Book Synopsis Building Harlequin's Moon by : Larry Niven
Download or read book Building Harlequin's Moon written by Larry Niven and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first interstellar starship, John Glenn, fled a Solar System populated by rogue AIs and machine/human hybrids, threatened by too much nanotechnology, and rife with political dangers. The John Glenn's crew intended to terraform the nearly pristine planet Ymir, in hopes of creating a utopian society that would limit intelligent technology. But by some miscalculation they have landed in another solar system and must shape the gas giant planet Harlequin's moon, Selene, into a new, temporary home. Their only hope of ever reaching Ymir is to rebuild their store of antimatter by terraforming the moon. Gabriel, the head terraformer, must lead this nearly impossible task, with all the wrong materials: the wrong ships and tools, and too few resources. His primary tools are the uneducated and nearly-illiterate children of the original colonists, born and bred to build Harlequin's moon into an antimatter factory. Rachel Vanowen is one of these children. Basically a slave girl, she must do whatever the terraforming Council tells her. She knows that Council monitors her actions from a circling vessel above Selene's atmosphere, and is responsible for everything Rachel and her people know, as well as all the skills, food, and knowledge they have ever received. With no concept of the future and a life defined with duty, how will the children of Selene ever survive once the Council is through terraforming and have abandoned Selene for its ultimate goal of Ymir? Book Synopsis The Metal Moon by : Everett C. Smith
Download or read book The Metal Moon written by Everett C. Smith and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We know that as soon as interplanetary travel is possible, expeditions from the Earth will be ranging the length and breadth of the solar system searching out the thousands of wonders that are to be discovered. It is quite possible that some of the explorers, whether through accident or desire, may colonize the other planets and develop under new and unusual conditions a new branch of the human race. It is doubtlessly true that if each of the solar planets were to be colonized, at the end of several hundred centuries there would be nine races of human beings who might differ radically from each other and in fact might not recognize each other as members of the same human stock.

Book excerpt: In Alta Donna, the weather is great, the sunsets are super, and the stars twinkle brightly. Perfect, right? No! It’s super boring. Nothing real ever happens. Everybody says I spend too much time daydreaming in my own little world. At least my dreams are more interesting than Alta Donna. But what if Alta Donna is hiding a secret? The two new kids in town are up to something. No one could be as good a baseball player as Damiano, and no one could be as charming as Inés. The moment they arrived, life in Alta Donna stopped being perfect and started getting weird. Who are they really? I always say, if you need a puzzle solved, look for someone with a BIG imagination. And that’s me. Nola.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles thought the Moon would be a new beginning. Now, he knows he'll be lucky just to stay alive. Having escaped both an Earth on the verge of global collapse and their squabbling parents in a "divorce" at Geosynchronous Station, a newly independent Charles "Chigger" Dingillian and his two brothers find themselves alone on the Moon with very few prospects. Worse, they are being hunted by ruthless interplanetary corporations who would stop at nothing to come in possession of a memory bar the boys smuggled on board. Totally unsure of who they can trust—if anyone—the three boys must find a way to make it on their own in unfamiliar territory. Only one thing is certain: The Moon is not a safe place to be.
Download or read book Butterfly Moon written by Anita Endrezze and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anita Endrezze has deep memories. Her father was a Yaqui Indian. Her mother traced her heritage to Slovenia, Germany, Romania, and Italy. And her stories seem to bubble up from this ancestral cauldron. Butterfly Moon is a collection of short stories based on folk tales from around the world. But its stories are set in the contemporary, everyday world. Or are they? Endrezze tells these stories in a distinctive and poetic voice. Fantasy often intrudes into reality. Alternate “realities” and shifting perspectives lead us to question our own perceptions. Endrezze is especially interested in how humans hide feelings or repress thoughts by developing shadow selves. In “Raven’s Moon,” she introduces the shadow concept with a Black Moon, the “unseen reflection of the known.” (Of course the story is about a witch couple who seem very much in love.) The title character in “The Wife Who Lived on Wind” is an ogress who lives in a world somewhat similar to our own, but only somewhat. “The Vampire and the Moth Woman” reveals shape-shifters living among us. Not surprisingly, Trickster appears in these tales. As in Native American stories, Trickster might be a fox or a coyote or a raven or a human—or something in between. “White Butterflies” and “Where the Bones Are” both deal with devastating diseases that swept through Yaqui country in the 1530s. Underneath their surfaces are old Yaqui folktales that feature the greatest Trickster of all: Death (and his little brother Fate). Enjoyably disturbing, these stories linger—deep in our memory.
Download or read book Moon Signs written by Donna Cunningham and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2010-12-08 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you think your astrological fate is sealed by your Sun sign, think again! Your emotions, instincts, intuition, and most private passions are dominated by your Moon sign. In this eye-opening volume, world-famous astrologer and therapist Donna Cunningham unravels the often bewildering effects of lunar influence: a person’s potential for intimacy, sense of security, family ties, susceptibility to indulgence in food or drink, career ambition, as well as how men and women respond differently to the same lunar promptings in love and life. Cunningham provides all the information you need to determine your own and others’ Moon signs—and analyze their power. Moon Signs also charts the daily, monthly, and yearly courses of the moon, which create those predictable mood swings—our “emotional weather.” The time-honored tradition of astrology has come into its own as a resource for human development and spiritual insight. For astrological novices and veterans alike, Cunningham’s invaluable guide will pave the way to a more profound understanding of the uncharted and sometimes dark side of the soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure of the Moon's Surface focuses on the importance of certain features of the Moon's surface that have frequently been disregarded in the past, largely because of lack of knowledge of them. Topics covered include the librations of the Moon; height determinations of the points on the lunar surface; luminous intensity and luminescence of the lunar rocks; the color of moonlight and composition of the Moon's surface; and the Moon's temperature and atmosphere. This book is comprised of 14 chapters and begins with a review of important physical problems associated with the Moon, including its motion and figure as well as the luminous intensity and luminescence of its rocks. The following chapters discuss the polarization of light reflected by the Moon; the problem of the Moon's atmosphere; the probable nature of the Moon's surface; and changes occurring on the Moon. The Moon's ray and grid systems, lattice patterns, rilles and faults, and distribution and frequency of craters are also considered. The final chapter is devoted to the origin of the Moon's surface. This monograph will be of use to both professional and amateur lunar astronomers.
