Book excerpt: A night in London, a murder case to crack--a wolf begging for fish and chips? As our investigation progresses we follow our noses in the hopes of uncovering urban wolves who may wish us harm. When we turn up undead my own curiosity draws me to my first exploration of a silent hive--a vampire's lair below city streets. No wonder they say curiosity killed the witch. At first we had too few suspects. Now we have too many. Are we really trailing serial killers, or only on a wild wolf chase as we question cursed undead, pursue rogue shifters, and pick the pockets of London tourists? Wait, what? Andrew! The trail seems to be growing cold when a trip to the Continent offers answers, and a chance to explore France and Germany by motorcycle with a wolf pack. While I should be investing my time and energy in a date with destiny to solve a crime, I find myself invested in dates of another kind. The sorts ending with moonlit kisses and more... This is Book 2 in The Witch and the Wolf Pack series.

Download or read book Moon written by Bernd Brunner and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using werewolves and Wernher von Braun, Stonehenge and the sex lives of sea corals, aboriginal myths, and an Anglican bishop in this new book, the author weaves variegated information into a glimpse of Earth's closest celestial neighbor, whose mere presence inspires us to wonder what might be out there. Going beyond the discoveries of contemporary science, he presents a cultural assessment of our complex relationship with Earth's lifeless, rocky satellite. As well as offering an engaging perspective on such age old questions as "What would Earth be like without the moon?" he surveys the moon's mythical and religious significance and provokes existential soul searching through a lunar lens, inquiring, "Forty years ago, the first man put his footprint on the moon. Will we continue to use it as the screen onto which we cast our hopes and fears?" Drawing on materials from different cultures and epochs, he walks readers down a moonlit path illuminated by more than seventy-five vintage photographs and illustrations. From scientific discussions of the moon's origins and its chronobiological effects on the mating and feeding habits of animals to an illuminating interpretation of Bishop Francis Godwin's 1638 novel The Man in the Moone, his interdisciplinary explorations recast a familiar object in an original light.

Download or read book Blood Relations written by Chris Knight and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of symbolic culture is generally linked with the development of the hunger-gatherer adaptation based on a sexual division of labor. This original and ingenious book presents a new theory of how this symbolic domain originated. Integrating perspectives of evolutionary biography and social anthropology within a Marxist framework, Chris Knight rejects the common assumption that human culture was a modified extension of primate behavior and argues instead that it was the product of an immense social, sexual, and political revolution initiated by women. Culture became established, says Knight, when evolving human females began to assert collective control over their own sexuality, refusing sex to all males except those who came to them with provisions. Women usually timed their ban on sexual relations with their periods of infertility while they were menstruating, and to the extent that their solidarity drew women together, these periods tended to occur in synchrony. The result was that every month with the onset of menstruation, sexual relations were ruptured in a collective, ritualistic way as the prelude to each successful hunting expedition. This ritual act was the means through which women motivated men not only to hunt but also to concentrate energies on bringing back the meat. Knight shows how this hypothesis sheds light on the roots of such cultural traditions as totemic rituals, incest and menstrual taboos, blood-sacrifice, and hunters’ atonement rites. Providing detailed ethnographic documentation, he also explains how Native American, Australian Aboriginal, and other magico-religious myths can be read as derivatives of the same symbolic logic.
