Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern German Music, Vol. 2 of 2: Recollections and Criticisms The above is a solid, if not a very genial, tribute to Hummel the pianist; but I must think, that from philosophers so far-sighted, and from musicians so catholic, he still might have claimed fairer construction and kinder allowance. Though he had not beautiful Polish eyes, he was still a notable composer; though he was like a vessel of the worst material, he had more than the mere Pandora's gift of interpreta tion he commanded the individual force, fire - most of all, fancy - of a poet capable of ex tempore utterance. Book excerpt: Henry Fothergill Chorley was music critic of The Athenaeum for over thirty years, and published several books on the state of contemporary European music, including Music and Manners in France and Germany (1841) and Thirty Years' Musical Recollections (1862), both reissued in this series. In the two-volume Modern German Music, published in 1854, he revisits many of the topics and places discussed in the 1841 volume, but views them from the other side of the Year of Revolution, 1848, which, he argues, changed the cultural as well as the political atmosphere of the German states significantly and permanently. Lively descriptions of German cities, their culture and especially their music festivals are accompanied by extended essays on Spohr, Beethoven, Schubert and Mendelssohn, but Chorley is by no means an uncritical observer, and his comments on the rise of nationalism and militarism in the German states after 1848 now seem prophetic.

Book excerpt: The story of the phenomenon that is Kraftwerk, and how they revolutionised our cultural landscape 'We are not artists nor musicians. We are workers.' Ignoring nearly all rock traditions, expermenting in near-total secrecy in their Düsseldorf studio, Kraftwerk fused sound and technology, graphic design and performance, modernist Bauhaus aesthetics and Rhineland industrialisation - even human and machine - to change the course of modern music. This is the story of Kraftwerk the cultural phenomenon, who turned electronic music into avant-garde concept art and created the soundtrack to our digital age.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern German Music, Vol. 1 of 2: Recollections and Criticisms Indeed, I suspect that those who limit their labours to a consideration of musical effects, will generally find this same instinct (not to call it prompt judgment) a safer guide than many dare admit. It is impossible to know a work thoroughly on a first hearing - on a first intercourse with an artist to perceive the extent of his merits: but unless the work produce from the first a quick desire for better acquaint ance - unless the artist at first displays some attribute or accomplishment that attracts-it may be only a damage done to taste, and a loss of time, on subsequent occasions to attempt to find beauty where none suggested itself - or charm in that which failed to charm originally. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first annotated bibliography, in German or English, to gather the rich sources for German-language folk-music scholarship. It presents a comprehensive view of both historical and contemporary trends in a field embracing folkloristics and ethnomusicology, as well as philological and cultural studies. Beginning with early theories of folk song-formulated by Herder, Goethe, the Brothers Grimm, and others-the book examines the most important collections of the 19th-century folk-song movement, and surveys the 20th-century institutions and publications that have made folk-music scholarship essential to an understanding of German-speaking Europe. The book represents the enormous diversity of folk music. Ideas of genre and classification contrast with the ways in which minority and ethnic groups have contributed to the complex constructs of 19th- and 20th-century nationalism. The intellectual history in this book often takes the form of a clash between institutions and the forceful personalities of scholars who theorized that folk music was the product of individuals or the linguistic core of nations. Entries that illustrate the ways in which constructs of folk music have contributed to the politics of culture (e.g., in Nazi Germany or in the workers' culture of the former German Democratic Republic) also constitute the expansive musical landscape covered by this book The author includes diverse disciplinary perspectives, not just those of folklorists, but also concepts from ethnomusicology, historical musicology, and religious and cultural studies. In addition to traditional studies of the canons of German folk music (e.g., ballads and singing-society repertories), Bohlman includes studies of religious and ethnic minorities, and of German folk music in nations and regions outside Central Europe. The comprehensive nature of this book, not only makes available a rich history of scholarship, but also contextualizes Central European folk music as a vital and critical discipline for the interpretation of a changing Europe. Includes index.
