Book excerpt: A Moment of Prayer May you always overcome every crisis that life throws your way, remembering that you have a God of the entire universe, cheering you on and helping you to navigate the storms of yesterday, today and tomorrow. May you walk in faith having full assurance that your heavenly father is never far from you, but is within you, whispering sweet yet powerful truths, designed not only to confront but to conquer any situation or circumstance, that contradicts the promises that he left on record for you. May you embrace the grace, the mercy, the gifts and many talents that God has poured into you, owning your own beauty and not to seek approval from anyone other than God himself. May you realize the impact that you have on others and the greatness that you trickle on them, understanding that with each interaction they have with you, they are experiencing Gods unconditional and awe-inspiring love. May you accept the divine earthly assignment that God has given to only you, and rejoice in those precious moments of life altering blessings and allow the creator to use you up for his glory and for the levitation of mankind.

From a feeling, [ not from the news ] like a surf wave, powerful or gentle, I flow through the work If it’s a strong feeling, writing is fast. Most times it’s slow, laborious editing. I sometimes make notes. I don’t appreciate modern poetry. This is my own work. I copy no one. I love writing! Several poems are short stories. They contain a variety of windows into the imagination and fantasy. The thoughtful ones may arouse talking points.”

Fleeing communism, they arrived in Texas in May 1960, where the author comes of age. He soon assimilates into America and graduates from high school. Lacking academic direction, he joins the US Navy and falls in love with the rigors, discipline, and culture of military life. After an eight-year enlistment, he earned a commission in the US Army as an Infantry Officer and retired forty-one years later. At his father’s deathbed, the father asked him to pen the memoirs he kept of his long military career, as well as those he kept of his own life in Havana and those of his father, a diplomat for the Republic of Cuba for 36 years. The book thematically chronicles the written narratives of the three men and ends in present-day America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Moments in Executive Coaching examines the change process supported by workplace and executive coaching, making use of empirical evidence from the study of a range of real coaching conversations and coaching relationships. It is both a complete handbook that for the first time gives access to a global qualitative research base in the field of executive coaching, and a look behind the scenes into the practice of both inexperienced and experienced coaches, their clients and their commissioners. Erik de Haan allows the reader access to the wealth of Ashridge empirical research in this field to date, alongside prominent research groups around the world. This book provides practitioners with a range of suggestions for their contracts, backed up by qualitative and narrative research. It looks at what research is already telling us about the value of coaching conversations and the impact of critical ‘moments of change’ in coaching, from the perspectives of coaches, clients, stakeholders and sponsors. The detailed research findings outlined in the book are supplemented throughout by case studies and snapshots of coaching moments as well as practical advice and insights for those working in the field. The book also brings forward innovative new models and concepts for coaches which have emerged from research. Critical Moments in Executive Coaching offers an evidence and research-based approach that will be of great interest to coaches in practice and in training, students of both undergraduate and graduate coaching programmes and those who supervise and commission coaching.

Book excerpt: As the most popular mass spectator sport across the world, soccer generates key moments of significance on and off the field, encapsulated in events that create metaphors and memories, with wider social, cultural, psychological, political, commercial and aesthetic implications. Since its inception as a modern game, the history of soccer has been replete with events that have changed the organization, meanings and impact of the sport. The passage from the club to the nation or from the local to the global often opens up transnational spaces that provide a context for studying the events that have ‘defined’ the sport and its followers. Such defining events can include sporting performances, decisions taken by various stakeholders of the game, accidents and violence among players and fans, and invention of supporter cultures, among other things. The present volume attempts to document, identify and analyse some of the defining events in the history of soccer from interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives. It revisits the discourses of signification and memorialization of such events that have influenced society, culture, politics, religion, and commerce. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Soccer & Society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling authors of Switch and Made to Stick explore why certain brief experiences can jolt us and elevate us and change us—and how we can learn to create such extraordinary moments in our life and work. While human lives are endlessly variable, our most memorable positive moments are dominated by four elements: elevation, insight, pride, and connection. If we embrace these elements, we can conjure more moments that matter. What if a teacher could design a lesson that he knew his students would remember twenty years later? What if a manager knew how to create an experience that would delight customers? What if you had a better sense of how to create memories that matter for your children? This book delves into some fascinating mysteries of experience: Why we tend to remember the best or worst moment of an experience, as well as the last moment, and forget the rest. Why “we feel most comfortable when things are certain, but we feel most alive when they’re not.” And why our most cherished memories are clustered into a brief period during our youth. Readers discover how brief experiences can change lives, such as the experiment in which two strangers meet in a room, and forty-five minutes later, they leave as best friends. (What happens in that time?) Or the tale of the world’s youngest female billionaire, who credits her resilience to something her father asked the family at the dinner table. (What was that simple question?) Many of the defining moments in our lives are the result of accident or luck—but why would we leave our most meaningful, memorable moments to chance when we can create them? The Power of Moments shows us how to be the author of richer experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is filled with opportunities to practice nonviolence. If we kept track, we'd be surprised at how often we get to choose a violent or nonviolent response to a given situation. Seizing these moments is a spiritual practice that shapes a nonviolent heart. Many people doing this together shapes the heart of a nonviolent world. This book is a humble and accessible approach to nonviolence based on the belief that no one is perfectly nonviolent. We are all works in progress. Each chapter presents an imaginative interpretation of a scripture story about seizing a nonviolent moment that sheds new light on nonviolence and its spirituality. Stories of contemporary peacemakers woven throughout offer lessons for living a spirituality of nonviolence for our times. Prophetic words from the US Catholic bishops emphasize the essential role of peacemaking in renewing the earth. Questions following each chapter inspire personal reflection and make the book a welcome resource for classrooms, parishes, and small groups. The more we seize the nonviolent moments in our lives, the more we are transformed by them. And the more we experience the power of nonviolence within ourselves, the more we believe in its potential to transform our troubled world.

Book excerpt: I first started writing about my experiences with my Mothers dementia in a blog, to share some of the lighter moments of living with someone who has dementia and because in many ways it helped me manage the sadness. The tricky part of sharing the moments about my Mother was to continue to honor the woman I knew her to be. She was intelligent and witty with a wonderful, dry, sense of humor. Mom laughed at herself often and would tease others without insult. She was never unkind, enjoyed people and was lovely company. All that changed with her dementia. My family is now dealing with a person we have never known. A stranger to us some moments, only to be our funny and thoughtful Mother the next. To witness the incremental loss of this incredible woman, who gave more in life than I could ever begin to explain, is a heartbreaking tragedy. So I began to write my Moments With Marion to reach out for a connection and to share a story that is so common to millions of people who are suffering along with my family. I hope this book connects with those experiencing the mental decline of a loved one, who bear witness to the mental disappearance of one so dear and the heartbreak of being slowly erased from their mind in the process. There is hope for comfort, if not in the process of sharing, at least in the knowledge that you are not alone.

Defining Markets, Defining Moments explains the author's concept of cohort marketing," an extremely focused approach of generational marketingthat enables managers, salespeople, and marketing specialists to understand and predict a generation's particular attitudes, desires, preferences and buying behaviors -- even when they enter new lifestages. The book outlines the seven generational groups that are currently affecting the marketplace -- and the new ones that are emerging. And it presents new marketing models and practical advice, based on the author's experience with Fortune 500 companies, for tapping the minds, and pocketbooks, of various age groups. The text discusses key physical, socioeconomic, and emotional factors that influence a particular generation's behavior or profile."
