Book excerpt: Remember when farm families did their own butchering, mothers stayed home, folks churned their own butter, canned vegetables and meat, shucked corn, thrashed wheat, used a washboard, walked to church and school and had corncob fights? . When girls (or at least my sisters) curled their hair with curling irons heated in the chimney of a kerosene lamp. . When kids learned to work on the farm, both at home and for the neighbors - and considered it a privilege just to be allowed to participate. . When, at school, the two big challenging recess games for boys were mumble peg and marbles. . When kids who had brothers in the service during World War II shared the worry and agony with their parents, to learn of some neighbor families whose son never came home. . When parents hung little flags in their doors or windows that contained a star for each son in the service -- like the two stars on our flag for my brothers Alvin and Howard. . When we shared in rationing, and we painstakingly saved the foil from cigarette packages and turned it in for the war effort. . When grandma came to visit and brightened up life by making room in her suitcase for chewing gum for the kids and chewing tobacco for herself. . When grandma taught me to catch a chicken and wring its head off - all for the promise of her homemade chicken and noodles. . When we visualized the scenes when glued to the radio listening to Tom Mix, Gene Autry, Jack Armstrong, Inner Sanctum, and Lucky Strike Hit Parade. We thought we had almost everything - looking back, we had a pretty good quality of life. At times I find myself wishing for the return to the more simple ways of life.

Book excerpt: Mama's Boy describes the life of author Robert Hood: his early years in a coal-mining village during the Depression, his life in the navy during World War II, and his later professional success. At the heart of Hood's memoir is his proud and talented mother, who is determined that her headstrong son will become somebody. But the impish boy is more interested in sports than poetry recitations or declamation contests. Anxious to enter the war, seventeen-year-old Hood enlists in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and serves on Guam. He returns, attends college, and eventually ends up in New York City as the editor-in-chief of Boys' Life Magazine. As Hood achieves success, he meets some of the distinguished artists and authors of the twentieth century. He lunches with Andre Kertesz, Alex Haley, and Isaac Asimov; takes tea with Salvador Dali and Philippe Halsman; and chats on the phone with Margaret Coit, Catherine Drinker Bowen, and Margaret Bourke-White. He also interviews great athletes such as Hank Greenberg, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays. But most important to Hood are those people in his family who mentored him so well. Mama's Boy pays tribute to his parents, grandparents, siblings, uncles, and aunt. His love for them bears witness to the endurance of human memory.

Book excerpt: Plainfolk: Stories from the Fraess Farm and Planer Colonists is a wide-ranging cultural expedition into a unique diaspora of German-Russian farmers, told in the most personal voice. Here is the tale of the Planer Colonists, of which the Fraesses and Kowalskys were prominent members, and the tremendous impact they had on their families and the communities they cultivated, both before and after their move from their Prussian homeland to their adopted home in rural Canada. Plainfolk traces the author’s ancestry back generations to the German-Russian diaspora that arose in the mid-1700s, yet became extinct in the early 1900s. It explores the reasons her ancestors left Prussia in 1818 and 1819, then left South Russia in 1904 and 1906. And it travels with its people to Canada, in pursuit of a different life, where they went on to play a significant role in developing the Canadian Prairies. The author, who traces both sides of her ancestry to this special group of pioneers, enhances this deeply researched collection of family history with such personal touches as family trees, photos, illustrations, and recipes. The result is a comprehensive snapshot of a remarkable group of pioneers who, Jurgens says, may have been “plain folk,” but were always “extraordinary.”

As Southern Living says “Southerner’s shun the simple, the straightforward, and the direct in favor of more colorful means of self-expression, Southern style.” There seems to be a Southern saying for every occasion. Some are inspiring and uplifting while others have that biting tongue-in-cheek humor Southerners adore.

Book excerpt: The Myers cabin still sits on the original cornerstones where it has stood for over 130 years. The cabin’s logs were cut from red beech that were numerous then. It was built around 1870 by Louis Myers with the help of Alvis and Samuel Banks who hewed the logs. After Carl Myers parents died in the mid 1940’s the cabin was used for storage and also used to shed a school bus under the back porch roof. Later the front and back porches were removed and the protective weather boarding was removed leaving it to the mercy of the elements. In 1995 & 1996 the cabin underwent major restoration. Several logs had to be replaced as well as the chinking. The porches were put back on. Oak shingles were split too cover the roofs. The author and his two friends Mark Wolfal and Dick Sharke volunteered their time for this two year project. Also Norman Click helped when he could.

Book excerpt: The Greek pre-Socratic philosophers Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes of Miletus are generally considered the intellectual revolutionaries and founders of Western philosophy and science. They appear in the literature as "the first" in long lineages of individuals who have contributed to the advancement of ideas and knowledge. They are, however, not the only Milesians who have made their imprints on the pages of history and literature. The classical texts mention in excess of 200 historical and legendary citizens, and occasional residents, who prior to and following Thales made their marks in astronomy, geometry, mathematics, history, law, politics, cartography, town-planning, poetry, rhetoric, architecture and more. The story begins with the establishment of Minoan and Mycaenean settlements in southern Anatolia, and the legendary founders and citizens of Miletus. It moves on to a more detailed discussion of the lives and contributions of the natural philosophers Thales and his associates Anaximander and Anaximenes, and beyond them to an interesting variety of gifted citizens and residents, all of whom brought fame to the ancient city during the Ionian rebellion, the Persian and Peloponnesian wars, the conquest of Ionia by Alexander the Great, and the fragmentation of Alexander''s empire during the time of the Diadochii, or "War of the Generals". It concludes with the domination of Asia Minor by the Romans during the late Republic and Empire up to the end of the Byzantine period. It is an exciting ''Anthology'' of a city and its talented achievers as set against a background of widely different political circumstances, regional conflicts, rebellions, wars and occupations first under the Hittites, and then under the rulers of Persia, Greece, Sparta, Macedonia, Egypt, Syria, Rome, Byzantium and the Turks. The subject is of ongoing interest to historians, archaeologists and students of classical history, literature, science, religion and philosophy, as well as to amateurs and laymen who are keenly interested in Mediterranean antiquity. The purpose of the story is to stimulate interest, elicit dialogue, and provide readers with a fair measure of enjoyment.

