is truly effective. An irresistible adventure into the laws behind "chance" moments and a trusty guide for understanding the world and universe we live in, The Improbability Principle will transform how you think about serendipity and luck, whether it's in the world of business and finance or you're merely sitting in your backyard, tossing a ball into the air and wondering where it will land.
