Book excerpt: Debut author Mellody Hobson, barrier-breaking pioneer in the world of finance, demystifies money for kids with a look at some wild and weird facts about what makes the world go round. What is the meaning of all those symbols on US bills (and why are they so hard to counterfeit)? What’s with people calling money “bacon” or “cheddar” or “smackeroonies”? With savvy and wit, financial expert Mellody Hobson sheds a friendly light on a daunting subject, from the meteorites that created the first mineral deposits to the ancient Maya who used chocolate as currency to the beginnings of the banking system itself. Readers learn about bartering, profit and loss, the origins of credit, ATMs, and even fun facts about money around the world. In her first children’s book, Mellody Hobson brings excitement to the realm of financial literacy and gives kids the tools they need to navigate money now and in the future. Featuring energetic artwork by debut illustrator Caitlin Stevens, amusing skits starring a cat and bunny who converse in money idioms, and inserts depicting the author and her business partner as kids just learning how money works, Priceless Facts about Money is an inviting, entertaining, and richly educational resource for every child.

Book excerpt: “Money is a terrible master but an excellent servant.” -P.T. Barnum “…Whoever controls the volume of money in any country is absolute master of all industry and commerce.” -President James Garfield “Money never made a man happy yet, nor will it. The more a man has, the more he wants. Instead of filling a vacuum, it makes one.” -Benjamin Franklin The above quotes about money are just a few examples of the many statements made by politicians, businessmen, philosophers, and ordinary people throughout the ages, showing that money has always attracted a lot of attention and controversy. The meaning of money, how it was created, and how it influenced everyday life for Americans inspired Wright Patman throughout his professional life as a Congressman from 1928 to 1975, as chairman of the powerful United States House Committee on Banking and Currency from 1963 to 1975 and a life-long populist in the good sense of the word. He defended the little guy, farmers, veterans and small businessmen against big business, big chain stores, big banks and especially the Federal Reserve system. Together with his Subcommittee on Domestic Finance, Patman released in 1964 A Primer on Money explaining how the US monetary system works and indicated where it needed reform. As a supplement to that report, he released Money Facts--169 Questions and Answers on Money, which is designed to highlight in question and answer form the basic points brought out in A Primer on Money. It answers, for example, what money is: “Money is anything that people will accept in exchange for goods or services, in the belief that they may, in turn, exchange it, now or later, for other goods or services,”, but it also raises many other questions such as: - Who issues currency? - What is a central bank? - What is active monetary policy? - What is the main problem of the Federal Reserve System? Although this publication is over fifty years old, and some changes have been made to the Federal Reserve System since then, this booklet is still relevant and important to understand more about the history and meaning of money and how the Federal Reserve System plays a crucial role in the US economy. This report is interesting reading for students of monetary policy, academics, policymakers, journalists, and anyone interested to learn about the basics of money and the monetary system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 10 In God We Trust Ben Franklin designed the continental dollar coin in 1776 and it bore thirteen stars to represent the thirteen colonies. Being a funny man, he also included the phrase "Time flies, so mind your business" on the coins. It was not until 1865 that "In God, We Trust" was legally allowed to be added to American currency, though earlier forms included the phrase "God and our right". There was actually a lot of discussion around whether to include "In God, We Trust" on the currency and from time to time it fell out of use. But then in 1908, it became mandatory for the phrase to be placed on all coins or notes upon which it had previously been printed (though it was still not required on denominations that had never borne the sentence). And then in 1956, President Eisenhower signed the law making it compulsory to include it on all US money.9 US Dollars Aren't Greenbacks Current US dollars aren't greenbacks. Greenbacks were dollars created and used by Republican president Abraham Lincoln in the 1860s. They were created out of necessity as the union was going to fast run out of money to fight the civil war. So in 1861, congress permitted the printing of 50 million "demand notes" which were printed with green ink on the reverse--thus leading to the coining of their famous name. It soon became apparent that these would also not be enough to fight the war so, reluctantly, President Lincoln began issuing full legal tender US dollars (also printed in green on the reverse side). Despite the fact that these (and a variety of other notes through the course of US financial history) are no longer printed, they all remain legal tender. Though if you find one it may be worth more if you keep hold of it for the historic interest.8 Rare Bills Rarely seen US denominations exist or have existed in the past. Pretty much everyone knows about the $2 bill now, so you can no longer use it to prank people, but another lesser-known (and definitely less likely to be seen) note is the $100,000 that was printed in the 1930s for use between banks as gold notes after the abolition of private gold ownership (these are still illegal to own). These notes made it easier for the US government to rob the entire nation and hand its wealth over to a private company with secret ownership (more on that soon). At other times there were also $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 notes all of which remain legal tender to this day, but--like greenbacks--these are worth more to collectors than their face value so don't spend them!
