Book Synopsis Songs of the Soul by : Paramhansa Yogananda
Download or read book Songs of the Soul written by Paramhansa Yogananda and published by . This book was released on 2024-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Original Writings of Paramhansa Yogananda Paramhansa Yogananda is best known for his Autobiography of a Yogi, a book that he said the Lord Himself commissioned him to write, in response to a silent call among many souls for a "practical religion" that would enable them to know the Divinity that dwells in their own hearts and souls. Those who met Yogananda were overwhelmed by the magnetic power of his love. Saints and sages recognized him as one of their own. Sri Anandamoy Ma, Ramana Maharshi, Sri Rama Yogi, and Mahatma Gandhi-these and many other great souls perceived in him an avatar, God incarnated with the power to redeem not only a few close disciples but a vast flock who would be transformed by his divine ray. "As a bright light shining in the midst of darkness, so was Yogananda's presence in this world. Such a great soul comes on earth only rarely, when there is a real need among men." - The Shankaracharya of Kanchipuram, spiritual leader of millions of Hindus. Though divinely tasked with bringing a practical teaching, Yogananda preferred to express his wisdom not in dry intellectual terms but as pure, expansive feeling. To drink his poetry is to be drawn into the web of his boundless, childlike love. Nor was his vision limited to this earthly plane - in one moment his Songs of the Soul invite us to join him as he plays among the stars with his Cosmic Beloved. Then they call us to discover that portion of our own hearts that is eternally one with the Nearest and Dearest. Like his famous Whispers From Eternity, this volume is a bubbling, singing wellspring of spiritual healing that we can bring with us everywhere. (Also included is the addition of five poems not included in the original, 1923 edition.)
Book Synopsis Literary Translation, Reception, and Transfer by : Norbert Bachleitner
Download or read book Literary Translation, Reception, and Transfer written by Norbert Bachleitner and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.
Book Synopsis Philippe Garrel by : Michael Leonard
Download or read book Philippe Garrel written by Michael Leonard and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-17 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described by Giles Deleuze as ‘one of the greatest modern auteurs’, Philippe Garrel is widely acknowledged as the most significant filmmaker to emerge in France after the New Wave. His deeply personal cinema traces the troubled sentimental lives of couples, exploring the relationship between art and political struggle. This study observes the eclecticism of the director’s influences, looking to avant-garde movements such as the Situationists, Surrealism, Arte Povera and the American Underground, in order to explore his original body of work. Consideration is also given to Garrel’s relationship with other members of the so-called ‘post-New Wave’, including Jean Eustache and Chantal Akerman. The first book on Garrel’s cinema to appear in English, it will appeal to Garrel enthusiasts as well as to students and lecturers specialising in film studies or French studies.

Book Synopsis Cinema and Sensation by : Martine Beugnet
Download or read book Cinema and Sensation written by Martine Beugnet and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cinema and Sensation: " "French Film and the Art of Transgression" looks at a much-debated phenomenon in contemporary cinema: the reemergence of filmmaking practices (and, by extension, of theoretical approaches) that give precedence to cinema as the medium of the senses.France offers an intriguing case in point here. A specific sense of momentum comes from the release, in close succession, of a series of films that exemplify a characteristic awareness of cinema s sensory impact and transgressive nature: "Adieu"; "A ma soeur"; "Baise-moi"; "Beau Travail"; "La Blessure"; "La Captive"; "Dans ma peau"; "Demonlover"; "L Humanite"; "Flandres"; "L Intrus"; "Les Invisibles"; "Lady Chatterley"; "Lecons de tenebres"; "Romance"; "Sombre"; "Tiresia"; "Trouble Every Day"; "Twentynine Palms"; "Vendredi soir"; "La Vie nouvelle"; "Wild Side"; and "Zidane, un portrait du XXIeme siecle." These films, among others, typify a willingness to explore cinema s unique capacity to move us both viscerally and intellectually.Martine Beugnet focuses on the crucial and fertile overlaps that occur between experimental and mainstream cinema. Her book draws on the writings of Deleuze, Merleau-Ponty, and Bataille, among others, but first and foremost, she develops her arguments from the films themselves, from the comprehensive description of specific sequences, techniques, and motifs that allows us to engage with the works as material events and as thinking processes. In turn, she demonstrates how the films, envisaged as forms of embodied thought, offer alternative ways of approaching today s most burning sociocultural debatesfrom the growing supremacy of technology, to globalization, exile, and exclusion."
