Yet, few exceptions exist in which large numbers are simulated in regional settings, due to data and computational constraints. The first modeling study of this kind was performed in the Nebraska Sand Hills, the largest (~50,000 km2) grass-stabilized dune region in the Western Hemisphere, containing thousands of small closed-basin lakes (and wetlands) in hydraulic connection with the High Plains aquifer. In the semi-arid climate, groundwater recharge is critical to the high water table and strong discharge that maintains lakes, streams, and wetlands---features providing habitat for many unique species, productivity of a large beef cattle industry, and important to salt dust emissions. Co-evolution of the ecosystems, hydrologic processes, and regional climate over the past several hundred years has created a self-sustaining system, but a system that if disturbed too greatly may not persist. In the context of 21st century climate change, individual lake dynamics at annual time scales are of limited interest. Future groundwater recharge scenarios were developed from decadal changes in the difference between precipitation and evapotranspiration from 16 Global Circulation Models and three emissions scenarios. The central tendency is for minor changes, with a much larger uncertainty range. Vadose zone modeling of steady vertical flow shows large spatial variation of soil moisture lag times in the extant climate, and slight changes under future conditions, with an average around five years, shorter than the decade-centennial time scale of interest. A numerical groundwater flow model was developed, calibrated, and used to simultaneously simulate large-scale aquifer behavior, stream baseflows, and the spatial distribution, and total area and numbers of the many scattered lakes and wetlands. Simulated hydraulic heads were downscaled for comparison with the fine-resolution digital elevation model. Response time of groundwater-controlled surface water features suggests that climate change impacts are greatly delayed and dispersed by the groundwater system, but non-linearly dependent upon groundwater recharge regime.

The development and over-exploitation of groundwater resources in certain parts of the country have raised the concern and need for judicious and scientific resource management and conservation. A complexity of factors - hydrogeological, hydrological and climatological, control the groundwater occurrence and movement. The precise assessment of recharge and discharge is rather difficult, as no techniques are currently available for their direct measurements. Hence, the methods employed for groundwater resource estimation are all indirect. Groundwater being a dynamic and replenishable resource is generally estimated based on the component of annual recharge, which could be subjected to development by means of suitable groundwater structures. Mathematical models are tools, which are frequently used in studying groundwater systems. In general, mathematical models are used to simulate (or to predict) the groundwater flow. Predictive simulations must be viewed as estimates, dependent upon the quality and uncertainty of the input data. Model conceptualization is the process in which data describing field conditions are assembled in a systematic way to describe groundwater flow processes at a site. The model conceptualization aids in determining the modelling approach and which model software to use. Taking the base from my lecture notes delivered in various training courses during last 26 years and further editing and additions, I have developed this book titled “Groundwater Assessment and Modelling”. The book is intended to provide a comprehensive treatise related to assessment and modelling of groundwater. It includes chapters on assessment of groundwater potential, groundwater data requirement and analysis, basic concepts and guidelines for groundwater modelling, groundwater modelling software, modelling of unsaturated flow, modelling of sea water intrusion, and impact of climate change on groundwater resources. I hope this book will be quite useful for undergraduate and postgraduate students (water resources engineering), field engineers and researchers working in the area of assessment, development and management of groundwater resources.

Temperature increases also affect the hydrologic cycle by directly increasing evaporation of available surface water and vegetation transpiration. Consequently, these changes can influence precipitation amounts, timings and intensity rates, and indirectly impact the flux and storage of water in surface and subsurface reservoirs (i.e., lakes, soil moisture, groundwater). In addition, there may be other associated impacts, such as sea water intrusion, water quality deterioration, potable water shortage, etc. While climate change affects surface water resources directly through changes in the major long-term climate variables such as air temperature, precipitation, and evapotranspiration, the relationship between the changing climate variables and groundwater is more complicated and poorly understood. The greater variability in rainfall could mean more frequent and prolonged periods of high or low groundwater levels, and saline intrusion in coastal aquifers due to sea level rise and resource reduction. Groundwater resources are related to climate change through the direct interaction with surface water resources, such as lakes and rivers, and indirectly through the recharge process. Book excerpt: "Groundwater discharge provides critical thermal refuge for cold-water fishes in many river systems in North America, but the impact of future climate change on the timing, magnitude, and temperature of groundwater discharge has not been previously considered. This dissertation investigates the hydraulic and thermal influence of climate change on unconfined aquifers, particularly in the context of the climate and hydrology of the Little Southwest Miramichi River in New Brunswick, Canada. The thermal sensitivity of groundwater to climate change was investigated via (1) analytical, (2) empirical, and (3) numerical methods. Firstly, an analytical solution was developed to the transient, one-dimensional conduction-advection equation subject to nonlinear initial and boundary conditions. Secondly, an empirical ground surface temperature to groundwater temperature transfer function was developed from measured surface and groundwater temperature data and then explicitly coupled to a soil-vegetation-atmosphere-transfer (SVAT) model to investigate the subsurface thermal influence of climate change. Thirdly, a finite element model of coupled groundwater flow and energy transport with pore water phase change (SUTRA) was linked to surficial energy and hydrologic models to investigate the influence of changing precipitation and air temperature on the timing, magnitude, and temperature of groundwater discharge from unconfined aquifers. In general, the simulation results demonstrate that the hydraulic and thermal regimes of shallow aquifers are very sensitive to changing precipitation and air temperature, and that future climate change will likely limit the distribution of suitable cold-water thermal refugia in warming rivers."--Page ii.

Several contributing papers focused on case studies using Regional Climate Models (RCMs) linked to hydrological models, applied to the analysis of runoff under conditions of convective activity and extreme precipitation, in regions of complex topography, or stakeholder-driven investigations such as water runoff simulations in Quebec undertaken for a major utility. Thorough analyses of GCM results for the Century were reported at the Workshop, in order to illustrate the improvements in model results which have taken place in recent years, and the increasing confidence with which the models can be used for projecting climatic change in coming decades. However, there is still much room for improvement; there is also a need to address more fully the manner in which climate and impacts models (e. g. , hydrological models) can be linked, in terms of consistency and the overlap between different scales, the underlying physical assumptions, and the parameterizations used. Session 2 was devoted to the two extremes of water resources, namely floods and droughts, the focus here being to identify the climate change component in river floods. These have significant economic implications, as was shown by several scientists from Western and Central Europe. Many long time series have been studied worldwide with the aim of detection of nonstationarities, yet there is no conclusive evidence of climate-related changes in flow records, in general.
