Book excerpt: ""This is the single best book on software quality engineering and metrics that I've encountered."" --Capers Jones, from the Foreword"Metrics and Models in Software Quality Engineering, Second Edition," is the definitive book on this essential topic of software development. Comprehensive in scope with extensive industry examples, it shows how to measure software quality and use measurements to improve the software development process. Four major categories of quality metrics and models are addressed: quality management, software reliability and projection, complexity, and customer view. In addition, the book discusses the fundamentals of measurement theory, specific quality metrics and tools, and methods for applying metrics to the software development process.New chapters bring coverage of critical topics, including: In-process metrics for software testingMetrics for object-oriented software developmentAvailability metricsMethods for conducting in-process quality assessments and software project assessmentsDos and Don'ts of Software Process Improvement, by Patrick O'TooleUsing Function Point Metrics to Measure Software Process Improvement, by Capers Jones In addition to the excellent balance of theory, techniques, and examples, this book is highly instructive and practical, covering one of the most important topics in software development--quality engineering. 0201729156B08282002

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents systems-based theory, methodology, and applications in risk modeling, assessment, and management This book examines risk analysis, focusing on quantifying risk and constructing probabilities for real-world decision-making, including engineering, design, technology, institutions, organizations, and policy. The author presents fundamental concepts (hierarchical holographic modeling; state space; decision analysis; multi-objective trade-off analysis) as well as advanced material (extreme events and the partitioned multi-objective risk method; multi-objective decision trees; multi-objective risk impact analysis method; guiding principles in risk analysis); avoids higher mathematics whenever possible; and reinforces the material with examples and case studies. The book will be used in systems engineering, enterprise risk management, engineering management, industrial engineering, civil engineering, and operations research. The fourth edition of Risk Modeling, Assessment, and Management features: Expanded chapters on systems-based guiding principles for risk modeling, planning, assessment, management, and communication; modeling interdependent and interconnected complex systems of systems with phantom system models; and hierarchical holographic modeling An expanded appendix including a Bayesian analysis for the prediction of chemical carcinogenicity, and the Farmer’s Dilemma formulated and solved using a deterministic linear model Updated case studies including a new case study on sequential Pareto-optimal decisions for emergent complex systems of systems A new companion website with over 200 solved exercises that feature risk analysis theories, methodologies, and application Risk Modeling, Assessment, and Management, Fourth Edition, is written for both undergraduate and graduate students in systems engineering and systems management courses. The text also serves as a resource for academic, industry, and government professionals in the fields of homeland and cyber security, healthcare, physical infrastructure systems, engineering, business, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2004 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: 1,0 (A), University Karlsruhe (TH) (Institute for Computer Science), language: English, abstract: While computer scientists have developed and provided several powerful computer languages and techniques in the last decades, facilitating the development of modular, maintainable and e±cient code, software development itself has changed fundamentally. Software development today treats often with large-scale projects, immense development costs, and complex sys- tems which typically deploy multiple technologies and require multiple participants for their development. As with any large development exercise, the development of a complex system must be systematic and structured in order to manage this complexity, and in order to make possible the future maintenance and evolution of the system. Thus, while systematic and structured approaches are necessary for the development of such systems, software engineers have attempted to provide the structured methodologies and formalisms so often lacking in large software development projects. However, software development projects are still related with many di®erent high risks. These risks cause software engineering projects to exceed bud- gets, miss deadlines, or deliver less than satisfactory products. As an example, U.S. companies alone spent an estimated $59 billion in cost overruns on IT projects and another $81 billion on cancelled software projects in 1995 (Johnson 1995). One reason for these high costs is that managers are not using adequate measures and executing e±cient risk management assess and mitigate the risks involved in these projects. Although risk taking is essential to progress, and failure is often a key part of learning, the inevitability of risks does not imply the inability to recognize and manage risks to minimize potential negative consequences while retaining the opportunities for creating new and better software. Obviously, this risk management process is particularly di±cult for large-scale soft- ware projects and be handled in the same way as for small project, or just by providing more resources for all development factors.

This series of conferences was set up by the European societies with the aim of providing an international forum for researchers, developersand users of software engineering technology. The need for a meeting point to discuss new results and useful experiences was clear from the large amount of high-quality European software engineering researchin recent years, stimulated, for example, through major European research programmes. The 22 papers in these proceedings were selected from 133 papers submitted from 26 different countries. They cover a fairly broad range of themes such as formal methods and practical experiences with them, special techniques for real-time systems, software evolution and re-engineering, software engineering environments, and software metrics. Invited papers by well-known experts address further important areas: perspectives on configuration management, software factories, user interfacedesign, computer security, and technology transfer.

Book excerpt: Software Engineering Fundamentals is distinctive in its reportage of such subject matters as real-time software design, software metrics, reliability, planning, testing and integration, cost and schedule estimation, human factors, process sizing, quality assurance, technical management, and risk management. If one takes a look regressively back and indulge into more abstract and theoretical facades of some of the programming language, he may find two reasons to get familiar with it. Initially, these factors almost always dictate critical decisions as to what instruments to use and when to implement. People don't intend to engage in using the inaccurate technology for a piece of work, provided they are devoting themselves to create a large software platform. Besides, tools that are different can keep taking considerable time to settle down. If one has to opt for a new device that is radically different from what he is accustomed to, comprehending the basic principles will ensure a smooth transition.
