A partir de ce domaine de la physique, nous expliquerons leurs propriétés atypiques, comme le fait d'interdire tout état propagatif sur une gamme de fréquence, de localiser spatialement ou fréquentiellement une onde, d'obtenir une ultraréfraction négative...Nous étudierons et comparerons la plupart des méthodes permettant de modéliser les cristaux photoniques dont une plus particulièrement, la multidiffusion. Cette théorie analytique est appliquée à une collection de diffuseurs sphériques plus ou moins ordonnés afin d'étudier différents types de défauts apparaissant dans les cristaux photoniques. Les techniques de mesure en espace libre développées pour ces matériaux confirmeront nos résultats théoriques. Elle nous permettront aussi de caractériser en micro-ondes des cristaux photoniques tridimensionnels réalisées à partir de polymères conducteurs. Ces matéraiaux dont leur première application est la compatibilité électromagnétique pourront dans un futur proche bouleverser le domaine des télécommunications optiques et micro-ondes
