Book excerpt: A 2018 AESA Critic's Choice Award Winner A 2019 SPE Outstanding Book Award Winner Teacher moonlighting has been studied and documented since at least the early 1960s, and yet, it can be easily argued that the phenomenon is still not understood. Teachers moonlight in higher numbers than other professions, and while most teachers claim that they do it for the money, increases in their compensation have not reduced the practice. By the Light of the Silvery Moon is the first book to provide a thorough review of the research on the topic, looking deeply into the intricate workings of a profession that is at least imperiled or, in the best of scenarios, a profession that is in transition. Teachers play a critical role in society, so teaching needs to be a sustainable profession where teachers may still moonlight, but the opportunities to expand the status as well as the content and context of their work are unlimited. This book fills an important gap in the literature by bringing together the research and situating it within a broader conversation about teachers’ work. Perfect for courses such as: All undergraduate and graduate Foundations of Education courses, Introduction to Education, History and Philosophy of Education, and Teacher Leadership.

Book excerpt: The elementary and secondary education data collection system has undergone a major transformation over the past decade, becoming a coordinated, cohesive system. This report reviews what the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) can and cannot say about education in the United States for kindergarten through grade 12. Six issue areas have been defined by the Indicators Panel convened by the NCES. In the first part of this document, six types of data are juxtaposed against the following six issue areas: (1) institutions and their characteristics; (2) finance; (3) staffing; (4) curriculum and course content; (5) students; and (6) achievement. The second part of this report is then organized into sections that provide information on continuing data collections, new initiatives, and remaining gaps for each of these broad types of education data. Each section contains a description of the availability of the data specific to its subject, a bibliography of current and planned NCES publications on the topic, and a summary chart of the availability of data. The NCES remains committed to providing timely and policy-relevant data. The data collection system maintains its relevance by remaining flexible and responsive to new policy needs. An appendix provides a short profile of each national survey that collects data on education in kindergarten through grade 12. (SLD)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first essay of this dissertation examines the role of teacher characteristics in schools on student outcomes using datasets from TIMSS 1999 and TIMSS 2007 international tests. Taking an advantage that students have to take both mathematics and science subjects from different teachers, I use the method of First Difference (FD) analysis in order to remove the potential biases between teacher attributes and unobserved student characteristics. The findings show some contradictory outcomes between the FD analysis and ordinary least squares (OLS) analysis. The second essay looks into the problem of recruitment of well-qualified high school and college graduates to work as primary and secondary school teachers. I compare teacher salaries and benefits vis-Ă -vis other mathematics and science-oriented professions namely medical professions, engineers, accountants, scientists and nurses. In addition, I compare incomes between people who graduate from teacher colleges and non-teacher colleges. Using data from Thailand Labor Force Survey from 1985 to 2005, I find that teachers are the most poorly paid of all professions, including nurses. The difference in terms of an opportunity cost between male and female teachers is also striking. Among the graduates from teacher colleges, male graduates earn more than their peers if they chose other occupations whereas female graduates earn less if they make other choices. The third essay looks at the reasons teachers choose part-time jobs, the type of jobs they choose, and the amount of income they receive from these jobs, as well as factors influencing these decisions. I find that approximately 20-25% of Thai teachers participated in moonlighting activities. The majority of them have part-time jobs including tutoring, selling food and other products, and farming. Low salaries and high level of indebtedness are the most important factors associated with the increased likelihood of having a part-time job. However, economic status does not correlate significantly with their decision to tutor as their part-time job.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report explores the effects of teacher professionalization on elementary and secondary teachers in the United States. The analysis examines the relationships between a set of characteristics traditionally associated with professions and professionals and teachers' commitment to their teaching careers. The report focuses on the following professional characteristics: (1) credentials--use of professional criteria for hiring teaching job candidates; (2) induction--provision of mentoring programs for beginning teachers and the effectiveness of assistance provided to new teachers; (3) professional development--extent of participation in activities sponsored by professional teaching organizations, and financial support; (4) authority--faculty influence over school policymaking and the degree of teachers' individual autonomy within their classrooms; and (5) compensation--the highest salary levels offered by schools. The data source was the 1990-91 Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS). Data analysis revealed that four characteristics in particular were associated with commitment: teacher classroom autonomy, faculty policymaking influence, effectiveness of assistance for new teachers, and teachers' maximum end-of-career salaries. In contrast, several traditional indicators of teacher professionalization were not associated with higher teacher commitment: use of professional criteria for hiring teaching job candidates, financial support for teachers' continuing education, and participation in activities sponsored by professional teaching organizations. The appendix lists additional resources on SASS. (Contains approximately 50 references.) (ND)
