Se comienza describiendo cada uno de los componentes del hardware, examinando sus características, modelos y prestaciones y, posteriormente, se pasa a especificar cada uno de los pasos necesarios para el montaje de la máquina. Seguidamente se introduce al usuario en el concepto de software y su importancia. El lector aprenderá a elegir, instalar y usar el tipo de software que le sea de mayor utilidad en su ordenador, tanto en el entorno Windows como en el entorno Linux. Además, el tratamiento que se hace del hardware, necesario para la composición del ordenador, es exhaustivo e incluye la placa base, las fuentes de alimentación, las cajas, los buses, las memorias, los procesadores, las unidades de almacenamiento y todo tipo de tarjetas de expansión, cables, conexiones y periféricos. Por su parte, el tratamiento que se hace del software incluye el manejo del registro, las utilidades de mantenimiento de disco, las copias de seguridad, el proceso de clonación, los gestores de arranque y particiones y las herramientas de diagnóstico. Al principio de cada unidad se ofrece una breve introducción y un listado de los objetivos principales; a continuación se desarrollan los contenidos de manera detallada y se intercalan con útiles actividades propuestas y recuadros de información adicional. Para sintetizar y afianzar lo aprendido, se ofrece un útil mapa conceptual al final de la explicación teórica, que permite al alumno repasar y aclarar los conceptos antes de poner a prueba y aplicar sus conocimientos a través de las actividades finales.
