Book excerpt: Following the death of his young daughter, the narrator moves to Japan with the project of writing an essay on Japanese literature. There, on the other side of the earth, he experiences a series of incidents that connect him to a recurrent childhood dream and allow him to explore the depth of his own grief through the stories of others. Sarinagara is a poignant meditation on the nature of grief, art, and memory. In Japanese, "Sarinagara" means "and yet." This word is the last word of one of the most famous poems of Japanese literature.

Although this story is intended for young readers, adult readers will also enjoy this beautiful, mystical tale. Spark’s joy of being in nature, whether through play or contemplation, brought her to Red Rock Mesa and her solid friend Rock. This is where she also met a special bird, full of wisdom: Falcon.

Book Synopsis COMMENT DEVENIR INVISIBLE by : GODFROY BOURSIQUOT
Download or read book COMMENT DEVENIR INVISIBLE written by GODFROY BOURSIQUOT and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HOW TO BECOME INVISIBLE. Whenever I could, being the good old journalist that I am, I would write about what I've experienced and what I've observed Being an immigrant who did not speak the language of my new home, but was educated in my native country, I know first-hand about being misjudged and dismissed. Immigrants try their best to fit in, going against the reality of exclusion in all its forms: social, economic and cultural. The challenge for newcomers is not just to find a job, but to find a purpose for this new life, the right cause worthy of fighting for, and a way to contribute. People immigrate to America from around the world with a preconceived vision that is very far from the reality of their evolving new life. I was one of them. Leaving your native country for whatever reason and trying to make it in another is obviously not easy because the culture, language, and traditions are so different. Unfamiliarity and the sense of being alone, away from loved ones, plus the desire to go back home, constantly permeate your thinking. Knowing that it is not feasible is heartbreaking. It is the people you meet along the way that can unknowingly give you the strength to continue. Each new person you meet brings something to the table, each one like a piece of a puzzle that all together forms a beautiful picture; each one trusting that whatever they contribute is unique and important so things can go smoothly. This realization keeps you going, especially at work, performing tasks that you've never done before. My eyes are closed and my pen struggles to release memory to share the experience of climbing the stairs of life's lessons. If you are climbing, it is always good to look back without asking others to have pity on your struggle. Climbing the stairs of life requires courage to take the steps one by one with peace and love. The days go by and the silence is still there: we work, look, listen, meditate, and observe while there is time. Being an observer is like a lesson of wisdom with flexible rules, giving you the opportunity to become invisible while you learn and grow. I started my first job in the kitchen, carrying the food as well as washing dishes. Under the quiet gaze of my supervisor, while performing my duties, I observed and reflected about all the people around me - coworkers, supervisors, and the clients we were there to serve. Sometimes life's circumstances force us to stay behind the curtains, But this becomes a place of observation that is enriching. Godfroy Boursiquot

Book Synopsis Debussy's Paris by : Catherine Kautsky
Download or read book Debussy's Paris written by Catherine Kautsky and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claude Debussy’s exquisite piano works have captivated generations with their dreamlike atmosphere and mysterious soundscapes. Written in Paris at the height of the Belle Époque, the music creates a soundtrack for Parisians’ enjoyment of such delights as clowns, mermaids, eccentric dances, and the dark tales of Edgar Allan Poe. Debussy’s Paris: Piano Portraits of the Belle Époque explores how key works reflect not only the most appealing and innocent aspects of Paris but also more disquieting attitudes of the time such as racism, colonial domination, and nationalistic hostility. Debussy left no avenue unexplored, and his piano works present a sweeping overview of the passions, vices, and obsessions of the era. Pianist Catherine Kautsky reveals little-known elements of Parisian culture and weaves the music, the man, the city, and the era into an indissoluble whole. Her portrait will delight anyone who has ever been entranced by Debussy’s music or the city that inspired it.
Book Synopsis Extravagant Narratives by : Elizabeth Jane MacArthur
Download or read book Extravagant Narratives written by Elizabeth Jane MacArthur and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the view of epistolary narrative as a faulty precursor to the nineteenth-century realist novel, Elizabeth MacArthur argues that the openness and flexibility that characterize correspondences, both real and fictional, reflect the preoccupations of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Her readings of the Lettres portugaises, Mme du Deffand's correspondence with Horace Walpole, and Rousseau's La Nouvelle Hlose propose an alternative to closure-oriented theories of narrative as they uncover an interplay between two forces: a tendency towards closure and meaning (metaphor) and a tendency towards openness and desire (metonymy). While such an interplay structures all narrative, the epistolary form differs from the third or first person in the extent to which metonymy predominates. The author shows how critics and editors of correspondences have attempted to control their metonymy, channeling epistolary energy into univocal meaning. By juxtaposing real and fictional epistolary works, MacArthur reveals the similarities between the two, particularly their "extravagance": ambiguity, openness, and forward-moving energy. Book Synopsis The New Logic of Sexual Violence in Enlightenment France by : Mary McAlpin
Download or read book The New Logic of Sexual Violence in Enlightenment France written by Mary McAlpin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-08 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that rape as we know it was invented in the eighteenth century, examining texts as diverse as medical treatises, socio-political essays, and popular novels to demonstrate how cultural assumptions of gendered sexual desire erased rape by making a woman’s non-consent a logical impossibility. The Enlightenment promotion of human sexuality as natural and desirable required a secularized narrative for how sexual violence against women functioned. Novel biomedical and historical theories about the "natural" sex act worked to erase the concept of heterosexual rape. McAlpin intervenes in a far-ranging assortment of scholarly disciplines to survey and demonstrate how rape was rationalized: the history of medicine, the history of sexuality, the development of the modern self, the social contractarian tradition, the global eighteenth century, and the libertine tradition in the eighteenth-century novel. This intervention will be essential reading to students and scholars in gender studies, literature, cultural studies, visual studies, and the history of sexuality.
