Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Finance: With Chapters on Money and Banking No one will question the need of a systematic treatise on National and State finance. The exercise of more intelligent public economy and more efficient justice are matters of great practical importance with many who feel the burden of taxation. These matters are not less vital to the toiling millions, whose struggle to live has grown fiercer under the withering sun of world-wide competition. Nor is the interest of the moralist and patriot less significant, even though it cannot be measured by the same standards of pain and pleasure that are applied to others. I have tried to make a book for that large class of readers who, it is believed, are in quest of information presented in an orderly form concerning public expenditures and revenues, money and banking, and know not where to look in any single work. Of course, many articles may be found in magazines, government reports and the publications dealing with particular financial questions, but something more than these is desired. An explanation may be made concerning the use of references. In a few cases a reference has been given to strengthen the assertion in the text. In other cases references have been added to indicate where more complete sources of readily accessible information may be found, should the reader desire to extend his inquiries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money and Banking: Illustrated by American History Very few persons, if any, are satisfied with our present monetary condition. While I write these lines a withdrawal of $2, 3 gold from the Treasury causes a fresh tremor and confusion of tongues. Everybody assures everybody else, and tries to assure himself, that it is of no consequence. Probably no harm will come of it, but why should it be noticed at all, except by a few dealers in foreign exchange? Because the public Treasury undertakes to maintain the ultimate gold reserve of the country, and because people doubt whether it can do so at all times. Are these doubts unreasonable? The only law on the statute book really effective for the discharge of this obligation was passed in 1862 for a different emergency, had been forgotten a quar ter of a century, and was discovered by accident the last day in the afternoon. As regards the act of 187 5 (under which gold was twice procured last year for the replenish ment of the Treasury) it is a matter of dispute whether it is still in force, or whether it lapsed when specie payments were resumed. A dispute on such a question is itself an incentive to panic. Moreover, everything depends upon the mood and temper of the Administration for the time being whether such powers as the law confers shall be exercised wisely and promptly, or exercised at all. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the foremost financial writers of his generation, Peter Bernstein has the unique ability to synthesize intellectual history and economics with the theory and practice of investment management. Now, with classic titles such as Economist on Wall Street, A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold, and The Price of Prosperity—which have forewords by financial luminaries and new introductions by the author—you can enjoy some of the best of Bernstein in his earlier Wall Street days. With the proliferation of financial instruments, new areas of instability, and innovative capital market strategies, many economists and investors have lost sight of the fundamentals of the financial system—its strengths as well as its weaknesses. A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold takes you back to the beginning and sorts out all the pieces. Peter Bernstein skillfully addresses how and why commercial banks lend and invest, where money comes from, how it moves from hand to hand, and the critical role of interest rates. He explores the Federal Reserve System and the consequences of the Fed's actions on the overall economy. But this book is not just about the past. Bernstein's novel perspective on gold and the dollar is critical for today's decision makers, as he provides extensive views on the future of money, banking, and gold in the world economy. This illuminating story about the heart of our economic system is essential reading at a time when developments in finance are more important than ever.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money and Banking The treatment of Money in Part I follows in a general way the lines made familiar by other standard works to which frequent references are made in the footnotes and m the suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter. The efiort has been made to compress this part of the book into the smallest space consistent with a presentation of essentials in the history, theory and principles of money, leaving the major part of the book for the discussion of the principles and practices of banking. In the chapters devoted to banking organization and practice it has been impossible to give consideration to the varying local cus toms and practices of different types of banking institutions. The aim has been to describe those principles and practices of commercial banking that are common to all banks. Though the new Federal reserve system introduces far reaching changes in our banking and currency system, many years must elapse before its full effects can be definitely measured. Throughout Part II frequent reference is made to various provisions of the Act of 1913, and Chapter XXII is devoted to an analysis of its leading provisions, and a summary of the steps taken in the establishment of the new system. A proper understanding of the new system, how ever, can be gained only by following its Operations and marking the effect of changes that will certainly be made in the law from time to time. It is believed that the addition of the complete text of the Federal Reserve Act (appendix) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Finance: Currency and Banking This book is designed to furnish a description and criticism of the existing currency system in India. I have also dealt with certain subjects which are more or less directly connected with the currency question, such as Banking, the State Bank, the Railway Policy, the Public Debt, etc. Part of this book has appeared in the form of articles in the Modern Review, the East and West, the Commonweal and the Statist (London), and I cordially thank the editors of these periodicals for their permission to reprint the same. The appendices contain the full text of Sir James Bigbie's Note of dissent, summary of the Report of the Royal Commission on Indian Finance and Currency, the evidence, and extracts from the criticisms of the Report by Professor Nicholson and "Asiaticus." A bibliography is also added. The difficulties of the subject are very real to its writer, who has consequently aimed earnestly at clearness, risking platitude and iteration to achieve it. Its shortcomings will be pardoned, by considerate readers, on the ground of the limited leisure in which it was written. