Book Synopsis Modern Accounting by : Henry Rand Hatfield
Download or read book Modern Accounting written by Henry Rand Hatfield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Accounting: Its Principles and Some of Its Problems IN the following treatise an attempt is made to present the principles of accounting. In doing so the details of technic, important though they are, are purposely omitted or treated with the scantest mention. The essence of ao counting, from the author's view point, is the presentation, first, of a correct exhibit of the financial status of the con cern at a given moment of time, and, secondly, a showing of the results obtained during a given period of time. The first is embodied in the Balance Sheet; the second in the Income or Profit and Loss statement. In the ordinary routine of the accountant 's toil there is, indeed, another function; that of keeping account of claims and property, in order to secure the concern against the loss which might arise from forgetfulness, carelessness or dishonesty. This phase of accounting attains its acme in governmental accounting where the essential thing is to insure the proper handling of vast sums. But this seems a matter of much less scientific interest and is not treated in this work. The method of treatment, in general, has therefore been to consider how a given transaction is made manifest in the Balance Sheet, the goal which the accountant ever has in mind. The technical entries to be made in the journal or in other books of original entry are excluded. They are not of such importance for the forms in which such entries are made vary according to the needs of the office economy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Accounting Theory and Practice, Vol. 3: A Comprehensive Statement of Accounting, Principles and Methods, Illustrated, by Modern Forms and Problems Although history is silent regarding the origin of accountancy, we are, nevertheless, safe in assuming that, at least in its rudest form, it must have come into existence at a very early period. In all probability, the human instinct to exchange something in one's possession for something belonging to another, is responsible for the invention of some system of account-keeping. Wherever such exchange or barter required more than the mere handing over of one article in exchange for another, e.g., when it required an adjustment of valuations, a calculation was necessary to enable the carrying out of the exchange to the satisfaction of both parties. That the accountancy profession can claim antiquity is made evident in the relics of the earliest civilizations. Research among the ruins of ancient Babylon has brought to light a large number of tablets, many of which are as old as 2500 B. C., containing complete records of commercial transactions. It is even suggested that the Phœnicians evolved the alphabet for the purpose of bookkeeping, in order that they might be able to express the debits and credits and so avoid being cheated. To achieve the best results, individual accountants and accounting firms need a clear understanding of the ethical duties and decision-making involved in the four major functions of modern accounting—auditing, management accounting, tax accounting, and consulting—as well as a strong sense of ethical conduct to guide the certification and validation of reliable financial records. Now in its third edition, Accounting Ethics is a thorough and engaging exploration of the ethical issues that accountants encounter in their professional lives. Since the publication of the first edition in 2002, Accounting Ethics has become an indispensable resource for accounting courses and certification programs worldwide, known for its focus on real-world application, practical advice, reader-friendly guidance, and its insight into the effects of global change on the profession. Together with coverage of the contemporary regulatory environment—including the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, and the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act—this revised edition features expanded pedagogical resources such as new end-of-chapter case studies and discussion questions, and includes the updated AICPA Code of Conduct. Concise and dependable, Accounting Ethics sustains its reputation as an authoritative resource for practicing accountants, new professionals, students of accounting, and those who are considering the profession.

Book Synopsis Capital in the History of Accounting and Economic Thought by : Jacques Richard
Download or read book Capital in the History of Accounting and Economic Thought written by Jacques Richard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting with the first "scientific" economists such as Cantillon (1755) and Quesnay (1758) and ending with Piketty (2019), this book explores the treatment of the concept of capital in the history of accounting and economic thought. The work provides a rare juxtaposition of the reasoning, discourse and writings of accountants and economists. With regard to ‘capital’, this approach highlights the ongoing struggle between these "uncongenial twins" – as Kenneth Boulding put it – for primacy in analysing, and utilising, capitalism. But if they are certainly "uncongenial", the book also argues that it is wrong to ever classify these two disciplines as "twins" because they have taken very different paths ever since scientism came to dominate in economics and ethical and moral considerations were put to one side. This book will be of significant interest to readers to history of economic thought, critical accounting and heterodox economics.
