It discusses MC when the ISI is known at both transmitter and receiver, and when only the receiver knows the ISI. It showcases polynomial antiquity resistant modulated coding, and provides an examination of transmitter-assisted ISI equalization.

The main achievements include the systematic study of modulated codes that are convolutional codes defined on real/complex field over intersymbol interference, multipath, jamming channels. We obtained the joint maximum-likelihood decoding, and the MMSE-DFE decoding algorithms. We proved the existence of the coding gain compared to the uncoded AWGN channel. We also obtained space-time modulated codes for multiple transmit and multiple receive antenna systems. A new precoded OFDM system was also obtained which is robust to spectral-nulls.

Book excerpt: The high level of technical detail included in standards specifications can make it difficult to find the correlation between the standard specifications and the theoretical results. This book aims to cover both of these elements to give accessible information and support to readers. It explains the current and future trends on communication theory and shows how these developments are implemented in contemporary wireless communication standards. Examining modulation, coding and multiple access techniques, the book is divided into two major sections to cover these functions. The two-stage approach first treats the basics of modulation and coding theory before highlighting how these concepts are defined and implemented in modern wireless communication systems. Part 1 is devoted to the presentation of main L1 procedures and methods including modulation, coding, channel equalization and multiple access techniques. In Part 2, the uses of these procedures and methods in the wide range of wireless communication standards including WLAN, WiMax, WCDMA, HSPA, LTE and cdma2000 are considered. An essential study of the implementation of modulation and coding techniques in modern standards of wireless communication Bridges the gap between the modulation coding theory and the wireless communications standards material Divided into two parts to systematically tackle the topic - the first part develops techniques which are then applied and tailored to real world systems in the second part Covers special aspects of coding theory and how these can be effectively applied to improve the performance of wireless communications systems

Book excerpt: Coding and Modulation for Digital Television presents a comprehensive description of all error control coding and digital modulation techniques used in Digital Television (DTV). This book illustrates the relevant elements from the expansive theory of channel coding to how the transmission environment dictates the choice of error control coding and digital modulation schemes. These elements are presented in such a way that both the `mathematical integrity' and `understanding for engineers' are combined in a complete form and supported by a number of practical examples. In addition, the book contains descriptions of the existing standards and provides a valuable source of corresponding references. Coding and Modulation for Digital Television also features a description of the latest techniques, providing the reader with a glimpse of future digital broadcasting. These include the concepts of soft-in-soft-out decoding, turbo-coding and cross-correlated quadrature modulation, all of which will have a prominent future in improving efficiency of the next generation DTV systems. Coding and Modulation for Digital Television is essential reading for all undergraduate and postgraduate students, broadcasting and communication engineers, researchers, marketing managers, regulatory bodies, governmental organizations and standardization institutions of the digital television industry.

Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive and easy-to-read discussion of joint source-channel encoding and decoding for source signals with continuous amplitudes. It is a state-of-the-art presentation of this exciting, thriving field of research, making pioneering contributions to the new concept of source-adaptive modulation. The book starts with the basic theory and the motivation for a joint realization of source and channel coding. Specialized chapters deal with practically relevant scenarios such as iterative source-channel decoding and its optimization for a given encoder, and also improved encoder designs by channel-adaptive quantization or source-adaptive modulation. Although Information Theory is not the main topic of the book OCo in fact, the concept of joint source-channel coding is contradictory to the classical system design motivated by a questionable practical interpretation of the separation theorem OCo this theory still provides the ultimate performance limits for any practical system, whether it uses joint source-channel coding or not. Therefore, the theoretical limits are presented in a self-contained appendix, which is a useful reference also for those not directly interested in the main topic of this book. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (98 KB). Contents: Joint Source-Channel Coding: An Overview; Joint Source-Channel Decoding; Channel-Adaptive Scaled Vector Quantization; Index Assignments for Multiple Descriptions Vector Quantizers; Source-Adaptive Modulation; Source-Adaptive Power Allocation; Appendices: Theoretical Performance Limits; Optimal Decoder for a Given Encoder; Symbol Error Probabilities for M-PSK; Derivative of the Expected Distortion for SAM. Readership: Students at advanced undergraduate and graduate level; practitioners and academics in Electrical and Communications Engineering, Information Technology and Computer Science."

This book was released on 1978 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between the structure of line codes and the error probability for baseband PCM systems with intersymbol interference is studied for a broad class of finite-state-machine codes. The model for a repeatered transmission line is reduced to a digital model including the line encoder, linear dispersive digital channel, additive Gaussian noise, and a fixed threshold detector. The error probability for a first order channel model (exponential response) is then found numerically using the Gram-Charlier series representation for the Gaussian noise probability density function. In order to accomplish this computation, the moments of the intersymbol interference are derived for this channel model via a property of the encoded channel sequence statistics. The error probability results are used to show tha a simple approximation for channels which cause appreciable intersymbol interference over a span of many symbols (for example, more than fifty) provides accurate results. This approximation demonstrates the multimodal nature of the probability density of intersymbol interference, and suggests a new method of Decision feedback Equalization which removes most of the deleterious effects of the intersymbol interference on the error probability. It is also shown that the error propagation which is inherent in Decision Feedback Equalizers can be effectively controlled with this new equalizer.
