Book excerpt: Point-to-point vs. hub-and-spoke. Questions of network design are real and involve many billions of dollars. Yet little is known about optimising design - nearly all work concerns optimising flow assuming a given design. This foundational book, first published in 2007, tackles optimisation of network structure itself, deriving comprehensible and realistic design principles. With fixed material cost rates, a natural class of models implies the optimality of direct source-destination connections, but considerations of variable load and environmental intrusion then enforce trunking in the optimal design, producing an arterial or hierarchical net. Its determination requires a continuum formulation, which can however be simplified once a discrete structure begins to emerge. Connections are made with the masterly work of Bendsøe and Sigmund on optimal mechanical structures and also with neural, processing and communication networks, including those of the Internet and the World Wide Web. Technical appendices are provided on random graphs and polymer models and on the Klimov index.

Book excerpt: In the northern Slovenian city of Murska, Sobota stands the renowned Hotel Dobray, once the gathering place of townspeople of all nationalities and social strata who lived in this typical town on the fringe of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. It had always been home to numerous ethnically and culturally mixed communities that gave it the charm and melos of Central-European identity. But now, in the thick of World War II, the town is occupied by the Hungarian army. Franz Schwartz's wife, Ellsie has been preparing their son Isaac, a gifted violinist, for his first solo concert, which is to take place at Hotel Dobray. Isaac is to perform on his bar mitzvah and 13th birthday on April 26, 1944. When the German army marches into town and forces all Jews to display yellow stars on their clothes, Ellsie advises her husband that the family should flee the town and escape to Switzerland. Schwartz promises her he will obtain forged documents, but not before Isaac performs his concert at the hotel. A year later, in March 1945, Schwartz returns, on foot, from the concentration camp as one of the few survivors.

Mankind longs to be touched! His existence began with hands that so gently sculpted his very being. Those hands molded mankind into the image of He who created all things. Unwittingly, mankind wanders off from the Fathers embrace into the darkness, becoming lost, alone and aching for the safety and comfort he once knew. Have you ever felt the desire of arms to embrace you and bring comfort to your soul? Just as the literal birth canal is dark and disorienting so too are some of lifes challenges. Know that in the darkest hour, when life as one knows it suddenly shifts, the Fathers arms are there, like a doctor at an impending birth, ready to catch and comfort each of us upon our emergence whether it is from dark nights, one or many dark encounters or a dark past. Guided by the Creator, Momma Braxton and Martha Mae develop from a divine conception and spiritual gestation in the womb to a thriving infancy and adulthood in Christianity. Take a journey down the birth canal with the author, experience the complications, and witness as each contraction pushes both Momma Braxton and Martha Mae closer to the waiting hands of the Fathers embrace.

Book excerpt: In his debut collection, The Fight for Space, Roberto Ontiveros explores the modes of art and obsession with eleven stories that run from fabulist comedy to surrealist noir. The tales--focusing on the inner lives of adult caregivers, delivery drivers, and painters--trace how the ubiquity of media (the world of sitcoms, talk radio, and superhero comics) comes to flood the working class with a dream-like dread. In this book, a budding con artist tries to sell a house that does not belong to her, an anti-social memoirist pens the fates of his friends, and a comic book-obsessed warehouse employee follows a man who wears a gas mask. Atmospheric and erotic, the stories in The Fight for Space, recall the literary mysteries of James M. Cain by way of Twin Peaks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Get cooking and enjoy some old-time good foods” with this treasury of Southern recipes from a Tennessee farm family in the 1930s and 1940s (Cannon Courier). Author Ibbie Ledford, born and raised in the Tennessee hills, offers her special recipes along with some cherished personal memories. Hill Country treats and staples, traditional fare, and modern favorites are all included here. Recipes for Hand-Squashed Biscuits, Corn Fritters, Chicken Pot Pie, Baked Cheese Grits, Shepherd’s Pie, Flapjacks and Hot Blackberry Jam, Deer Steaks and Gravy, Squirrel Stew with Potato Dumplings, Fried Okra, Turnip Greens, Wilted Lettuce Salad, Buttermilk Pie, and Beef Jerky are accompanied by peculiar (to some) Hill Country customs, such as how to clean and pluck a chicken, kill a hog, boil a country ham, fry chitterlings, and make inexpensive Christmas tree ornaments. Interspersed throughout the book are Ibbie’s memoirs—deliciously funny and warmly touching tales of growing up poor but well provided for in rural Tennessee more than sixty years ago. Recall with Ibbie such scenes as porch sitting, Papa’s monthly trek into town to buy supplies (and surprises for the children!), the excitement of a dance at the house, preaching all day and dinner on the grounds (with a recipe for Scripture Cake), and the arrival of May 1—time to take off the winter underwear and go barefoot—the first outhouse for the family, and many more stories that will bring back memories and touch your heart.

