He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: 1782---George Washington “I demand the guilty—Cap Lippicott” “that villain Moody” The American Revolution is America’s first Civil War. “Loyalists’—those in the American colonies loyal to the British Crown and the colonial governments—see the self-styled “Patriots” as traitorous Rebels. Communities, even families, are split into two hostile warring camps. “The Monmouth Manifesto” takes you into this seldom-seen Loyalist world in a novel based on true historical characters and events. Two New Jersey farmers—Richard Lippincott, a modest Quaker, and James Moody, an alpha Anglican—become unlikely friends in a Loyalist regiment in the British Army and see all kinds of action against the Rebels, from pitched battles and guerrilla warfare to highjackings and kidnappings. And there are Reprisals, like extrajudicial hangings of both Loyalists and, fatefully, Patriots. Their daring deeds in New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia draw the wrath of General George Washington, whose famous stoic calm is shattered by his explosive anger, which leads to one of his worst decisions and an international incident—the Asgill Affair—that embarrasses his ally, the King of France himself. Their loved ones suffer too, as Lippincott and Moody come to pay the price for their courage on the wrong side of historyˆ—loss of their farms, broken homes, brutal prison confinements, a murder trial and the prospect of refugeedom.

Book excerpt: He was the illegitimate son of a king, a gallant and brave military hero, charming, handsome and well loved both within the court and with women; James Scott, Duke of Monmouth, had the life many would have envied in the seventeenth century.Monmouth lived in an age that was on the cusp of modernity. He lived through some of the biggest events and scandals of seventeenth century British history, including: the Restoration of his father, King Charles II; The Great Fire of London in 1666 and the last great plague to sweep through London killing thousands.James also experienced the political scandal of the Popish Plot; became embroiled in the foiled Rye House Plot, and was at the centre of the Exclusion Crisis, which was a major catalyst for the modern creation of our party political system. But what would turn the beloved darling of the Restoration court into a leading rebel?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Place yourself in the boots of the Continental Army and the British forces as they march towards a pivotal Revolutionary War battle. June 1778 was a tumultuous month in the annals of American military history. Somehow, General George Washington and the Continental Army were able to survive a string of defeats around Philadelphia in 1777 and a desperate winter at Valley Forge. As winter turned to spring, and spring turned to summer, the army—newly trained by Baron von Steuben and in high spirits thanks to France’s intervention into the conflict—marched out of Valley Forge in pursuit of Henry Clinton’s British Army making its way across New Jersey for New York City. What would happen next was not an easy decision for Washington to make. Should he attack the British column? And if so, how? “People expect something from us and our strength demands it,” Gen. Nathanael Greene pressed his chieftain. Against the advice of many of his subordinates, Washington ordered the army to aggressively pursue the British and not allow the enemy to escape to New York City without a fight. On June 28, 1778, the vanguard of the Continental Army under Maj. Gen. Charles Lee engaged Clinton’s rearguard near the small village of Monmouth Court House. Lee’s over-cautiousness prevailed and the Americans were ordered to hasty retreat. Only the arrival of Washington and the main body of the army saved the Americans from disaster. By the end of the day, they held the field as the British continued their march to Sandy Hook and New York City. In A Handsome Flogging: The Battle of Monmouth, June 28, 1778, historian William Griffith retells the story of what many historians have dubbed the “battle that made the American army,” and takes you along the routes trekked by both armies on their marches toward destiny. Follow in the footsteps of heroes (and a heroine) who, on a hot summer day, met in desperate struggle in the woods and farm fields around Monmouth Court House.

Later, during the American Civil War, it became the first Virginia county wholly in the territory that is now West Virginia. Mrs. Vicki Horton is the compiler of a number of Hampshire County genealogical source record collections, six of which are now available from Clearfield Company (see also items 9734, 9339, 9147, 9336, and 9335). Hampshire County Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists consists of alphabetically arranged lists of all persons who paid a property tax for every year between 1800 and 1814, except for 1808, when no tax was collected. For each taxpayer Mrs. Horton has coded the number of white tithables in the household, the number of horses owned, and the number of slaves, if any. On occasion, persons are identified with supporting information, such as occupation. All the taxpayers are readily identified in the comprehensive index at the back of the volume. Since this volume contains more than 20,000 entries, it is hard to imagine a better census approximation of Hampshire County residents for this time period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Use of Hereford, a local variation of the Roman rite, was one of the diocesan liturgies of medieval England before their abolition and replacement by the Book of Common Prayer in 1549. Unlike the widespread Use of Sarum, the Use of Hereford was confined principally to its diocese, which helped to maintain its individuality until the Reformation. This study seeks to catalogue and evaluate all the known surviving sources of the Use of Hereford, with particular reference to the missals and gradual, which so far have received little attention. In addition to these a variety of other material has been examined, including a number of little-known or unknown important fragments of early Hereford service-books dismembered at the Reformation and now hidden away as binding or other scrap in libraries and record offices.

It reflects the focus, character, and actions of David B. McEwan, for whom this book has been dedicated. The essays have been written by scholars from around the globe, each focusing on an aspect of faithfulness from a Wesleyan perspective, and covering the broad disciplines of Bible, theology, history, and pastoral theology. This book has something for everyone, and ultimately invites the reader into deeper Christian faith and faithfulness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completed in 1136, The History of the Kings of Britain traces the story of the realm from its supposed foundation by Brutus to the coming of the Saxons some two thousand years later. Vividly portraying legendary and semi-legendary figures such as Lear, Cymbeline, Merlin the magician and the most famous of all British heroes, King Arthur, it is as much myth as it is history and its veracity was questioned by other medieval writers. But Geoffrey of Monmouth's powerful evocation of illustrious men and deeds captured the imagination of subsequent generations, and his influence can be traced through the works of Malory, Shakespeare, Dryden and Tennyson.
