Book Synopsis Finite Element Modeling and Simulation of Thermomechanical Processing of Particle Reinforced Metal Matrix Composites by : Kendall Gennick

This book was released on 1997-03-01 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the consolidation phase, reinforcement particles of Metal Matrix Composites (MMC's) tend to be non uniformly distributed. The result is that the material properties of the composite materials are not as good as those originally desired. Through large amounts of straining, homogeneity can be achieved. Finite element models of MMC's undergoing different thermomechanical processes (TMP's) to true strains of approximately 1.2 were generated. The models consist of particle clusters within the particle-depleted matrix. The particle clusters were modeled by either a smeared model in which the particles refine the grains in the cluster, or a discrete model of the particles within clusters. The smeared and discrete models qualitatively agreed with each other. The results suggest that the best TMP to reach a state of reinforcement particle homogeneity was a hot worked, low strain rate TMP.
Book Synopsis Low-density, High-strength Intermetallic Matrix Composites by XD (trademark) Synthesis by :

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increasing need for lightweight high performance materials in today's aerospace arena. High temperature engine designs, for example, require engine materials with elevated temperature strength, creep resistance, damage tolerance, oxidation resistance, and low density. Ordered intermetallics are considered potential alternatives to superalloys because they exhibit many of these properties. A major problem with most ordered alloys is their tendency toward inherently low ductility. The reasons can be quite varied depending on the alloy system, and include poor grain-boundary cohesion, an insufficient number of available slip systems (primarily in non-cubic alloys), limited cross slip, and impurity locking of dislocations. However, intermetallics of high symmetry, such as the L12 structure, have a number of slip systems, which can provide some plasticity, at least at intermediate temperatures, thus enabling the matrix to accommodate some of the strain associated with the thermal stresses.
Book Synopsis Fiber-reinforced Metal-matrix Composites by : Curtis Maitland Jackson
Download or read book Fiber-reinforced Metal-matrix Composites written by Curtis Maitland Jackson and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introductory sections contain a brief discussion of the general methods of producing fiber-reinforced composites and of the theory of fiber-reinforcement of metals. The body of the report describes research on fiber-reinforced metal matrix composites, and is organized according to metal matrix materials. For convenience, the report is divided into two sections: Low density matrices (including aluminum, magnesium, and titanium and their alloys) and high density matrices (cobalt, copper and its alloys, iron, lead-tin alloys, nickel and nickel alloys, silver, tantalum, and tungsten). Book excerpt: The concept of reinforcing a material by the use of a fiber is not a new one. The Egyptian brick layer employed the same principle more than three thousand years ago when straw was incorporated into the bricks. More recent examples of fiber reinforced composites are steel-reinforced concrete, nylon and rayon cord reinforced tires, and fiberglass reinforced plastics. In the last several years considerable progress has been made on new composite structures particularly utilizing boron (on tungsten substrate) fibers in various matrices. Many of these advances have been reviewed recently by P. M. Sinclair1 and by Alexander, Shaver, and Withers.2 An excellent earlier survey is available by Rauch Sutton, and McCreight.3 Boron-reinforced epoxy composites are being fabricated and tested as jet engine components, fuselage components, and even as a complete aircraft wing because of the tremendous gain in experimentally demonstrated properties such as modulus, strength, and fatigue resistance, particularly on a weight normalized (e.g., strength/density) basis. Other than glass/epoxy and boron/ epoxy composites and perhaps boron/aluminum, the systems now under study are in the early stages of research and development. These include other boron/metal composites, graphite/polymer, graphite/metal, graphite/graphite, alumina/metal, and aligned eutectic (directionally, solidified) combinations. As Sinclair points out, designers are wary about filamentary composites becausethere is little background information and scant experience.

Book excerpt: Metal Matrix Composites: Thermomechanical Behavior discusses metal matrix composites, elaborating on that consists of two phases—fiber as reinforcement and metal as matrix. This book focuses on polymer matrix composites, including topics in metal matrix composites ranging from processing to fracture mechanics. The three basic types of composite materials—dispersion-strengthened, particle-reinforced, and fiber (whisker)-reinforced, are also described in detail. Dispersion-strengthened is characterized by a microstructure consisting of an elemental matrix within which fine particles are uniformly dispersed, while particle-reinforced is indicated by dispersed particles of greater than 1.0 μm diameter with a volume fraction of 5 to 40%. Fiber (whisker)-reinforced provides a distinguishing microstructural feature of fiber-reinforced materials, such as that the reinforcing fiber has one long dimension, while the reinforcing particles of the other two types do not. This publication serves as a reference data book to students and researchers aiming to acquire knowledge of the thermomechanical behavior of metal matrix composites.
Book Synopsis Interfaces in Metal Matrix Composites by : Arthur G. Metcalfe
Download or read book Interfaces in Metal Matrix Composites written by Arthur G. Metcalfe and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfaces in Metal Matrix Composites, Volume 1 presents the position of the science of interfaces, as well as the necessary background for the effort in progress to apply these materials. The book discusses the mechanical and physical aspects of the interface; the effect of the interface on longitudinal tensile properties; and the effect of the filament-matrix interface on off-axis tensile strength. The text also describes the role of the interface on elastic-plastic composite behavior; the effect of interface on fracture; and the interfaces in oxide reinforced metals and in directionally solidified eutectics. The effect of impurity on reinforcement-matrix compatibility is also considered. Metallurgical engineers and people involved in the study of materials science will find the book invaluable.
