Book Synopsis Coffee Will Make You Black by : April Sinclair
Download or read book Coffee Will Make You Black written by April Sinclair and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A funny, fresh novel about growing up African-American in 1960s Chicago” by an author who “writes like Terry McMillan’s kid sister” (Entertainment Weekly). In this hilarious and insightful coming-of-age novel, author April Sinclair introduces the charming Jean “Stevie” Stevenson, a young woman raised on Chicago’s South Side during an era of irrevocable social upheaval. Curious and witty, bold but naïve, Stevie grows up debating the qualities of good hair and dark skin. As the years pass, her family and neighborhood are changed by the times, from the War on Poverty to race riots and the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., from “Black Is Beautiful” to Black Power. Against this remarkable backdrop, Stevie makes the sometimes harrowing, often comic, always enthralling transformation into a young adult—socially aware, discovering her sexuality, and proud of her identity. “Whether she’s dealing with a subject as monumental as the civil rights movement or as intimate as Stevie’s first sexual encounters,” writes the Los Angeles Times, “Sinclair never fails to make you laugh and never sacrifices the narrative to make a point.” Winner of the Carl Sandburg Award from the Friends of the Chicago Public Library and named a best book of the year in young adult fiction by the American Library Association, Coffee Will Make You Black is an exquisite portrait of adolescence that will resonate with readers of all ages.

Book excerpt: Last November, I found a dead body inside the freezer that my roommate keeps inside the garage. My first thought was to call the police, but Jignesh hadn't paid his share of the rent just yet. It wasn't due until the thirtieth, and you know how difficult it is to find people who pay on time. Jignesh always does. Also, he had season tickets for the LA Opera, and well . . . Madame Butterfly. Tosca. The Flying Dutchman . . . at the Dorothy Chandler . . . you cannot say no to that, can you? Well, it's been a few good months now--Madame Butterfly was just superb, thank you. However, last Friday, I found a second body inside that stupid freezer in the garage. This time I'm evicting Jignesh. My house isn't a mortuary . . . alas, I need to come up with some money first. You'll understand, therefore, that I desperately need to sell this novel. Just enough copies to help me survive until I find a job . . . what could I do that doesn't demand too much effort? We have a real treasure here, anyhow. Some chapters are almost but not quite pornographic. You could safely lend this to nana afterward!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Janice Wilson Kassel is an Iowa farm wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother extraordinaire. From her earliest memories growing up in southern Iowa, Janice loved to read and write and dreamed of becoming a teacher. After graduating from New Market High in 1949, the young valedictorian ventured off to Iowa State University, where she studied home economics, developed lifelong friends, and met her husband, Ken Kassel. The two were married on December 16, 1951, at the Collegiate Methodist Church in Ames, where theyd met the year before. Starting out in DeKalb, Illinois, the couple would become parents to the first of four children within a year, and eventually return to the family farm in northwest Iowa, in 1959. Over the next 60 years, Janice raised her family, ran the farm books, took care of the lawn, fed the troops and served in a multitude of community activities. At 87, Janice is one of the busiest octogenarians you will ever meet, maintaining a full social calendar of church events, garden club, and coffee and cards with friends, even as she keeps up with 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her desire to leave a legacy in the form of this book is her expression of deepest gratitude to her family and the life she was given and has enjoyed to the fullest.
