Book excerpt: Annotation. Mid-Century Modern: Australian Furniture Design is the first major survey and in-depth look at one of the most innovative and influential periods (1940s to 1970s) in Australian design. This exquisite volume includes lush photographs of more than 100 iconic pieces by key designers of the period, including Grant Featherston, Douglas Snelling, Fred Lowen and Clement Meadmore. Exposed to the technological developments and international design trends of the time, these Australian designers created unique, elegant and affordable modernist works. This volume features text on various aspects of mid-century Australian design by respected authors including academics, architects, collectors and designers. Kirsty Grant, curator of the exhibition, provides an overview of furniture design from the period, and Conrad Hamann contributes an in-depth text on mid-century architecture, the natural counterpart of furniture. Denise Whitehouse writes about Grant Featherston, while Peter Atkins considers the careers of Clement Meadmore and lesser known Michael Hirst. Additional texts approach mid-century Australian furniture design from four different perspectives: that of the architect, by Neil Clerehan; the designer, by Mary Featherston; the conservator, by Suzanna Shaw; and the collector, by Dean Keep.

Book Synopsis A Cultural History of Furniture in the Modern Age by : Claire I. R. O'Mahony
Download or read book A Cultural History of Furniture in the Modern Age written by Claire I. R. O'Mahony and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Furniture is a unique witness to the transformations of private and public experience amidst the upheavals of the 20th century. How we work, rest and play are determined by the embodied encounter with furniture, defining and projecting a sense of identity and status, responding to and exemplifying contrasting social conditions, political and economic motivations, aesthetic predilections and debates. Assessing physical and archival evidence drawn from a spectrum of iconic and under-represented case studies, an international team of design historians collaborate in this volume to explore key methodological questions about how the production, consumption and mediation of furniture reveal shifting cultural habits and histories across diverse contexts amidst modernity. Drawing upon a wealth of visual and textual sources, this volume presents essays that examine key characteristics of the furniture of the period on the themes of Design and Motifs; Makers, Making, and Materials; Types and Uses; The Domestic Setting; The Public Setting; Exhibition and Display; Furniture and Architecture; Visual Representations; and Verbal Representations.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Furniture by : Fredie Floré
Download or read book The Politics of Furniture written by Fredie Floré and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many different parts of the world modern furniture elements have served as material expressions of power in the post-war era. They were often meant to express an international and in some respects apolitical modern language, but when placed in a sensitive setting or a meaningful architectural context, they were highly capable of negotiating or manipulating ideological messages. The agency of modern furniture was often less overt than that of political slogans or statements, but as the chapters in this book reveal, it had the potential of becoming a persuasive and malleable ally in very diverse politically charged arenas, including embassies, governmental ministries, showrooms, exhibitions, design schools, libraries, museums and even prisons. This collection of chapters examines the consolidating as well as the disrupting force of modern furniture in the global context between 1945 and the mid-1970s. The volume shows that key to understanding this phenomenon is the study of the national as well as transnational systems through which it was launched, promoted and received. While some chapters squarely focus on individual furniture elements as vehicles communicating political and social meaning, others consider the role of furniture within potent sites that demand careful negotiation, whether between governments, cultures, or buyer and seller. In doing so, the book explicitly engages different scholarly fields: design history, history of interior architecture, architectural history, cultural history, diplomatic and political history, postcolonial studies, tourism studies, material culture studies, furniture history, and heritage and preservation studies. Taken together, the narratives and case studies compiled in this volume offer a better understanding of the political agency of post-war modern furniture in its original historical context. At the same time, they will enrich current debates on reuse, relocation or reproduction of some of these elements.
