Book excerpt: "I am reciting this experience for your benefit, because my success in body growth has always been looked upon as an interesting and phenomenal experience. These facts will also give you courage to keep striving because it is a well established fact that a man who has acquired great muscular proportions and strength for his height will find it more difficult to increase body growth. The peculiar part is, no other teacher has been able to advance any new training methods to take care of the legs. In other words, little has been added to what was known about leg build- ing years ago. You would be amazed if you could see the lower limb development of 99% of physical training teachers-their lower limb development is so poor. Bearing all this in mind I believe when you have finished reading this treatise you will be well satisfied that you have learned something entirely new in leg building and something that will enable you to get busy and get bigger and better legs." -George F. Jowett This is a restored and re-formatted edition of Jowetts's original 1931 booklet. The text remains exactly as written in 1931. A must have in your collection. Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book excerpt: An insightful monograph highlighting the illustrious design of master architect William Hefner - lavishly illustrated and richly detailed - an intimate tour of some of the world's most opulent houses. This latest addition to IMAGES' Master Architect Series showcases seven exquisite residential projects by master architect William Hefner, whose Los-Angeles-based architectural firm has been designing residential, commercial and retail properties for nearly two decades. Although varied in style, each house featured shares the timeless elegance and attention to detail common to all of Hefner's creations. They are each marked also by Hefner's appreciation of the craft of building and the use of natural materials. Opulent and richly detailed, the interiors nevertheless retain a sense of intimacy, warmth and comfort. Hefner's houses are luxurious, but it is a personal, liveable form of luxury that embraces rather than distances. William Hefner's passion lies in residential architecture; his expertise encompasses a vast array of styles from the highly contemporary to the deeply historic. Through this crossover he has realised that each style has benefitted from knowledge of the other - modern houses are richer in materials, more complex in their details, and thusly more comfortable to its inhabitants; historic projects are less fussy, more tailored, resulting in spaces better suited to the needs and tendencies of contemporary life. William's expertise in architecture and deep appreciation for interior design and landscape often culminates in the three merging seamlessly - environments emerge which embrace outdoor views animated by an ever-shifting play of natural light; the rooms connect organically to the furnishings within them. By combining these three disciplines within his firm, he is able to ensure that each distinct design concept integrates with one another and that the vision of the homeowner is expressed in every aspect of the work. William earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History in 1977 from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, which included a year of study in Greece. He went on to receive a Master's of Architecture from UCLA, during the influential Charles Moore's tenure. 400 col.

She needs the inspiration to find God in the mess and the mundane that often defines her. She craves the solitude of a moment with the Master to quiet the storms. She needs to laugh and remember why she loves being a mom. Don't Make Me Come Up There! is filled with inspirational and hilarious true-life stories and reflections written by a very human mom. Moms will recognize themselves in the pages of this book written for real, everyday mothers who know what it’s like to catch vomit with one hand while starting a load of laundry with the other (and never confusing the two!). The fifty-two reflections encourage moms to revel in the everyday beauty of their lives and grow closer to God through it all. "I couldn’t help thinking of the last time my children had scattered up the stairs and disappeared into a quiet abyss. Initially, I thought they were just delighting in one another’s company, holding hands, and making paper daisies. But that thought lasted for 1.2 seconds before I snapped out of my delusion only to discover my oldest giving her brother a “haircut” and my youngest smearing soap all over the bathroom. . . A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: "EVERY day as I grow older I believe more than ever that the impressions created in our youth form an indelible mark upon our minds. Throughout the years dating from my boyhood into manhood, I have always looked upon the arm as the indicator of a man's physical strength and ability. While I know it is only one of the many parts that go to make up a perfect body, on the other hand what use is a strong body without a pair of equally powerful arms? Just as much use as a derrick with a weak hoist. It is no use talking. I am just as much impressed today with a strongly built arm as ever I was in my imaginative youth. It is the first thing that catches the eye. I can recall quite vividly the old smithy shop where I used to watch the blacksmith pound iron on the anvil. He looked for all the world like the subject used to illustrate Longfellow's The Village Blacksmith."- George F. Jowett This is a restored and re-formatted edition of Jowetts's original 1938 booklet. She helps her mom out with her hair salon, she goes to school, and she envies her perfect older sister. But everything changes when Leonard arrives. Leonard is an orphan, a cousin who Phoebe never knew she had. When he comes to live with Phoebe’s family, he upsets the delicate balance of their lives. He’s gay and confident about who he is. He inspires the people around him. He sees people not as they are, but as they hope to be. One day, Leonard goes missing. Phoebe, her family, and her community fight to understand what happened, and to make sense of why someone might want to extinguish the beautiful absolute brightness that was Leonard Pelkey. This novel by James Lecesne, the cofounder of The Trevor Project, inspired the critically-acclaimed Off-Broadway show The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey. A William C. Morris Debut Award Finalist “This book will encourage you to be exactly who you are.” —Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues

An adulterous couple stepping over the line where the initial excitement ends and the pain begins. A widow visiting a Scottish village in search of her husband’s past—and instead discovering unsetting truths about a total stranger. The miraculously accomplished stories in this collection not only astonish and delight, but also convey the unspoken mysteries at the heart of all human experience. The mastery—the almost numinous ability to say the unsayable—makes Friend of My Youth a genuine literary event.

But when he is presented with a mysterious legacy, he is forced to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

Book excerpt: Discover classic and contemporary Scandinavian style with specially commissioned photography of homes in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Discover classic and contemporary Scandinavian style with specially commissioned photography of homes in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Scandinavia is famous for its distinctive style: homes are pared-back and simple, and form and function are combined to create aesthetically pleasing and practical interiors. Scandinavians are inspired by light, having an abundance of it in summer but so little of it in winter, and house designs tend to maximize the amount of natural light that enters the home, and allow the inhabitants to make the most of outdoor life during the summer. Similarly, nature and the weather are major influences: homes are made warm and cozy for the freezing winter months—not just literally with log burners, but also through incorporating wood and natural materials. Here Niki Brantmark, owner of the interior design blog My Scandinavian Home, presents a wide-ranging collection of these beautiful homes and explores how the Scandinavian lifestyle is reflected in them all. The first chapter, Urban Living, features styles ranging from minimalist to bohemian, and pale palettes to dramatic dark colors. By contrast, the Country Homes tend to have a softer, calmer feel, through color and textiles, in line with a slower pace of life. Finally, the spectacular Rural Retreats include a mountain cabin, beach house, and rustic summer cottage, and demonstrate how having somewhere to escape to is so important to many Scandinavians. This collection of stunning interiors will put Scandi style within every reader’s reach.

Book excerpt: “When we believe the Bible as it is, we will see the power of God move in our lives and in our community as it did centuries ago in Bible times.” -Mel Tari Translated into dozens of languages, with millions of copies sold, Like a Mighty Wind remains a beloved classic from global evangelist Mel Tari. Recounting the incredible story of revival on the island of Timor during 1965 in the midst of political turmoil, the book is an amazing testament to the power of faith and the reality of God's power to work miracles in modern times. The Spirit of God that swept across the island “like a mighty wind” continues today throughout Indonesia although persecution of Christians is all too common. The story of God's powerful revival in this region remains a testament to the truth of God's Word, and serves as a reminder to all believers that the Spirit of God manifests in our world now as it did in the earliest days of the Church.
