Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this technical age, wood-machining has largely remained an art for a lack of scientific investigation in this field. An Analysis of the Wood-Cutting Process was prepared to provide a basic understanding of wood-cutting and in particular of parallel-grain wood-cutting. Norman C. Franz is an Associate Professor of Wood Technology in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Michigan. The wood-cutting process is defined in terms of the interactions between wood properties, cutting geometry, and the friction between the chip and the tool. In continuous observations, three basic types of chip were identified--each having generated a related quality of surface. In the analysis of the mechanics of chip formation, the book describes the determination of machining efficiency and surface quality; by demonstrated calculations of optimum cutting angles for given wood properties, an equation is derived for the control of surface quality in wood-cutting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. R. Peter King covers the field of quantitative modeling of mineral processing equipment and the use of these models to simulate the actual behavior of ore dressing and coal washing as they are configured to work in industrial practice. The material is presented in a pedagogical style that is particularly suitable for readers who wish to learn the wide variety of modeling methods that have evolved in this field. The models vary widely from one unit type to another. As a result each model is described in some detail. Wherever possible model structure is related to the underlying physical processes that govern the behaviour of particulate material in the processing equipment. Predictive models are emphasised throughout so that, when combined, they can be used to simulate the operation of complex mineral processing flowsheets. The development of successful simulation techniques is a major objective of the work that is covered in the text. - Covers all aspects of modeling and simulation - Provides all necessary tools to put the theory into practice

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powder flow has attracted increased attention in recent years as novel formulated and functional products are being developed in powder forms, particularly in pharmaceutical and high value additive manufacturing industries. This book meets a need for a truly integrated modern treatment of dry powder flow, covering theory, robust characterisation techniques, modelling tools and applications. Written by leaders in the field, the book opens by introducing the wide range of powder processing problems faced by industry, the complexities of powders and the myriad of ways their flow behaviour can be characterised. The authors then move on, with contributions from experts, to describe fundamental properties that can be measured, defining the states of stress and shear rate and the considerations that need to be taken account. By providing a comprehensive treatment of all available characterisation techniques, as well as various modelling tools, the reader obtains a clear, practical overview. Case studies and applications connect theory to practical examples across a broad range of industries. This book stands out by not only providing the reader with guidance on what to measure but also how to interpret results, ensuring this is an invaluable text for anyone working on powder flow in the chemical, pharmaceutical and manufacturing industries, as well as students and researchers across chemical and process engineering disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using plant material as raw materials for construction is a relatively recent and original topic of research. This book presents an overview of the current knowledge on the material properties and environmental impact of construction materials made from plant particles, which are renewable, recyclable and easily available. It focuses on particles and as well on fibers issued from hemp plant, as well as discussing hemp concretes. The book begins by setting the environmental, economic and social context of agro-concretes, before discussing the nature of plant-based aggregates and binders. The formulation, implementation and mechanical behavior of such building materials are the subject of the following chapters. The focus is then put upon the hygrothermal behavior and acoustical properties of hempcrete, followed by the use of plant-based concretes in structures. The book concludes with the study of life-cycle analysis (LCA) of the environmental characteristics of a banked hempcrete wall on a wooden skeleton. Contents 1. Book excerpt: Particle breakage is an important process within a wide range of solids processing industries, including pharmaceuticals, food, agricultural and mining. Breakage of particles can be defined as intentional and unintentional, depending on whether it is desired or not. Through understanding of the science and underlying mechanisms behind this phenomenon, particle breakage can be either minimised or encouraged within an efficient and effective process. Particle Breakage examines particle breakage at three different length scales, ranging from single particle studies through groups of particles and looking at solid processing steps as a whole. This book is the widest ranging book in the field and includes the most up-to-date techniques such as Distinct Element Method (DEM), Monte Carlo simulations and Population Balance Equations (PBE). This handbook provides an overview of the current state-of-the- art and particle breakage. From the small scale of a single particle, to the study of whole processes for breakage; both by experimental study and mathematical modelling.* Covering a wide range of subjects and industrial applications* Allows the reader an understanding of the science behind engineered breakage processes* Giving an unrestrictive and interdisciplinary approach
