Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report reviews experimental studies of gas-surface scattering reported in the period from approximately 1969 through the first half of 1972. It emphasizes rare gas scattering from a variety of metal single crystals at incident energies from about 0.025 eV to nearly 20 eV, and includes a discussion of the various scattering regimes in that energy range. In addition, light gas scattering from LiF and certain highly structured metal surfaces is surveyed. The observation of single-phonon inelastic events are described. Recent studies of desorption phenomena are reviewed. A correlation of the various results is made and areas in which questions remain are indicated. Apart from parametric correlations, no attempt is made to assess the validity of the various theoretical models that have been developed to describe the scattering process. (Author).

Book excerpt: From proceedings of the International Summer Institute in surface science; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA (28 Aug 1973). Molecular beam - surface scattering experiments, the nature of elastic and inelastic scattering, and the information obtained from detection of the angular distribution and kinetic energy of the scattered particles are described. The types of energy exchange that take place between a gas atom or molecule and the surface atoms and the theories that have been developed to explain some of these energy transfer processes are discussed. Finally the results of some experiments are reviewed, and directions for future research are pointed out. (JFP).

Book excerpt: The paper deals with the problem of the scattering of a molecular beam normally incident on a solid surface. By means of a suitable interaction model which takes into account the thermal motion of the surface atoms and the surface roughness at molecular scale 'the velocity distribution function of the free-molecule surface source' formed by the re-emitted molecules is determined. Successively the corresponding spatial distribution functions of the number of molecules, of their momentum and of their energy are calculated. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamics of Gas-Surface Scattering deals with the dynamics of scattering as inferred from known properties of gases and solids. This book discusses measurements of spatial distributions of scattered atomic and molecular streams, and of the energy and momentum which gas particles exchange at solid surfaces. It also considers two regimes of scattering, both of which are associated with a lower range of incident gas energies: the thermal and structure scattering regimes. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book opens with a brief historical overview of the early experiments that investigated the dynamics of scattering of gases by surfaces. The discussion then turns to some elements of the kinetic theory of gases; intermodular potentials and interaction regimes; and classical-mechanical lattice models used in gas-surface scattering theory. The applications of molecular beams to the study of gas-surface scattering phenomena are also described. The remaining chapters focus on experiments and theories on scattering of molecular streams by surfaces of solids, with emphasis on thermal and structure regimes of inelastic scattering; quantum theory of gas-surface scattering; and quantum mechanical scattering phenomena. This text concludes with an analysis of energy exchange processes that may occur when a solid surface is completely immersed in a still gas. This monograph will be a valuable resource for students and practitioners of physics, chemistry, and applied mathematics.

Book excerpt: The present paper deals with the problem of the surface interaction between a rigid surface and a molecular beam normally incident on it. The interaction model is here generalized by introducing a suitable energy parameter which simulates the effect of the dissipative forces acting during the collisions between the surface atoms and the incident molecules. Then, the normal pressures and the total translation energies of all the scattered molecules, as well as the corresponding accommodation coefficients, are calculated. Then, a similarity rule between the above mentioned pressures and energies is deduced. At last, the obtained theoretical results are compared with the experimental ones deduced by Stickney and Hurlbut. (Author).

Book excerpt: Our experimental studies are directed at elucidating the mechanisms of interfacial adsorption, desorption, and reactions in collisions between chemical warfare simulants and solid surfaces. The investigations are facilitated by using molecular beam scattering from well characterized, MgO surfaces and model self-assembled monolayer or multilayer surfaces. Much of our efforts for this funding period have been focused on constructing a state-of-the-art ultrahigh vacuum gas-dosing instrument, synthesizing new MgO nano-structured materials, and exploring uptake in new silicon-oxide thin films. The instrument is now complete and enabling us to measure gas-surface reaction probabilities and branching ratios, determine surface adsorbate concentrations and structures, and measure the residence times and bonding energies of molecules on or within a material.

Book excerpt: Molecular beam scattering of light gases from in-situ cleaved alkali halide surfaces has been studied as a means of developing molecular beam scattering as a surface characterization tool and as a means of obtaining information about the gas atom-solid surface potential interaction. For 4He scattering from LiF carried out under improved resolution the main results are as follows: There are four bound states in the surface potential well; most of the structure previously designated as 'fine structure' is due either to transitions to these four levels; the transitions involving the (01) and (0,-1) reciprocal lattice vectors are strong; the widths of the lines are consistent with the velocity distribution; and the observed energies agree fairly well with those calculated by Tsuchida. It has been shown in this study that molecular beam scattering is a valuable tool in the characterization of gas atom-surface potentials.

Book excerpt: Elementary Processes in Excitations and Reactions on Solid Surfaces explores the fundamental nature of dynamics on solid surfaces. Attempts are made to reveal various aspects of elementary processes in excitations and reactions on solid surfaces by recent theoretical and experimental developments of the subjects such as molecular beams interacting with surfaces, ion beam scattering, laser-induced dynamical processes, electronically induced dynamical processes, and optical properties of solid surfaces. This volume is devided into three parts. Part I is concerned mainly with the rich reaction dynamics on potential-energy surfaces. Part II is devoted to the interplay of excitations. In Part III, new and rapidly developing methods are introduced.
