Book excerpt: Lawrence Whiting has come to know the Thai monkeys of Phana very well in the seven years he has been running the Phana Monkey Project with his wife, Pensri. One of the things he has enjoyed most is the opportunity to introduce his monkey friends to so many Thai people as well as people from all over the world. He hopes that this book will enable even more people to appreciate these lovely creatures. After the monkeys had got comfortable with me… they would come up and touch my arm and then run away again. The mothers would walk up to me and set their babies down to play, and large males would bring their food and eat right next to me. They had let me into their world and I was forever changed. Chris Love, Phana Monkey Project Volunteer Observing them is interesting to see their behaviour and to see how much alike we are! Book Synopsis MANIPULATIVE MONKEYS by : Susan PERRY
Download or read book MANIPULATIVE MONKEYS written by Susan PERRY and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes us into a Costa Rican forest teeming with simian drama, where since 1990 primatologists Perry and Manson have followed four generations of capuchins. The authors describe behavior as entertaining--and occasionally as alarming--as it is recognizable: competition and cooperation, jockeying for position and status, peaceful years under an alpha male devolving into bloody chaos, and complex traditions passed from one generation to the next. Interspersed with their observations are the authors' colorful tales of the challenges of tropical fieldwork.
Book Synopsis No Monkeys, No Chocolate by : Melissa Stewart
Download or read book No Monkeys, No Chocolate written by Melissa Stewart and published by Charlesbridge Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone loves chocolate, right? But how many people actually know where chocolate comes from? How it’s made? Or that monkeys do their part to help this delicious sweet exist? This delectable dessert comes from cocoa beans, which grow on cocoa trees in tropical rain forests. But those trees couldn’t survive without the help of a menagerie of rain forest critters: a pollen-sucking midge, an aphid-munching anole lizard, brain-eating coffin fly maggots—they all pitch in to help the cocoa tree survive. A secondary layer of text delves deeper into statements such as "Cocoa flowers can’t bloom without cocoa leaves . . . and maggots," explaining the interdependence of the plants and animals in the tropical rain forests. Two wise-cracking bookworms appear on every page, adding humor and further commentary, making this book accessible to readers of different ages and reading levels. Back matter includes information about cocoa farming and rain forest preservation, as well as an author’s note.

Download or read book Touch Monkeys written by Marnie Parsons and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All too often Nonsense is relegated to the nursery. Marnie Parsons argues that, rather than being mere child's play, nonsense is a major force in poetic language. In Touch Monkeys she presents us with an original approach to a much-maligned linguistic pursuit. Parsons distinguishes between nonsense language and Nonsense, the genre. Her major chapters work towards a vision of nonsense language as palimpsestic - as involving the overlaying of several ways of making meaning on a verbal sense system, and the consequent disruption of that system. This reading of nonsense is itself an intersection, bringing together historical and contemporary criticism of literary Nonsense and a wide range of poetic and literary theories. Using Carroll and Lear as examples of Nonsense, Parsons provides a survey of existing Nonsense criticism in English, and then extends and elaborates nonsense in theoretical directions set by Gilles Deleuze and Julia Kristeva, among others, and by the poetics of such writers as Charles Olson, Charles Bernstein, Ron Silliman, Steve McCaffery, Louis Zukofsky, and Daphne Marlatt. Following each chapter is a close reading of work by writers as varied as Rudyard Kipling, Colleen Thibaudeau, Adrienne Rich, and Lyn Hejinian. These readings provide practical applications of nonsense theory and establish the interdependence of theory and practice. Nonsense inhabits and challenges traditional forms simultaneously; in Touch Monkeys Parsons enters into the spirit of the genre.
Book Synopsis The Balanced Brain by : Camilla Nord
Download or read book The Balanced Brain written by Camilla Nord and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2025-01-21 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we can use what we’ve learned about the brain to improve our mental health There are many routes to mental well-being. In this groundbreaking book, neuroscientist Camilla Nord offers a fascinating tour of the scientific developments that are revolutionising the way we think about mental health, showing why and how events—and treatments—can affect people in such different ways. In The Balanced Brain, Nord explains how our brain constructs our sense of mental health—actively striving to maintain balance in response to our changing circumstances. While a mentally healthy brain deals well with life’s turbulence, poor mental health results when the brain struggles with disruption. But just what is the brain trying to balance? Nord describes the foundations of mental health in the brain—from the neurobiology of pleasure, pain and desire to the role of mood-mediating chemicals like dopamine, serotonin and opioids. She then pivots to interventions, revealing how antidepressants, placebos and even recreational drugs work; how psychotherapy changes brain chemistry; and how the brain and body interact to make us feel physically (as well as mentally) healthy. Along the way, Nord explains how the seemingly small things we use to lift our moods—a piece of chocolate, a walk, a chat with a friend—work on the same pathways in our brains as the latest treatments for mental health disorders. Understanding the cause of poor mental health is one of the crucial questions of our time. But the answer is unique to each of us, and it requires finding what helps our brains rebalance and thrive. With so many factors at play, there are more possibilities for recovery and resilience than we might think.
Book Synopsis Apes, Monkeys, Children, and the Growth of Mind by : Juan Carlos Gómez
Download or read book Apes, Monkeys, Children, and the Growth of Mind written by Juan Carlos Gómez and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can the study of young monkeys and apes tell us about the minds of young humans? In this fascinating introduction to the study of primate minds, Juan Carlos Gomez identifies evolutionary resemblances--and differences--between human children and other primates. He argues that primate minds are best understood not as fixed collections of specialized cognitive capacities, but more dynamically, as a range of abilities that can surpass their original adaptations. In a lively overview of a distinguished body of cognitive developmental research among nonhuman primates, Gomez looks at knowledge of the physical world, causal reasoning (including the chimpanzee-like errors that human children make), and the contentious subjects of ape language, theory of mind, and imitation. Attempts to teach language to chimpanzees, as well as studies of the quality of some primate vocal communication in the wild, make a powerful case that primates have a natural capacity for relatively sophisticated communication, and considerable power to learn when humans teach them. Gomez concludes that for all cognitive psychology's interest in perception, information-processing, and reasoning, some essential functions of mental life are based on ideas that cannot be explicitly articulated. Nonhuman and human primates alike rely on implicit knowledge. Studying nonhuman primates helps us to understand this perplexing aspect of all primate minds.
Download or read book The Monkey Link written by Andrei Bitov and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 1999-12 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the waning years of the Empire, a poet traverses Russia, from the Baltics to the capital, to the shores of the Black Sea. Along the way, he discusses man's place in the scheme of things with, among others, a very sober scientist and a very drunken landscape painter. He is harassed by the authorities, spends time on a movie set, and is an eyewitness to the August 1991 coup. Full of talk, philosophical speculation and dark humor, this sweeping, intricately structured novel challenges the form even as it presents a highly original view of the world and the former Soviet Union.
