Book Synopsis Beyond the Language Frontier by : Evangelia Balta
Download or read book Beyond the Language Frontier written by Evangelia Balta and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present volume first offers a revisit of her in-depth studies of the Karamanlis, the Turcophone Rum people native to Karamania, the wider Cappadocia region of Anatolia. The second part of the book presents selected articles discussing the Karamanlidika Press of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, covering both published and unpublished material in Turkish printed in Greek characters. The articles are based on painstaking research in the Ottoman archives and present formerly unknown material. One of the objectives of Balta’s research has been to illuminate the relationship between the Ottoman, Armeno-Turkish and Karamanlidika literatures by acquiring an overview of the publications available in all of these scripts and the translations from one script to another. As suggested by the title, through this work she seeks to go beyond the language frontiers in order to shed new light on Ottoman history" --
Book Synopsis Far from My Father by : Véronique Tadjo
Download or read book Far from My Father written by Véronique Tadjo and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To attain some sort of universal value," Véronique Tadjo has said, "a piece of work has to go deep into the particular in order to reveal our shared humanity." In Far from My Father, the latest novel from this internationally acclaimed author, a woman returns to the Côte d'Ivoire after her father’s death. She confronts not only unresolved family issues that she had left behind but also questions about her own identity that arise amidst the tensions between traditional and modern worlds. The drama that unfolds tells us much about the evolving role of women, the legacy of polygamy, and the economic challenges of daily life in Abidjan. On a more autobiographical level, the author depicts a daughter’s efforts to come to terms with what she knew and did not know about her father. Set against the backdrop of civil strife that has wracked the Côte d'Ivoire since the turn of the century, this story shows Tadjo’s remarkable ability to inhabit a character’s inner world and emotional landscape while creating a narrative of great historic and cultural dimensions. Book Synopsis The Superstitious Mind by : Judith Devlin
Download or read book The Superstitious Mind written by Judith Devlin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This intriguing book examines popular religion, traditional medicine, witchcraft, apparitions, demonology, and magic in nineteenth-century rural France. Devlin demonstrates that many of the impulses and mental processes now considered superstitious constituted a wholly reasonable response to the pressures of a harsh and impoverished life. Far from the product of a primitive mentality, many of these beliefs have survived in modern culture and can even illuminate the nature of modern mass politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Uncertain Territories by : Inge E. Boer
Download or read book Uncertain Territories written by Inge E. Boer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing and theorizing the concept of the boundaries through literary works, visual objects and cultural phenomena, this book argues against the reification of boundaries as fixed and empty non-spaces that simply divide the world. Expanding on her previous work on gender and Orientalism, Inge Boer takes us into uncertain territories of fashion and art, tourism and travel, skilfully engaging the ambivalence of boundaries, as both protecting and confining, as bringing distinction while existing by virtue of their ability to be transgressed. In her close readings of that boundaries as desert, as frame, as home (or lack of it), Boer shows that boundaries are spaces within, through, and in the name of which negotiations take place. They are not lines but spaces ; neither fixed nor empty but flexible and inhabited. With the publication of this book, Boer’s intellectual legacy stretches beyond her untimely passing. The writings that she left behind can be said to have inaugurated the future of her work, presented in the latter part by several of Boer’s intellectual companions. In their original essays, the contributors elaborate on Boer’s theme of boundaries as spaces where opposition yields to negotiation. Committed to the artefact as cultural stimulant, as the embodiment of thought, their analyses span a multitude of artefacts and media, ranging from literature to photography, to art installation and presentation, to film and song. Fanning out from Boer ‘s central focus – Orientalism – to other places of contestation, boundaries are shown to mediate the relationship between self and other ; they are, ultimately, spaces of encounter.
