Book excerpt: Molly is a little mouse who lives with her parents on Mr. Johnson's farm. When Molly's parents go out to look for food for the upcoming winter, Molly decides to venture out of her mouse hole to find a friend to play with. Molly hopes to find a friend, amongst the other animals who live on the farm with her, but is so disappointed when they are all to busy with their chores to play with a little mouse. The pig has to eat his slop; the chickens sit impatiently to lay their eggs, the tired old horse needs to plow the field, and lastly, the cow has to be milked. When sad, little Molly returns home crying, her parents decide to talk with the farm animals. Each animal visits Molly later that evening and plays with her in their own special way. The pig lets her play with his curly tail, the chicken reads a story to her, the horse give her a ride around the barn and the cow gives her a drink of fresh milk. At the end of the evening, Molly has made many new friends and realized how lucky she is. Follow Molly on her adventure as she travels around Mr. Johnson's farm looking for a friend to play with.

Book excerpt: The Newbery Award-winning author of Up a Road Slowly presents the unforgettable story of Jethro Creighton—a brave boy who comes of age during the turbulent years of the Civil War. In 1861, America is on the cusp of war, and young Jethro Creighton is just nine-years-old. His brother, Tom, and his cousin, Eb, are both of fighting age. As Jethro's family is pulled into the conflict between the North and the South, loyalties are divided, dreams are threatened, and their bonds are put to the test in this heart-wrenching, coming of age story. “Drawing from family records and from stories told by her grandfather, the author has, in an uncommonly fine narrative, created living characters and vividly reconstructed a crucial period of history.”—Booklist
