Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image that comes to mind when you think of big game hunters is of African safaris with men carrying enormous guns hunting exotic game. But there were women on those trips as well, and not just the trips to Africa, and they were often as successful at the hunt as the men. Women such as Lady Florence Dixie, Agnes Herbert, Osa Johnson, Grace Gallatin Seton, and Gladys Harriman hunted so well, they made names for themselves and wrote of their adventures. Divided into chapters detailing a specific time period, region hunted or individual woman, With Rifle and Petticoat explores the interesting women who hunted a variety of big game animals around the world.

Book Synopsis Best Left as Indians by : Ken Coates
Download or read book Best Left as Indians written by Ken Coates and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1991-10-30 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The indigenous population, Coates stresses, has not been passive in the face of expansion by whites. He argues that Native people have played a major role in shaping the history of the region and determining the relationship with the immigrant population. They recognized the conflict between the material and technological advantages of an imposed economic order and the desire to maintain a harvesting existence. While they readily accepted technological innovations, they resisted the imposition of an industrial, urban environment. Contemporary land claims show their long-standing attachment to the land and demonstrate a continued, assertive response to non-Native intervention.

Book Synopsis Space Use and Movements of Moose Hunters and Wolves in the Yukon Flats, Alaska by : Ian August Johnson
Download or read book Space Use and Movements of Moose Hunters and Wolves in the Yukon Flats, Alaska written by Ian August Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the Yukon Flats, Alaska, subsistence communities utilize moose (Alces alces) as a primary resource (78% of households) and wolves (Canis lupus) hunt them as an obligatory prey item. Hence, understanding the potential of direct or indirect competition between wolves and humans is useful for managers. In Chapter 1, I used a novel approach utilizing spatially-linked interviews to quantify the distance subsistence users were traveling from communities and rivers to harvest moose in the Yukon Flats. My study was the first to quantify hunter access in the Arctic and may provide managers with a harvest estimation approach that may supplement the current harvest ticket system, for which reporting is considered consistently low. My final results and model may be used by game managers outside of the Yukon Flats where hunter success is linked to access to forecast the impact of creating new access on game populations or forecast the effect of access closure on game populations. In Chapter 2, I quantified wolf movement and evaluated resource selection by wolves within a low prey-density system. I used Global Positioning System (GPS) collars to characterize wolf movement. My results were the first in the literature to examine wolf movements in a low prey-density system and demonstrate that wolves travel farther to make kills. My results provided a mechanism for explaining large wolf territories, which are documented in low prey-density systems, and in our system. Within high prey-density systems, managers could expect wolf travel distances to increase if prey density decreases, resulting in larger territories within their respective systems. My results also demonstrate that similar to high prey-density systems, wolves were utilizing river corridors. By understanding that hunter access for moose and wolf travel paths both occur along rivers, we postulate possible competition along navigable waters. I used the results of my spatial analysis in Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 to evaluate the likelihood of competition between hunters and wolves. I found that in a pack overlapping navigable water, 75% of its use points fall within hunter use areas. However, my spatial data of wolf and human use did not overlap temporally. I suggest that evaluating competition would require comprehensive biological and social datasets which encapsulate moose, wolf, and human behavior. It is critical that these dataset overlap spatially and temporally.

Book Synopsis Management of an Expanding Moose (Alces Alces) Population on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska by : Eric J. Wald
Download or read book Management of an Expanding Moose (Alces Alces) Population on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska written by Eric J. Wald and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My overall objective of this project was to identify and develop management tools for an expanding moose population in western Alaska. The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) is home to over 40 villages that rely on subsistence resources across the region, and the high demand for resources has prioritized moose management on the Delta. It is critical for wildlife managers to understand not only wildlife ecology, but also the social component to resource management, which often times is the most important factor for success. I investigate a historical perspective of moose and moose management on the YKD. The historical colonization of moose into Alaska and subsequently into the Yukon-Kuskokwim region is described. I document a case study of the dual-management process for wildlife management in Alaska between the state and federal agencies and how this process worked for moose in the region. Additionally, the success of co-management is documented where the local residents of the region worked with agencies to make resource management decisions such as enacting a short-term moose hunting moratorium that benefited them in the long-term. I investigated management tools to help better understand the expanding moose population. There was a need to develop an alternative population survey technique for parts of the region that do not receive adequate or reliable survey conditions for the standard method used in the area. I developed a helicopter-based distance sampling technique that can be used in narrow riparian corridors during low snow years. Additionally, I developed a method for characterizing and indexing moose browse species within the region. Moose expanding into previously unoccupied habitats could have lasting effects on forage if populations become excessive in localized areas. It is important to characterize the condition of the browse base before the moose population expands and increases in density in order to have a baseline for future comparisons. This project also investigates the effects that snowshoe hares and beavers have on moose browse in the study area. Lastly, I relate a brooming index based on plant architecture to moose twinning rates, a measure of population productivity.