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Money and Banking: Selected and Adapted Designed mainly for class room use in connection with one of the introductory manuals on the subject of Money and Banking or of Money and Currency, this volume, in itself, lays no claim to completeness. Where its use is contem plated the problems of emphasis and proportion are, accord ingly, to be solved by the selection of one or another of the available texts, or by the choice of supplementary lecture topics and materials. The contents of the introductory manuals are so divergent in character as to render possible combinations of text and readings that will include, it is hoped, matter of such range and variety as may be desired. Fullness of treatment has been attempted, however, in the chapters dealing with the important recent developments in the mechanism of exchange, and my aim has been through out to Select and, in many instances, to adapt with a view to meeting the wants of those who are interested chiefly in the modern phases of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Money Wars: The Example and Warning of American Finance The title, index and table of contents of this book suffi ciently indicate its scope. Although it has been sent to but a few leading periodicals as yet, the annexed Press Notices show that the claims set up for it are beginning to be acknowledged in very prominent publications. The book purports to be a condensation of the chief financial events, data and arguments that have been chronicled during the past twenty years in all the literature of what is now called the Populist Party. If the views set forth here are mainly correct, the financiering of this nation, as managed by the Republican and Democratic parties, has been a huge madness. Therefore it behooves the would be leaders of public Opinion to seriously consider a book that is being rapidly acknowledged as the most authori tative statement of The American System of Money. To those who have already studied the theories of money in works on political economy or in special treatises on the subject, the first chapter may not be deemed needful. Yet even to such it may serve as a brief, useful review. To those who have not had such an introduction, a presentation of the leading principles of money is needful for a deep and broad comprehension of the duties of sound, conservative banking. This remark applies with especial force to the younger men in our banking institutions who have never read any treatise on political economy or money. The chapters on finance are added because many of our modern banks and trust companies, and especially private hankers, undertake to finance private enterprises, and to some extent even public ones. The passage of the measure was a greater discovery than half a dozen African gold fields. That striking statement with reference to one aspect of banking emphasizes the tremendous force and power of banking in modern economic life. Recent experiences have awakened keener public appreciation of the funda mental problems in banking. Finance in all its relations is very intimate to all of us. Business men are seeing more clearly the business services which a good banking system is capable of rendering them, provided it is used intelligently and understandingly, and the nation as a whole, after many bitter experiences with an inadequate and archaic banking machinery, has awakened to the national and international importance of a scientific money and banking system. The merchant in New York or Pekin could telegraph money or messages in a moment to any part of the globe. Almost at any time. On any day. One could buy transportation to any part of the civilized world. Year after year. With but slight interruptions, this process had been going forward; and year after year the boundaries of what we call civilization were being extended. Then, with paralysing sud denese. This artificial structure of commerce. Trade and finance was submerged as completely as Herculaneum was blotted out by the ashes of Vesuvius. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Modern Banks of Issue The declaration made in the first edition of this work, published in 1896, that financial and economic subjects promised to be "the paramount issues of American politics for many years to come," has been verified by events. While the United States have taken some long steps in the direction of a sound monetary system, the question of a proper banking currency still remains unsettled and is at this moment under investigation by a special commission authorized by Congress. It seems proper, therefore, that a summary of the experience of the world in banking should be presented to the public which includes the events of the past twelve years as well as those of earlier times. The fact stated in the preface to the first edition, that there is no work in English covering exactly the ground covered by Modern Banks of Issue, has remained substantially true. One larger and more elaborate work, written by different authors, and a few bald summaries of facts and statistics have been published, but, apart from these, there is no other volume which brings together in connected and accessible form the record of the banking experiences of the world. Important events have taken place in both banking and political history during the past twelve years. The United States have become competitors for the commercial empire, of the Orient to a degree which has justified much more extended accounts than were given before of banking and currency conditions in Oriental countries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science of Finance: A Practical Treatise is a book authored by economist R.H. Patterson, and is a weighty examination of finance. R.H. Patterson's work is a thorough analysis of the financial systems of Great Britain in the 1860s. The Science of Finance is not an introductory text, but rather more of a case study. The work opens with a macro level view of the credit system in place at the time of the book's writing, a system which the author believes is responsible for much of the nation's economic development. The book goes on to examine many of the principal attributes of the British economy, including the concept of capital, the rate of interest, monetary policies, free trade in banking, municipal finance, and much more. Patterson uses a combination of the theoretical and real-world examples to illustrate his points. The book is concluded by a series of appendices that will appeal to the most ardent of readers. In addition to the practical information contained within, the book also provides the reader with an excellent history of the British financial system, and the keen reader will certainly identify the major changes that have taken place since the publication of this text. R.H. Patterson's The Science of Finance: A Practical Treatise is a challenging but informative book about the financial system of England in the nineteenth century.
