Download or read book Syria’s Conflict Economy written by Jeanne Gobat and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five years into the ongoing and tragic conflict, the paper analyzes how Syria’s economy and its people have been affected and outlines the challenges in rebuilding the economy. With extreme limitations on information, the findings of the paper are subject to an extraordinary degree of uncertainty. The key messages are: (1) that the devastating civil war has set the country back decades in terms of economic, social and human development. Syria’s GDP today is less than half of what it was before the war started and it could take two decades or more for Syria to return to its pre-conflict GDP levels; and that (2) while reconstructing damaged physical infrastructure will be a monumental task, rebuilding Syria’s human and social capital will be an even greater and lasting challenge.

Book Synopsis The Private Banking Sector in Syria by :
Download or read book The Private Banking Sector in Syria written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decade after the beginning of the Syrian uprising in 2011, the country's private banking sector is facing many challenges and obstacles. Private banks were forced to considerably reduce their operations as a result of the destruction of the Syrian economy and international sanctions, which have further isolated the country's banking system from the world market. Moreover, the real value of private banks' assets and deposits has significantly contracted since 2011. Foreign entities with strategic partnerships in the sector have mostly taken a passive approach while some have sought to cut all relations with Syria, leading to complete withdrawals from the country in some cases. At the same time, prominent businessmen including, but not exclusively, sanctioned individuals have resigned from the boards of directors of the private banks and have sold their shares in the companies. Most of the members of the new class of business figures who emerged during the war have not invested in this sector, with the notable exception of a few prominent individuals. In this context, only a small proportion of the private banks have tried to remain active in the Syrian market through various types of operations including loans. At the same time, these banks have sought to capture international funding for humanitarian assistance in regime-held areas. Microfinance is also seen by some private banks as an opportunity to expand their reach among the Syrian population, which suffers from an extremely high level of poverty. This, however, is not enough to expect the private banking sector to play a vital role in a potential recovery of the economy or a reconstruction process.
Book Synopsis Monetary Policy and Central Banking in the Middle East and North Africa by : David Cobham
Download or read book Monetary Policy and Central Banking in the Middle East and North Africa written by David Cobham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-13 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines monetary policy, central banking and exchange rate regimes in the Middle East and North Africa. Part I covers central banking and monetary policy, while Part II covers monetary policy and exchange rate regimes. Some chapters focus on the monetary frameworks of particular countries, including Lebanon, Algeria, Syria, Tunisia, Morocco, and Turkey, outlining the different systems operated in each case, considering their successes and failures, and discussing important issues such as government policy, macroeconomic performance, inflation and inflation targeting, central bank independence and the impact of broader political economic developments on the conduct of monetary policy. Other chapters cover thematic issues across the whole region, including: central bank independence, operations of debtor central banks, the effect of exchange rates on inflation, and the effect on countries’ trade of alternative exchange rate regimes. Drawing on the insights of scholars and policy-makers, this book is a vital resource for anyone wanting to understand the economies of the Middle East and North Africa.