Download or read book Featherston written by Geoff Isaac and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grant Featherston (1922-1995) was a Melbourne based industrial designer, most well-known for his Contour series of chairs. Contours were designed and developed in the early 1950s and remain highly sought after by mid-century collectors in Australia and overseas, often fetching $10,000 or more. Featherston, later joined by his wife Mary, in fact produced hundreds of chairs, just part of an astonishingly diverse output form this Australian design partnership that has gone largely uncelebrated until now. This is the first book to celebrate the life and work of Grant Featherston and focuses on the chairs produced from 1947-1975 and presents a new biography of the designer, drawn from archival research and interviews with his peers. The 70,000 word text chronologically follows the design output. The book is extensively illustrated with over 250 beautiful photographs, including a selection from the previously unpublished personal achieve of Ian Howard (the former Managing Director of Aristoc). In 1957, Featherston was appointed chief design consultant for Melbourne based manufacturer Aristoc and spent the next thirteen years designing scores of chairs. Some models were so successful that it is highly likely that nearly all Australians have sat on at least one Featherston chair in their lives. Robin Day is probably the only other mid-century designer to achieve this level of commercial success. The Featherstons were selected by Robin Boyd to design and produce the highly successful Talking chair for the Australian Pavilion at the 1967 World Expo in Montreal. In the mid-1970s the international design community was searching for production techniques that would allow chairs to be produced as a single component, requiring little effort to upholster and minimal protection for transportation. In 1973, the Featherstons? career in chair design culminated with the release of the Numero IV, the largest single-shot injection moulded chair produced anywhere in the world. Featherston's real genius lay in his ability to develop production techniques that allowed the tiny, remote Australian market to experience the Modern look. The ingenuity required to succeed and consistently deliver successful Australian modern designs, is the real, previously untold, story revealed in this book.

Book Synopsis Modernising Furniture by : Leanne Santoro
Download or read book Modernising Furniture written by Leanne Santoro and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis seeks to address the work of Australian mid-century modern furniture designers, focusing on four Melbourne-based designers, from 1946-60. Melbourne was a creative centre during this fourteen-year period, with some of the best-known modern Australian artists and designers working out of the city. This thesis will examine the furniture designed by Fred Ward (1900-1990), Fred Lowen (1919-2005), Grant Featherston (1922-1995), and Clement Meadmore (1929-2005), during this time, and will answer the question of how international design as well as Australian post-war aesthetics and society were manifested through their furniture. There has yet to be a definitive account written of the work these designers produced in the post-war era, and how Melbourne as a city responded to the emerging modernism of these designers. This thesis seeks to address this gap. It will also explore the craftsmanship of the designers, the materials and production techniques used, and the styling and marketing of the furniture. It will be shown that the majority of the furniture produced by these designers sold in large quantities and was used extensively throughout Melbourne and other cities. It will also examine the legacy of mid-century modern furniture and its resurgence in popularity in recent years.
Book Synopsis Made in Chinatown by : Peter Charles Gibson
Download or read book Made in Chinatown written by Peter Charles Gibson and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Made in Chinatown delves into a little-known aspect of Australia’s past: its hundreds of Chinese furniture factories. These businesses thrived in the post-goldrush era, becoming an important economic activity for Chinese immigrants and their descendants and a vital part of Australia’s furniture industry. Yet, owing to an exclusionary vision for Australia as a bastion of ‘white’ industry and labour, these factories were targeted by anti-Chinese political campaigns and legislative restrictions. Guided by Chinese manufacturers’ and workers’ own reflections and records, this book examines how these factories operated under the exclusionary vision of White Australia. Historian Peter Gibson uses previously untapped archival sources to investigate the local and international factors that boosted the industry, and the business and labour practices associated with factory operation. He explores the strategies employed in efforts to resist injustice, and the place of Chinese furniture factories within the contexts of Australian enterprise, work and consumerism more broadly. Made in Chinatown argues that Chinese Australian furniture manufacturers and their employees were far more adaptable, and the White Australia vision less pervasive, than most histories would suggest.
Download or read book Tamsin Johnson written by Tamsin Johnson and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book from acclaimed Australian interior designer Tamsin Johnson, known for her fresh interiors that evoke luxurious ease and coastal elegance. Tamsin Johnson’s international high-end residential projects reflect her signature ability to combine pieces from across decades and continents in ways that feel understated and natural. This knack for appearing effortless brings the ultimate level of sophistication to her work. Johnson favors elements of surprise and a sense of play in her designs, as evident in contrasts of scale, the bold use of art, and the sculptural nature of the furniture she selects or commissions. Her spaces celebrate comfort, character, and user-friendly design, and this philosophy is tangible in her showroom, where a veneration of European heritage is balanced with characteristics of modern coastal Australia. Under Johnson’s artful eye, traditional pieces become unexpectedly lighter, and a sense of luxurious ease pervades. In a trade which requires an eye for historical value, the objects Johnson sources and collects to accent her interiors have contemporary appeal—everything feels relevant and persuasive, as if even the most formal of objects could sit comfortably by your bedside. Johnson gracefully shares her ideas, images, and stories to illustrate these principles for readers, resulting in a book that is both a rich visual resource and design reference.
