Book excerpt: From 1941-1945, through the entire storm of World War Two, Military Comics both informed and entertained the youth (and adults) of America, with stories of the Army and the Navy, and more. Featuring some of the best talents of the day, such as Will Eisner and Reed Crandall, and one of the most popular comic titles in history, Blackhawk, Military Comics remains one of the most sought after golden age titles in history. Once the war ended the name was changed to MODERN COMICS, but the characters and the creativity stayed. Instead of fighting the Nazis or other foes, Blackhawk and his team became soldiers of fortune; Dogtag continued to make us laugh; Choo-Choo and Ezra still messed up in style --- and the series moved forward! We're publishing them all! In Summer 2015 you will find all 102 individual issues of Military/Modern Comics - - - OR you can find them all in the 34-Volume Collection, "The Complete Military/Modern Comics" - - - OR, if you're a Blackhawk fan, we're offering all 102+ Blackhawk stories from Military/Modern Comics in four giant volumes, "Blackhawk: Classic Comics Library #32, #64, #70 & #80!" Plus you can find many other characters --- Death Patrol, PT Boat, Ezra, Choo Choo and others --- in their own collections! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more people are noticing links between urban geography and the spaces within the layout of panels on the comics page. Benjamin Fraser explores the representation of the city in a range of comics from across the globe. Comics address the city as an idea, a historical fact, a social construction, a material-built environment, a shared space forged from the collective imagination, or as a social arena navigated according to personal desire. Accordingly, Fraser brings insights from urban theory to bear on specific comics. The works selected comprise a variety of international, alternative, and independent small-press comics artists, from engravings and early comics to single-panel work, graphic novels, manga, and trading cards, by artists such as Will Eisner, Tsutomu Nihei, Hariton Pushwagner, Julie Doucet, Frans Masereel, and Chris Ware. In the first monograph on this subject, Fraser touches on many themes of modern urban life: activism, alienation, consumerism, flânerie, gentrification, the mystery story, science fiction, sexual orientation, and working-class labor. He leads readers to images of such cities as Barcelona, Buenos Aires, London, Lyon, Madrid, Montevideo, Montreal, New York, Oslo, Paris, São Paolo, and Tokyo. Through close readings, each chapter introduces readers to specific comics artists and works and investigates a range of topics related to the medium’s spatial form, stylistic variation, and cultural prominence. Mainly, Fraser mixes interest in urbanism and architecture with the creative strategies that comics artists employ to bring their urban images to life.

Book excerpt: Torchy is a comic strip and, primarily, a series of comic books featuring the ingenue Torchy Todd, created by the American "good girl art" cartoonist Bill Ward during 1944. The character was ranked 97th of the 2011 Comics Buyer's Guide's "100 Sexiest Women in Comics" list. After Bill Ward's drafting into the World War II military, the artist created the tall, blond, busty ingenue Torchy Todd for the base newspaper of Brooklyn's Fort Hamilton, where Ward was deployed. The comic strip in which she featured soon became syndicated to other Army newspapers worldwide. Torchy made her comic-book debut as main character of a backup feature of Quality Comics' Doll Man #8 (Spring 1946). Her feature was later published in all but two issues through #30 (September 1950), resuming in #35 (August 1951) through #47 (October 1953), as well as in Modern Comics #53–102 (Sept. 1946 – Oct. 1950). A solo series, Torchy, had six issues (Nov. 1949 – Sept. 1950), some with art by Gill Fox. Several Torchy stories, including some Fort Hamilton comic strips, were reprinted in Innovation Comics' 100-page, squarebound trade paperback Bill Ward's Torchy, The Blonde Bombshell #1 (Jan. 1992). Others have been reprinted in The Betty Pages #1 (1987); AC Comics anthology Good Girl Art Quarterly #1 (Summer 1990), #10 (Fall 1992), #11 (Winter 1993), and #14 (Winter 1994), and in AC's America's Greatest Comics #5 (circa 2003). Comic Images released a set of Torchy trading cards in 1994. Ward drew an original cover featuring Torchy for Robert M. Overstreet's annual book The Comic Book Price Guide (#8, 1978). Torchy Todd is a ditsy but goodhearted young blond woman who frequently finds herself in humorous, mildly risqué encounters with lustful men. Featuring the Good Girl Art of Bill Ward! The_Complete_Torchy feature from Quality's Modern Comics, Doll Man and Torchy Comics between September 1946 and October 1953. Torchy stories are from Doll Man #8, 9, 11, 12, 14-30, 35, 37; Modern Comics #53-102, Torchy Comics #1-6.
