Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental Neuroimplants provides a new take on personality development through brain research - a book for the general reader and practitioner alike. It shows how mental health is influenced by basic neuroscientific rules, and how these can be stabilised and strengthened using a new approach: Mental Neuroimplants. Individual positive emotional worlds can directly impact the brain and - in turn - the psychological health of the person in question. This study shows how this can directly improve quality of life. The authors emphasise that the individual's lifestyle can lead to long-term physical and environmentally induced changes - which can even be effective across generations. The central message of this book is to raise awareness; how using psychological neuroimplants can have a positive impact on numerous areas of life including emotion, health and material prosperity. Hans J. Markowitsch was Professor of Physiological Psychology at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. He studied psychology and biology at the University of Konstanz, had professorships for biopsychology and physiological psychology at the Universities of Konstanz, Bochum, and Bielefeld. He was offered chairs of psychology and neuroscience at both Australian and Canadian Universities. His research centres on the neural and mental bases of memory disorders and on interactions between memory, emotion and consciousness. He is author, co-author or editor of about 30 books and has written around 700 scientific articles. Margit M. Schreier has been working since 1999 as an Independent Management Consultant. She founded the brand NIKU in Germany and the USA. She studied Rightsizing and Upgrading Management at the Georg Simon Ohm Management Institute of the Nuremberg University for Applied Sciences. After many years of personal interest and research in neurosciences, she decided to combine her insights in NIKU. NIKU is a support system for mental autonomy and psychological strength, independent of personal background and opportunities. www.niku-neuro.com

This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Users are increasingly interacting with machine learning (ML)-based curation systems. YouTube and Facebook, two of the most visited websites worldwide, utilize such systems to curate content for billions of users. Contemporary challenges such as fake news, filter bubbles, and biased predictions make the understanding of ML-based curation systems an important and timely concern. Despite their political, social, and cultural importance, practitioners' framing of machine learning and users' understanding of ML-based curation systems have not been investigated systematically. This is problematic since machine learning - as a novel programming paradigm in which a mapping between input and output is inferred from data - poses a variety of open research questions regarding users' understanding. The first part of this thesis provides the first in-depth investigation of ML-based curation systems as socio-technical systems. The second part of the thesis contributes recommendations on how ML-based curation systems can and should be explained and audited. The first part analyses practitioners' framing of ML by examining how the term machine learning, ML applications, and ML algorithms are framed in tutorials. The thesis also investigates the beliefs that users have about YouTube and introduces a user belief framework of ML-based curation systems. Furthermore, it demonstrates how limited users' capabilities for providing input data for ML-based curation systems are. The second part evaluates different explanations of ML-based systems. This evaluation uncovered an explanatory gap between what is available to explain ML-based curation systems and what users need to understand such systems. Informed by this explanatory gap, the second part of this thesis demonstrates that audits of ML systems can be an important alternative to explanations. This demonstration of audits also uncovers a popularity bias enacted by YouTube's ML-based curation system. Based on these findings, the thesis recommends performing audits to ensure that ML-based systems act in the public's interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics and People in Ethology: Personal Reflections on the Study of Animal Behavior is the memoir of a man who has spent his life among animals and academics: observing, studying, playing, and thinking about them. From a childhood in southern California to years spent at Yale, Cambridge and Duke Universities, Peter Klopfer has always made connections between his academic work with animals, his political convictions, and his wide-ranging intellectual interests. Rather than a straightforward history of a discipline that grew up along with his own academic career, Klopfer offers personal and candid insights into ethology (the study of animal behavior). He offers reminiscences about the "fathers" of the field - Konrad Lorenz, Niko Tinbergen, and others.