Book excerpt: I've lived in Oregon for over forty-five years, but if you ask me who I am in my heart, I'd have to say I'm still a southern girl from New Orleans. I guess you never lose those early roots. I also grew up during a time when life was much simpler. No stores were open on Sunday because that was a day for church and family. Christmas meant getting one main toy. I could ride my bicycle safely many blocks from home. A nickel candy bar was five inches long. Movies weren't rated because they were all made for family viewing. And TV was in its infancy so we found other more exciting things to do. Maybe this book will give you a snapshot back in time and a glimpse into the various escapades and misadventures of one little girl growing up in New Orleans in the 1940s and 50s. Fully Indexed.

Book excerpt: SURVIVAL OF A TEXAN Before the days of McDonalds, Best Western and affordable telephones, two sets of Grandparents, not knowing of the other's plans, set out on a 75 mile trip by horse & buggy, to await the arrival of an expected Grandchild. It was a three day journey. They slept under the buggies at night on quilts placed on top of tarpaulins. The father of the expected baby was caught in a fi erce "Blue Norther" while trying to get a doctor. Despite the dilemma, a baby Boy was born. He was an adventurous little boy intent on working for money at an early age. His Dad was generally a loving father but became abusive when he was drinking hard liquor. Billy Boy took on the responsibility of the support of the family at an early age. He bought his fi rst house at the age of twelve and remodeled it with a little help. At the age of 18 {actually 17} he went off to war where he was critically wounded twice on the same day and was given the Last Rites. A bullet entered below his right ear exploded in his mouth and a part of his right check was blown away. He was in a fi erce battle in the retaking of Manila. A freighter, which was converted to a hospital ship, was transporting Bill and others from Leyte to Hollandia, New Guinea. It was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and the crippled ship moved on slowly toward Hollandia, NG. The submarine was obliterated by a US Navy escort. Bill was "Born Again" in a foxhole. His faith in Jesus has carried him through the rough times and personal tragedies. You must read this fascinating book of Bill's unusual and eventful life.

In Your Dreams Sierra has had it! She’s done everything she can to find the right job, good friends, and most important, true love. But nothing is working out. Now she has to stay home to care for her grandmother. By herself. For the whole weekend! It will be terrible. But a series of startling surprises shows Sierra just how wrong she is—and before she knows it, she’s on her way to the perfect job, her first real date, and an encounter with a mysterious stranger. Don’t You Wish Sierra has three wishes: visit her California friends; have her older sister, Tawni, disappear; and learn more about the mysterious stranger. When Easter break arrives, Sierra’s first wish comes true! She’s headed to Newport Beach for fun, sun, and surf. Unfortunately, not only does Tawni not disappear, she accompanies Sierra on her escape. What’s worse, everyone has a boyfriend except Sierra. But will her wishes begin to change as she realizes God wants to mold her according to His wishes? Story Behind the Book “After writing the twelve-book Christy Miller series for teens, a new character showed up on the pages of the final novel. Her name was Sierra Jensen, and she was so compelling as a teenage character that readers began asking for a series about Sierra in order to hear more about her life choices. Our family had just moved to Portland at the time, and I found it easy to picture a sixteen-year-old like Sierra shopping at the local vintage clothing stores, hanging out with friends at a garage band concert, and serving at the homeless shelter on weekends.” —Robin Jones Gunn

Book excerpt: After leading a pretty staid and frankly boring life Drusilla Montgomery lands the job of her dreams…working as an assistant to her all time forever favorite romance writer, Gabrielle George. Gabrielle’s assistant, Justin Hunt, is also a slice of Dru’s dreams – tall, dark, handsome and with a nice set of pecs and buns. Night after night they work side by side, answering fan mail, proofreading manuscripts and keeping up the famed author’s social media sites. For Dru this is more than a job. With the death of her strict and controlling mother – a woman very much like the starchy housekeeper in a dark gothic – Dru finally has a chance to pursue the life of her own dreams. Traveling from the sleepy cities of Marin County, California over the Golden Gate bridge to Gabrielle’s Victorian seems like entering an entire new world. Like the fog lifting over San Francisco bay, Dru’s life takes on new color. Even when her mother reaches out from the grave in the guise of her attorney who threatens to take her home from her, Dru remains undaunted. As she gets deeper into the job, however, questions are raised about her oh so handsome co-worker – Justin. He is never seen in daylight, he doesn’t eat and there are no mirrors in the elegant Victorian they work in. Is she working with a vampire or just a guy with a quirky personality? And….if he is a vampire, is Dru ready to say bite me?
