Many models have been used to study this interaction during the last several decades. Empirical studies suggest that land use and transportation patterns can be highly variable between geographic areas and at different spatial and temporal scales. Identifying these changes presents a major challenge. When we recognize that long-term changes could be affected by other factors such as population growth, economic development, and policy decisions, the challenge becomes even more overwhelming. Most existing land use and transportation interaction models are based on some prior theories and use mathematical or simulation approaches to study the problem. However, the literature also suggests that little consensus regarding the conclusions can be drawn from empirical studies that apply [to] these models. There is a clear research need to develop alternative methods that will allow us to examine the land use and transportation patterns in more flexible ways and to help us identify potential improvements to the existing models. This dissertation presents a spatio-temporal data model that offers exploratory data analysis capabilities to interactively examine the land use and transportation interaction at use-specified spatial and temporal scales. The spatio-temporal patterns and the summary statistics derived from this interactive exploratory analysis process can be used to help us evaluate the hypotheses and modify the structures used in the existing models. The results also can suggest additional analyses for a better understanding of land use and transportation interaction. This dissertation first introduces a conceptual framework for the spatio-temporal data model. Then, based on a systematic method for explorations of various data sets relevant to land use and transportation interaction, this dissertation details procedures of designing and implementing the spatio-temporal data model. Finally, the dissertation describes procedures of creating tools for generating the proposed spatio-temporal data model from existing snapshot GIS data sets and illustrate its use by means of exploratory data analysis. Use of the spatio-temporal data model in this dissertation study makes it feasible to analyze spatio-temporal interaction patterns in a more effective and efficient way than the conventional snapshot GIS approach. Extending Sinton's measurement framework into a spatio-temporal conceptual interaction framework, on the other hand, provides a systematic means of exploring land use and transportation interaction.

This project produced 100 case studies of already-built highway capacity projects and their economic development impacts. To accomplish this, the study team compiled pre/post economic and land development data and conducted local interviews, in order to portray the actual, observed economic development impacts of those projects. The results were put into a database and classified by type of project and local setting. An accompanying web tool, called T-PICS (Transportation Project Impact Case Studies), was developed to provide access to the case study information so it can be used to portray the range of economic development impacts occurring as a result of different types of projects in different settings.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Across the United States, the need and value of coordinated land use and transportation planning have become a highly debated topic. There are those who believe that the coordination of land use and transportation is best served in the development of compact communities with alternate modes of travel. This approach is thought to preserve natural resources and result in a reduction in the number and length of vehicle trips. Others believe that such compact developments will lead to highly congested transportation systems. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has acknowledged the need and value of coordinating land use and transportation planning, and has taken several initiatives to integrate these processes. In addition, there have been a variety of previous research efforts which investigated specific relationships between various individual land use measures and transportation outcomes. Such efforts have also included the development of various entropy values and metrics which serve to combine various land use measures. Generally speaking, compact developments, with high population and employment density, good street connectivity, and access to transit have been shown to be associated with lower vehicle miles traveled (VMT). The objective of this thesis was to examine whether the latest published metric for evaluating the sprawl of Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) is correlated with transportation outcomes, as predicted by the relationships reported in the literature. To do so, a comprehensive literature review was conducted. The quantitative relationships between land use measures and transportation outcomes were extracted from the literature and cataloged. Those land use measures and transportation outcomes that were consistently found to be correlated were identified. The transportation data was extracted from the latest release of the Urban Mobility Report. Using linear regression analysis, the relationship between the latest sprawl index values and the transportation data was examined. Based on linear regression analysis, the latest sprawl index was found to be negatively related to vehicle miles traveled (VMT), such that the vehicle miles traveled (VMT) decreased for less sprawling MSAs .The relationship suggests that those who live in less sprawling areas tend to drive less by almost 1.6 miles per day. The annual hours of travel delay was also found to be negatively related to the sprawl index, such that the annual hours of travel delay decreased for less sprawling MSAs. This relationship suggests that those people living in compact areas experience less travel delay than those in more sprawling areas. These findings agree with the results of previous studies favoring compactness over sprawl.

Book excerpt: Recent research has begun generating a much richer, activity-based behavioral framework to replace the conventional aggregate, four-step approaches. However, to date, the framework remains to be completed, at least enough to provide a robust behavioral foundation that incorporates household long-term behaviors with routine travel and activity patterns. The objective of this research is to explore aspects of activity-based urban modeling that could assist in understanding changing land use and transportation interactions as information technologies enable more complex measurement and modeling, and alter the economics of urban transportation by improving last-mile logistics and facilitating car sharing. The research focuses on specific issues and strategies for developing household, quasi-activity-based, urban modeling prototypes that could simulate the impacts of transport innovations in metropolitan areas. In our implementation and development of the Lisbon model, we started with case 0 first - the four-step travel demand model without considering any land use change. Then given the considerations of data and modeling purpose, what began as a standard version of the UrbanSim model linked to the four-step travel demand model (in Case 1) has evolved into a modified version of the UrbanSim connected to a uniquely formulated tour-based travel model (in Case 2) that not only adjusted the model specification for certain components, but also changed some of the assumptions about household behavior and heterogeneity. The modified UrbanSim model suggests some improvement over the standard version, in differentiating the accessibility for different types of households. However, it is still far from the considerations of household interactions that many planners consider important in the household long-term choices. One key objective of the research is to improve the ability of the models to simulate the impacts of transportation innovations on household-level activity patterns and residential location choice in metro Lisbon. Since transportation innovations and economic restructuring can trigger substantial changes in place/space/household interactions, household-level adjustments can involve changes in car ownership, trip chaining, repackaging of household trips and the like. Therefore, I propose an accessibility indicator that addresses these considerations when evaluating the attractiveness of destinations and modes. The indicators are measured at the household level and facilitate micro-simulation of residential location choice while accounting for household-specific trip chaining, scheduling, and mode choice options. This household quasi-activity- based urban modeling framework (Case 3), represents a progression of behavioral models that capture observably significant behavioral differences in Lisbon. In the simulation experiments, the quasi-household-activity-based urban modeling framework (Case 3) is applied only for two-worker households for which sufficient activity data are available in Lisbon. The quantitative results from simulating the urban development impacts of the proposed policy changes in the Lisbon Metropolitan in next 25 years under Case 0, Case 1, Case 2 and Case 3 demonstrate the progression of experiments with alternative strategies for incorporating key activity-based elements into LUTE models. The main contributions of the dissertation include the development and implementation of quasi-activity-based modeling framework and specific techniques to assess the impacts of transportation innovations and energy and environmental constraints on urban development patterns. This represents an alternative approach to the traditional land use and transportation interaction research and overcomes some major obstacles to model household activity and mobility. It also has significant applications for transportation and urban planning in the information and communication technology (ICT) age. The dissertation demonstrates the use of emerging information technologies, modern federated database management and distributed modeling techniques to facilitate the 'what if' analyses of changing land use and transportation circumstances, induced by the new ICTs in metropolitan areas.
