La convection profonde et les processus de transport à longue distance (e.g. Jet d’Est Africain, Jet d’Est Tropical) qui caractérisent cette région pendant la saison de la mousson peuvent redistribuer ces émissions vers la haute troposphère et en dehors du continent africain. Le but de ce travail de thèse est d’étudier l’influence de ces processus sur la composition chimique de l’atmosphère en Afrique équatoriale. Ce travail s’inscrit dans le cadre de la campagne de mesures AMMA qui a eu lieu en été 2006. Les données mesurées pendant cette campagne ainsi que les données fournies par le programme MOZAIC et par des observations satellites sont analysées et confrontées aux résultats du modèle global de chimie-climat LMDz_INCA. Cela permet d’évaluer les performances du modèle LMDz_INCA d’une part et, d’autre part, de mieux analyser l’influence des émissions et des processus de transport sur le bilan régional de l’ozone (O3) en Afrique équatoriale. La première partie de ce travail est consacrée à l’étude de l’influence du transport convectif et des oxydes d’azote (NOx) émis par les éclairs sur l’ozone et ses précurseurs en Afrique équatoriale. La seconde partie est consacrée à l’analyse de l’impact du transport des émissions par les feux de biomasse en Afrique centrale sur la composition chimique de la troposphère. La dernière partie traite de la contribution des émissions africaines et asiatiques au bilan régional de l'ozone en Afrique équatoriale.

Book excerpt: L'absorption des aérosols est une propriété clé pour évaluer les impacts radiatifs des aérosols, tant directs que sur les propriétés des nuages, sur le climat à l'échelle régionale. Des études récentes ont montré que certains composés d'aérosols organiques (OC), appelés « carbone brun » (BrOC), émis principalement par la combustion de biomasse, peuvent absorber de manière significative le rayonnement solaire dans le spectre ultraviolet-visible-proche infrarouge. L'objectif principal de ce travail est d'améliorer la représentation des propriétés d'absorption des aérosols dans les modèles de climat régionaux. Nous nous concentrons sur les panaches de particules de feux de biomasse transportés au-dessus des nuages dans la région de l'Atlantique Sud-Est, au large de la côte ouest de l'Afrique. C'est une région présentée comme un laboratoire naturel pour mieux comprendre la complexité des interactions aérosol-nuage. La méthodologie repose sur des simulations numériques régionales d'aérosols à partir du modèle couplé météorologie-chimie WRF-Chem, combinées à un inventaire détaillé des émissions de feux de biomasse et à différents ensembles d'observations innovants de télédétection des aérosols, à la fois par ciel clair et nuageux à partir du capteur spatial POLDER-3/PARASOL. La littérature actuelle indique que le carbone brun absorbe plus efficacement le rayonnement UV-bleu que le carbone suie pur (BC). L'idée est d'exploiter cette spécificité en comparant la dépendance spectrale de l'albédo de simple diffusion issue des observations POLDER-3 dans la gamme de longueurs d'onde 443-1 020 nm avec celle simulée pour différentes proportions de BC, OC et BrOC. Ces tests de sensibilité reposent sur deux principales contraintes : le maintien d'une épaisseur optique aérosol par ciel dégagé/au-dessus des nuages et d'un rapport de masse (BC sur OC) réalistes. Des expériences de modélisation sont présentées et discutées afin de fournir de nouvelles estimations de la teneur en carbone suie, carbone organique et carbone brun dans les panaches d'aérosols de feux de biomasse africains transportés dans la région de l'Atlantique Sud-Est.

Book excerpt: Fire, as a significant global source of trace gases and aerosol particles, plays an important role in perturbations of the chemical and physical properties of the atmosphere. Fire products from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor on polar-orbiting satellites Terra and Aqua are largely used in several emission inventories. However, the MODIS fire products have inherent limitations due to the following reasons: (a) they cannot detect fires underneath clouds; (b) the fire detection sensitivity decreases at the edge of MODIS scan where viewing angles and MODIS pixel sizes are bigger than at nadir; and (c) there are gaps between MODIS swaths at the ground in low latitude regions. This study develops an empirical method to remedy these limitations and applied this method to improve pixel level emission, (hereafter the new emission). Another comparison emission, "scale old" emission, was also built after multiplying the daily domain emission ratio of new and original with original emission. In order to evaluate the bias correction method, three Weather Research and Forecasting model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) simulations were conducted using original (hereafter, old), new, and "scale old" emissions in January 2010 over the northern sub-Saharan African region. A two-day case study and assessment of the WRF-Chem simulation for one month show the new emission implementation improved the model performance especially at satellite gap and large viewing angle regions. The comparison between model simulated aerosol vertical profile and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar data with Orthogonal Polarization data also demonstrated the new emission increased the model performance.

Book excerpt: Bien que le feu soit reconnu comme un facteur d'influence dans la dynamique de végétation des savanes, son rôle n'est pas clairement défini. Cette thèse aborde le problème de l'étude de la relation entre l'usage des feux et la dynamique de végétation. L'approche choisie repose sur l'analyse de séries temporelles d'images de télédétection à moyenne résolution spatiale. Les savanes étudiées sont situées sur le bassin versant de Marovoay au nord-ouest de Madagascar. Dans la mesure où il n'existe pas de consensus quant aux méthodes à utiliser, les savanes de Madagascar offrent un contexte particulier, en raison de la dégradation très prononcée du couvert végétal et des changements recherchés, pour tester les méthodes existantes et en proposer des nouvelles. Le premier objectif de ce travail est d'identifier le régime des feux à travers le suivi des variations spatio-temporelles des surfaces brûlées en milieu de savane. Pour cela, une méthode de cartographie des surfaces brûlées a été développée : elle est basée sur le calcul d'un indicateur annuel indiquant le passage d'un feu pendant la saison sèche et d'un indicateur saisonnier traduisant la période de passage du feu. Cette méthode, appliquée au site d'étude, a permis de produire une série temporelle de données utilisées pour caractériser le régime des feux à partir de deux paramètres, la période d'occurrence et la fréquence de passage du feu. En parallèle, le deuxième objectif consiste à caractériser la dynamique de végétation par l'analyse des variations spatio-temporelles de l'activité végétale. Deux approches de détection des changements, basées sur le traitement de série temporelle de NDVI, ont été testées. La première repose sur l'analyse des variations inter annuelles d'un indicateur phénologique traduisant l'activité végétale pendant la phase de croissance des savanes. La deuxième utilise une technique de décomposition temporelle pour extraire la tendance d'une série de NDVI. Dans les deux cas, les résultats ont permis de caractériser la dynamique de végétation à travers trois classes d'évolution de l'activité végétale (séries progressive, régressive ou stable). Ces résultats ont été évalués par comparaison avec ceux issus de techniques de détection des changements basées sur l'analyse diachronique d'images à haute résolution spatiale. Enfin, dans la dernière étape du travail, nous avons étudié les relations entre les informations relatives aux régimes des feux et à la dynamique de végétation en utilisant des modèles de régression multivariée. L'objectif est d'estimer l'importance et le rôle du feu dans la dynamique de végétation. Les résultats ont amené à trois conclusions : a) Le feu est un facteur de maintien des savanes ; b) Dans les situations où la pression liée aux activités anthropiques est faible, le feu, en particulier par la fréquence de son usage, est un facteur déterminant de la dynamique de végétation ; c) Dans les autres situations, l'interprétation des résultats est complexe et difficile, très certainement en raison de l'interaction de multiples facteurs anthropiques.
