Book excerpt: Burmese Days is George Orwell's first novel, originally published in 1934. Set in British Burma during the waning days of the British empire, when Burma was ruled from Delhi as part of British India, the novel serves as a portrait of the dark side of the British Raj. At the center of the novel is John Flory, trapped within a bigger system that is undermining the better side of human nature. The novel deals with indigenous corruption and imperial bigotry in a society where natives peoples were viewed as interesting, but ultimately inferior. Includes a bibliography and brief bio of the author.

Book excerpt: Over the course of his career, George Orwell wrote about many things, but no matter what he wrote the goal was to get at the fundamental truths of the world. He had no place for dissemblers, liars, conmen, or frauds, and he made his feelings well-known. In Orwell on Truth, excerpts from across Orwell’s career show how his writing and worldview developed over the decades, profoundly shaped by his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, and further by World War II and the rise of totalitarian states. In a world that seems increasingly like one of Orwell’s dystopias, a willingness to speak truth to power is more important than ever. With Orwell on Truth, readers get a collection of both powerful quotes and the context for them.

Book excerpt: 'It is the history of a revolution that went wrong-and of the excellent excuses that were forthcoming at every step for the perversion of the original doctrine,' wrote George Orwell for the first edition of ANIMAL FARM in 1945. His simple and tragicfable, telling of what happens when the animals drive out Mr Jones and attempt to run the farm themselves, has since become a world-famous classic of English prose. 'Surely the most important fictional satire to be written in twentieth-century Britain' Malcolm Bradbury

Book excerpt: Books are amongst the most personal of gifts. The book we choose to give a loved one is informed by our intimate knowledge of their personal histories and their tastes. Often, when we gift books, we love to explain the meaning behind our present by writing an inscription within its pages. Ordinarily, we hope the gift and its message will be enjoyed, placed lovingly on its new owner's bookshelf and treasured forever. This is not always the case, though ... W B Gooderham is fascinated by second-hand books and curates a growing collection of those featuring intriguing inscriptions. The messages he finds range from the awkward scratchings of adolescent infatuation, to the resentful recriminations of a love affair gone sour and offer illuminating glimpses into their books' own secret histories. This beautifully presented book will feature the very best from the author's collection of dedications alongside the covers of the works in which they were found. From Animal Farm to Pride and Prejudice, there's something here to please every book lover's taste.

Book excerpt: Parents – the godless anti-Bible Veejack religion is using the public schools and government funding to train our children, family, and friends to reject our Judeo-Christian values and beliefs. For the past forty years Judeo-Christians have endured relentless assaults by news reporters, talk shows, politicians, academics and educators, media influencers, and performing artists. The assault targets Judeo-Christian faiths by focusing on the negative, inflammatory, and predatory behaviors and activities of a minority of individuals in leadership positions. These incidents are widely circulated by the anti-Judeo-Christian forces in attempts to demean the faiths and influence people to believe the whole Judeo-Christian model is corrupt and should be abolished. Realization that there is an external force targeting and tarnishing the Judeo-Christian faiths fosters a secondary realization. The external force attempting to destroy Judeo-Christian faiths is actually a nontheistic, often hedonistic and self-destructive competing religion that dares not publicly announce its existence. The media purposely ignores the significantly beneficial Judeo-Christian activities that occur every day across the United States. Judeo-Christian activities such as molding moral behavior in youths; educating oppressed and impoverished people; providing free food, shelter, and health care to the indigent; providing counseling; visiting the sick, infirm and elderly and those in hospice care; assisting addicts to regain their freedom by helping them to eliminate dependence on addictive substances; and calming gang violence. These, and a host of other unheralded and unreported positive Judeo-Christian activities are ignored by the propagandists of the new religion. The new religion and its media influencers portray the Judeo-Christian faiths in the worst light possible. The new religion’s politicians legislate its religious beliefs into law. The new religion’s clerics, functioning as journalists, or researchers, or academics, or broadcast personalities paint a slanted, negative, one-sided portrait of Judeo-Christian faiths and praise the tenets of the new religion.

Download or read book Filming Literature written by Neil Sinyard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive survey of the relationship between film and literature. It looks at the cinematic adaptations of such literary masters as Shakespeare, Henry James, Joseph Conrad and D.H. Lawrence, and considers the contribution to the cinema made by important literary figures as Harold Pinter, James Agree and Graham Greene. Elsewhere, the book draws intriguing analogies between certain literary and film artists, such as Dickens and Chaplin, Ford and Twain, and suggests that such analogies can throw fresh light on the subjects under review. Another chapter considers the film genre of the bio-pic, the numerous cinematic attempts to render in concrete terms the complexities of the literary life, whether the writer be Proust, Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Dashiel Hammett, Agatha Christie or Boris Pasternak. Originally published in 1986, this is a book to appeal to any reader with an interest in film or literature, and is of especial value to those involved in the teaching or study of either subject.
