Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters of French Music The reader who turns to these pages with the idea of finding therein a large and exhaustive account of the composers mentioned, with a technical analysis of their works, will, I fear, be disappointed. My intention has been a far more modest one. The dimensions of this volume would not have allowed me to devote that amount of space to each composer that might be considered due to his merits. The object I have had in view has been to give an account of their lives and to draw attention to the tendencies exhibited in their works. Jean-aubry can thus in no sense be regarded as animated by chauvinism. He is a resolute champion of the free exchange of artistic ideas between all nations, believing that therein lies the surest protection against intellectual domination by any one of them. He is the enemy of all exclusiveness, and has played an active part in arousing the curiosity of his own countrymen in the artistic life of other nations. His book on modern French music represents an accumulation from several years of missionary work. It is far from complete, but he has preferred to place it on record in its present form, the only addition made since the outbreak of war being the first chapter, for which there was an actual need. The appearance of the volume early in the war was due partly to considerations arising out of the war itself, and partly to a very natural desire, with which I have good reason to sympathise, to show that his interest in French music is not of yesterday. Since August, 1914, so many who were hitherto apathetic or even hostile have suddenly declared themselves enthusiastic, that it is really necessary to make some distinction between pioneers and these converts of the eleventh hour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern French Masters HE source of art is the fountain of Love: the T winged spirits, Painting, Sculpture, and Poetry, spring from it hand in hand. With affectionate leave takings and cries of joy at their liberation, they soar into space, the angel of Music out-winging the rest because of more lambent fibre, but She is no more vital nor pulsating than her sisters. Genius is Love, Talent is the sure perception of essentials combined with the power of expression. Talent, coupled With genius, produces the love-child that men call a Masterpiece. State of weakness, it will be no remedy to set before it some sort of theoretical or abstract model of itself to which it must studiously conform. It will be far better to bring back to it the contact and sentiment of the works that it created in happier times when it enjoyed the plenitude and lively vigour of its strength. Nothing could be better calculated to renew its lost or wearied vital energy, to kindle again the flame of its activity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music and the Romantic Movement in France The study of the evolution of art and music in connection with contemporary social and political conditions has been urged on the ground that an understanding of the general life of any period is necessary to a svmpathetic understanding of the artistic production of that period. Some argue, on the other hand, that the study of art is, in fact, a study of the history of man and that it illuminates the study of history rather than vice versa. The truth is that, in studying either art or history. Certain general causes appear which in uence the development of both artistic and political ideas. Whatever we learn about these fundamental causes - whether in art or history - the knowledge we gain can always be helpful in unravelling any problems of art-development or of history that we try to solve. For the general underlying causes behind the changes which came at the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries, I have drawn freely, in the present essay, upon various authorities. I am largely indebted to Professor Irving Babbitt of Harvard University, whose lectures have provided the main stimulus for the present study and whose book Rousseau and Romanticism (houghton and Mif in, Boston, 1919) is a definitive exposition of the many phases of the romantic point of view. My effort has been, after giving the reader a brief description of the intellectual background of the romantic period, to set against this background the prominent figures in the niusical life of France, with the double object, first, of placing each composer in the light which the understanding of the background throws on his work, and, second, of showing what each contributed to the main current of romanticism.
