Book excerpt: The Book Block is a manual of industrial binding techniques, the first in the Making a Book collection, which focuses on manuals for graphic book production. With the aim of elevating knowledge about graphic production among designers — helping them to produce better books and communicate more effectively with all those involved in the process — The Book Block brings together the 17 most common industrial binding techniques in 6 categories, exploring each one in detail, describing them and showing what is possible to do in this day and age. Conceived from scratch to be bilingual, in Portuguese and English, the book seeks to systematize Portuguese terminology in the printing industry, while providing the same information in the lingua franca of today’s global market: English. In an international context, with customers, employees and producers sprinkled throughout the world, this book provides the perfect tool for an effective communication. Developed by experienced book designers and bookbinders — Itemzero and Maiadouro — this book is a summary of decades of know-how, now easily made available.

Book Synopsis Finishing in Hand Bookbinding by : Peter Fahey
Download or read book Finishing in Hand Bookbinding written by Peter Fahey and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The many excellent books on hand bookbinding that have been published are a help and inspiration to the beginner as well as the experienced craftsman. However, we feel that the operations of finishing should be explained in greater detail. No books or articles on hand finishing have been issued in recent years, giving in detail the trend of design, with the best methods and materials of craftsmanship. Very few modem designs have been illustrated or explained in treatises on binding and generally period decorations only are shown. This book is planned to overcome that lack. Each country has its distinct style and methods of hand binding. These differences in tooling and general finishing procedure are incorporated in the text of this book. The best method for the individual binding in hand may be chosen for the quickest, easiest, and best result. No historical development of cover design is given as such is obtainable in most volumes on binding. This book concentrates on actual operation and procedures of hand tooling. The chapter on design has to do with modern conception and treatment. The term "finishing" is applied to all work done after the book has been forwarded. The finisher must decide what lettering and decoration are to be put on the book. This includes tooling of the patterns in blind or with metal, onlay and inlay work, polishing and varnishing. The process of finishing is the means by which designs are put upon covers to echo the spirit of the story and what the binder thinks will further express that spirit.

Book excerpt: 'Show me something I've never seen before and will never be able to forget - if you can do that, you can do anything.' It's 1957, long before computers have replaced the trained eye and skilful hand. Our narrator at State University is determined to major in Art, and after several risible false starts, he accidentally ends up in a new class: 'Introduction to Graphic Design'. His teacher is the enigmatic Winter Sorbeck, equal parts genius, seducer and sadist. Sorbeck is a bitter yet fascinating man whose assignments hurl his charges through a gauntlet of humiliation and heartache, shame and triumph, ego-bashing and enlightenment. Along the way, friendships are made and undone, jealousies simmer, and the sexual tango weaves and dips. By the end of their 'Introduction to Graphic Design', Sorbeck's students will never see the world in the same way again. And, with Chip Kidd's insights into the secrets of graphic design, neither will you.
