Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study re-examines the dynamics of race relations in the post–Civil War South from an altogether fresh perspective: field sports. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wealthy white men from Southern cities and the industrial North traveled to the hunting and fishing lodges of the old Confederacy—escaping from the office to socialize among like-minded peers. These sportsmen depended on local black guides who knew the land and fishing holes and could ensure a successful outing. For whites, the ability to hunt and fish freely and employ black laborers became a conspicuous display of their wealth and social standing. But hunting and fishing had been a way of life for all Southerners—blacks included—since colonial times. After the war, African Americans used their mastery of these sports to enter into market activities normally denied people of color, thereby becoming more economically independent from their white employers. Whites came to view black participation in hunting and fishing as a serious threat to the South’s labor system. Scott E. Giltner shows how African-American freedom developed in this racially tense environment—how blacks' sense of competence and authority flourished in a Jim Crow setting. Giltner’s thorough research using slave narratives, sportsmen’s recollections, records of fish and game clubs, and sporting periodicals offers a unique perspective on the African-American struggle for independence from the end of the Civil War to the 1920s.

Book excerpt: For most of the millions of Americans who go afield in pursuit of game in the 1990s, a hunt is about so much more than the act of hunting. It’s also about connecting to the land, bonding with your hunting companions, and respecting the spirit of the chase. The core of the hunt, the very reasons that people go afield, is the same today as it was in 1900. Tradition. And tradition is what this book is about. A striking collection of stories and artwork, this is a celebration of our hunting heritage that’s sure to evoke your own special hunting memories. "100 Years of Hunting" includes compelling stories about hunting game from the ever-popular whitetail to mule deer, elk, grizzly bear, bighorn sheep, grouse, ducks, pheasant, and more from the past 100 years. These engaging narratives are from such legends as Grover Cleveland, Zane Grey, Archibald Rutledge, Gordon MacQuarrie, Patrick F. McManus, Ernest Hemingway, and Robert Ruark. These hunting tales are paired with great artwork, including outstanding wildlife photography, hunting collectibles, sporting paintings, period ads, and historical images.

Thompson's ether-fuelled, savage journey to the heart of the American Dream: We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold... And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas.

Book excerpt: By 2007, after the nuclear war with the Soviet Union, Japanese mega-corporations run America. In this dark never-future of hovercars, 'droids, and Mars colonies, the oppressive corporations rule the overworked occupants of the mega-cities with an iron fist. And a mysterious disease called IDES is causing people to lose their implanted synthetic memories. John Bishop makes his living on the fringes of the mega-corporate society that disgraced him and reduced him to a repo man of brain implants--a memory hunter. Bishop, with the help of beautiful dissident scientist Dr. Amy Alexander, unravels a conspiracy of corruption and horror, and in so doing he just may find the redemption that has eluded him from the bottom of a synth-alcohol bottle. Mixing elements of classic science fiction, Chandleresque noir, and absurdist dark humor, the author of laugh-out-loud cult classics The Earworm Inception and Rumored to Exist creates a retro future world of classic cyberpunk. The clever twist of wry humor and science fiction predictions from the 1980s gone wrong offers a satirical look at a future that never happened.

Book excerpt: The spellbinding account of the most complex and captivating manhunt in American history. "A true-crime masterpiece." -- Booklist (starred review) On April 3, 1996, a team of FBI agents closed in on an isolated cabin in remote Montana, marking the end of the longest and most expensive investigation in FBI history. The cabin's lone inhabitant was a former mathematics prodigy and professor who had abandoned society decades earlier. Few people knew his name, Theodore Kaczynski, but everyone knew the mayhem and death associated with his nickname: the Unabomber. For two decades, Kaczynski had masterminded a campaign of random terror, killing and maiming innocent people through bombs sent in untraceable packages. The FBI task force charged with finding the perpetrator of these horrifying crimes grew to 150 people, yet his identity remained a maddening mystery. Then, in 1995, a "manifesto" from the Unabomber was published in the New York Times and Washington Post, resulting in a cascade of tips--including the one that cracked the case. Hunting the Unabomber includes: Exclusive interviews with key law enforcement agents who attempted to track down Kaczynski, correcting the history distorted by earlier films and streaming series Never-before-told stories of inter-agency law enforcement conflicts that changed the course of the investigation An in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at why the hunt for the Unabomber was almost shut down by the FBI New York Times bestselling author and former federal prosecutor Lis Wiehl meticulously reconstructs the white-knuckle, tension-filled hunt to identify and capture the mysterious killer. This is a can’t-miss, true crime thriller of the years-long battle of wits between the FBI and the brilliant-but-criminally insane Ted Kaczynski. "A powerful dual narrative of the unfolding investigation and the life story of Ted Kaczynski...The action progresses with drama and nail-biting intensity, the conclusion foregone yet nonetheless compelling. A true-crime masterpiece." -- Booklist (starred review)

Book excerpt: We hunt for many reasons. Maybe the most cherished thing we get from hunting are the memories. Under Orion is a collection of one hunter's memories made while hunting from the hills of Appalachia where he was born, to the green hills of Africa. All are told in Richard Mann's simple campfire fashion. Maybe Adam Heggenstaller, the Executive Editor of the National Rifle Association's American Hunter magazine explained this book best when he commented, "Under Orion confirms the most treasured things we bring home from the field are measured not in pounds or inches, but instead by moments forever lodged in our memories. Here are one man's trophies from a lifetime of hunting, richly recounted in stories that stir you to reflect on your own experiences outdoors and encourage you to gather more." Under Orion makes for great bed time reading. You'll put it down, close your eyes, and your own hunting memories will take over.