Book excerpt: The Exodus is not a myth! For centuries people have debated whether the Bible's book of Exodus was a historical account of Moses' journey from Egypt, or if the story was a legend or allegorical in nature. In fact, none of these are correct. The set of stories that make up the Exodus account in the Bible are not unfounded or based on false notions. The Exodus is not a legend in the strictest definition of the word. A legend is an account based on potentially historical events, but events that are not verifiable. The Exodus is not a legend because much of the narrative is verifiable. Why then do the vast majority of Biblical scholars and Egyptologists regard the Exodus as being predominantly, if not entirely, manufactured? Because there is no single event in all of Egyptian history that matches with all of the events depicted in the Exodus narrative, which appears to be the story of a singular event. This is the problem with the standard analysis of the Exodus; scholars try to fit the story to a single event from a single author. But there were at least four primary authors work which was originally separate material written hundreds of years apart and the Exodus of people from Egypt to Canaan happened not once, but twice. In a process described by the Documentary Hypothesis, the work of these authors and the two Exodus events were magnificently and intricately combined into a single work looking like a single event that was the foundation of the Israelite religion: the Double Exodus Theory.

The poems in Rust & Weeds are glimpses of life in the Midwest, often bright with color, sometimes shrouded in gray. Moyer writes, "So very little impresses me anymore," followed a few pages later by an ode to the small things that bring him joy. Moyer's eye and ear for detail capture the contradictions that make our lives unique and so much like one another. -Mike Graves, Shadow of Death

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Irish Literature and Identities is the second volume of James Liddy's critical essays, following On American Literature and Diasporas. Though it makes great swerves and has multiple frames of reference, On Irish Literature and Identities is framed by James Liddy's intense and enduring attachment to Dublin. Even when he is looking beyond Dublin, as is the case in his essays on poets from the-North of Ireland, he writes from a perspective heavily shaded by Dublin opinion. As a student James Liddy began to engage with Dublin's literary and bohemian culture, and meeting Patrick Kavanagh was the singular event that changed his life. James Liddy writes about the writers he encountered during these years and brings alive a vanished world. Though this world was highly social, Liddy is interested in its literary aspect, the ways in which the literary and the social cross paths in bars, restaurants, lecture theatres, bookshops and in publishing houses. In many respects the world he describes is one in which barriers between public and private worlds are erased. Throughout these essays, Liddy engages with both the writers and their work and with the literary traditions from which they emerged. This· is a book of literary-academic-and bohemian witness written in an engaging, brilliant, and unique voice. Though best-known as a poet, James Liddy wrote and published in a variety of other literary genres: the critical essay, the personal essay, and the novella. Among the writers whose work he explores in On Irish Literature and Identities are George Moore, Samuel Beckett, Patrick Kavanagh, Austin Clarke, Seamus Heaney, Padraic Fiacc, Thomas Kinsella, Frank McGuinness and Thomas McCarthy. The greater part of his academic life was spent at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee where he began teaching in 1976. Throughout his American career, James Liddy made frequent visits to Ireland and maintained a visible presence on the Irish literary scene as a member of Aosdana and as a frequent contributor to Irish journals and newspapers including The Irish Times.

Book excerpt: Globalization connects governments, cultures, and economies, making it easier for people to make, sell, and buy goods worldwide. It brings different people more easily into contact, but it can also disrupt traditional cultures. It helps create jobs in poor countries and allows businesses to make goods more cheaply. However, it can also widen the gap between rich and poor. Globalization explains how people are working to bring the positive effects of globalization to populations around the world.
