One night, after a barn dance, Cissie is brutally raped by a jealous Johnny Byrnes. Cissie becomes pregnant. Not wanting to keep the baby, the women persuade her to go to London to have an abortion. Cissie succumbs, and she sets of by train to London. Her intention though is to have the baby and give it up for adoption. Molly is born on Christmas Day. After Molly is adopted, she and her new parents immigrate to San Francisco where Molly accidentally signed her soul away to the devil. Will she get it back?

Book excerpt: “What to read after A Court of Thorns and Roses! Full of twists you’ll never see coming!” –UppercaseYA I’ve never been a stranger to the darkness. But when darkness comes knocking and looks that good, who wouldn’t invite him in? Draven is mysterious, evasive, and hot as sin. The only thing more infuriating than his silence is how obnoxious he is every time he does open his mouth. But when a group of strangers attacks me and he fights back—causing them to vanish into a cloud of black dust—I know Draven is more than he seems. Now I know the truth. There’s a veil separating the world I know from a world of demons living all around us. Turns out, good and evil are just words. Some of the demons don’t fall into either category. And I’m realizing just how easily I fit in among the ancient warlocks, the divine soldiers, and the twisted supernaturals... There’s so much more to me and my past that I don’t know—let alone what I am truly capable of. So when all signs point to me having the ability to unleash Hell on earth? I’ll have to decide if I want to do the world a solid and save it...or give it one hell of a makeover. The Ember of Night series is best enjoyed in order. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Depression brought unprecedented changes for American workers and organized labor. As the economy plummeted, employers cut wages and laid off workers, while simultaneously attempting to wrest more work from those who remained employed. In mills, mines, and factories workers organized and resisted, striking for higher wages, improved working conditions, and the right to bargain collectively. As workers walked the picket line or sat down on the shop floor, they could be heard singing. This book examines the songs they sang at three different strikes- the Gastonia, North Carolina, textile mill strike (1929), Harlan County, Kentucky, coal mining strike (1931-32), and Flint, Michigan, automobile sit-down strike (1936-37). Whether in the Carolina Piedmont, the Kentucky hills, or the streets of Michigan, the workers' songs were decidedly class-conscious. All show the workers' understanding of the necessity of solidarity and collective action. In Flint the strikers sang: The trouble in our homestead Was brought about this way When a dashing corporation Had the audacity to say You must all renounce your union And forswear your liberties, And we'll offer you a chance To live and die in slavery. As a shared experience, the singing of songs not only sent the message of collective action but also provided the very means by which the message was communicated and promoted. Singing was a communal experience, whether on picket lines, at union rallies, or on shop floors. By providing the psychological space for striking workers to speak their minds, singing nurtured a sense of community and class consciousness. When strikers retold the events of their strike, as they did in songs, they spread and preserved their common history and further strengthened the bonds among themselves. In the strike songs the roles of gender were pronounced and vivid. Wives and mothers sang out of their concerns for home, family, and children. Men sang in the name of worker loyalty and brotherhood, championing male solidarity and comaraderie. Informed by the new social history, this critical examination of strike songs from three different industries in three different regions gives voice to a group too often deemed as inarticulate. This study, the only book-length examination of this subject, tells history "from the bottom up" and furthers an understanding of worker culture during the tumultuous Depression years.

Book excerpt: Rather than dwell on evil doings, 'A Voyage to Infinity' series seeks to illustrate lifestyles that focus on singular, physical aspects and individual desires in a life. The events and conduct of incarnate souls, whether unwitting or premeditated, builds into a story that goes on to reveal how others' actions might affect the lives of other people around them, and the disadvantages it could mean for the perpetrators in the life beyond. In this second book of the series, 'A Rendezvous with Evil', Vicky and Jamie adhere to a preconceived plan, initiated in the first book, and which is gradually revealed to them by their spiritual guides in this second work. As they grow up, they are drawn together, and become aware of the purpose for their lives on this world. The deeper they get involved with each other, they sense aspects from a previous life that ties them to the Infinite One, and other chosen souls. As proven souls from this previous life, other similar souls begin to home in on them, and together they set about bringing their plan to reality.

Book excerpt: It wasn t a large carcass and surprisingly there was not a lot of blood. The head had been severed and placed upon a wooden table. Each limb of the carcass was crudely hacked off with an axe and saw until only the torso remained. This was no experienced butcher, even his tools were rusty and had been used for chopping wood. The axe and saw were not meant to be used in this way. This also was no abattoir or butcher s shop, the heinous act was taking place in the kitchen of a country cottage and the carcass was not one of a beast, it was the body of a human being.

Book excerpt: In this third title in the Father Gabriel Mystery series, the detective priest is less than pleased to find himself the reluctant guest at a wealthy local family's Christmas party. Only the excellent – and probably black market – food softens the horror of meeting the odious Victor Gladstone, a veteran reporter, an ardent anti-clerical and the only witness to a wartime massacre no one wishes to hear about. When Victor is found dead on the Martin estate the next morning, the apparent victim of an unfortunate accident, Gabriel is drawn into the mystery of who among the family's chattering guests could have wanted the old man dead. Gabriel quickly realizes that Victor Gladstone, like any good reporter, had a nose for rotten behavior, but as Gabriel's investigation moves towards its tragic conclusion, he faces the not one but two serious questions: Who is guilty of Gladstone's murder? and Is anyone truly innocent? This mystery focuses on the issue of indirect involvement in evil, particularly buying and selling property stolen from victims of the Nazis and witnessing Nazi crimes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When rock ’n’ roll emerged in the 1950s, ministers denounced it from their pulpits and Sunday school teachers warned of the music’s demonic origins. The big beat, said Billy Graham, was “ever working in the world for evil.” Yet by the early 2000s Christian rock had become a billion-dollar industry. The Devil’s Music tells the story of this transformation. Rock’s origins lie in part with the energetic Southern Pentecostal churches where Elvis, Little Richard, James Brown, and other pioneers of the genre worshipped as children. Randall J. Stephens shows that the music, styles, and ideas of tongue-speaking churches powerfully influenced these early performers. As rock ’n’ roll’s popularity grew, white preachers tried to distance their flock from this “blasphemous jungle music,” with little success. By the 1960s, Christian leaders feared the Beatles really were more popular than Jesus, as John Lennon claimed. Stephens argues that in the early days of rock ’n’ roll, faith served as a vehicle for whites’ racial fears. A decade later, evangelical Christians were at odds with the counterculture and the antiwar movement. By associating the music of blacks and hippies with godlessness, believers used their faith to justify racism and conservative politics. But in a reversal of strategy in the early 1970s, the same evangelicals embraced Christian rock as a way to express Jesus’s message within their own religious community and project it into a secular world. In Stephens’s compelling narrative, the result was a powerful fusion of conservatism and popular culture whose effects are still felt today.
