Book excerpt: This book examines policy issues, projection models, and data bases pertaining to the supply of, demand for, and quality of teachers in the United States from kindergarten to twelfth grade. It identifies additional data needed to clarify policy issues or for use in projection models, with a long-range view of contributing to the development of a teaching force of higher quality in the United States. The book has major implications for the teacher work force and for statisticians and researchers involved in investigating, modeling, and projecting teacher supply, demand, and quality.

Whether or not this is a recognition of apparent existential challenges or not, aspiring higher education administrators, faculty, and trustees need to have an understanding of the varying types of higher education institutions in the USA and an awareness of how other countries structure their higher education systems and how they are preparing to deal with the challenges. Additionally, they require deep knowledge of how these systems measure success or failure. Improving Higher Education Models Through International Comparative Analysis explores critical aspects and challenges in the higher education setting, describes and analyzes initiatives being taken to address these challenges, and presents case studies to help foster a better understanding and create competency in strategic thinking and problem solving for higher education leadership. Covering key topics such as sustainability, education systems, and the digital age, this premier reference source is ideal for administrators, policymakers, researchers, academicians, practitioners, scholars, instructors, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in economics is at an all-time high. Among the challenges facing the nation is an economy with rapidly rising unemployment, failures of major businesses and industries, and continued dependence on oil with its wildly fluctuating price. Americans are debating the proper role of the government in company bailouts, the effectiveness of tax cuts versus increased government spending to stimulate the economy, and potential effects of deflation. Economists have dealt with such questions for generations, but they have taken on new meaning and significance. Tackling these questions and encompassing analysis of traditional economic theory and topics as well as those that economists have only more recently addressed, 21st Century Economics: A Reference Handbook is intended to meet the needs of several types of readers. Undergraduate students preparing for exams will find summaries of theory and models in key areas of micro and macroeconomics. Readers interested in learning about economic analysis of an issue as well students embarking on research projects will find introductions to relevant theory and empirical evidence. And economists seeking to learn about extensions of analysis into new areas or about new approaches will benefit from chapters that introduce cutting-edge topics. To make the book accessible to undergraduate students, models have been presented only in graphical format (minimal calculus) and empirical evidence has been summarized in ways that do not require much background in statistics or econometrics. It is thereby hoped that chapters will provide both crucial information and inspiration in a non-threatening, highly readable format.

Book excerpt: This report presents information regarding the patterns of variation in the salaries paid to public and private school teachers in relation to various personal and job characteristics. Specifically, the analysis examines the relationship between compensation and variables such as public/private schools, gender, race/ethnic background, school level and type, teacher qualifications, and different work environments. The economic conceptual framework of hedonic wage theory, which illuminates the trade-offs between monetary rewards and the various sets of characteristics of employees and jobs, was used to analyze The Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS) database. The national survey was administered by the National Center for Education Statistics during the 1987-88, 1990-91, and 1993-94 school years. Findings indicate that on average, public school teachers earned between about 25 to 119 percent higher salaries than did private school teachers, depending on the private subsector. Between about 2 and 50 percent of the public-private difference could be accounted for by differences in teacher characteristics, depending on the private subsector. White and Hispanic male public school teachers earned higher salaries than their female counterparts. Hedonic wage theory would predict that teacher salaries would be higher in schools with more challenging, more difficult, and less desirable work environments. Schools with higher levels of student violence, lower levels of administrative support, and large class sizes paid higher salaries to compensate teachers for the additional burdens. However, some of the findings contradict the hypothesis. For example, public school teachers working in schools characterized by fewer family problems, higher levels of teacher influence on policy, and higher job satisfaction also received higher salaries. In conclusion, the results are consistent with the hypothesis that a complex array of factors underlie the processes of teacher supply and demand and hence the determination of salaries. Teachers are not all the same, but are differentiated by their attributes. At the same time, districts and schools are differentiated by virtue of the work environment they offer. Seventeen tables and two figures are included. Appendices contain technical notes, descriptive statistics and parameter estimates for variables, and standard errors for selected tables. Thoughtful, scholarly papers followed by multifaceted reflections and implications sections help the reader answer 21st century questions. This yearbook should be must reading for teacher education faculty and students." Elaine Jarchow, Dean College of Education Texas Tech University "Bravo! These authors carve new mind-sets in education by examining what is important to us (purpose and vision); what ideals, norms, and practices generate high-quality intellectual growth for students and ourselves; and what challenges and struggles help transform teaching, learning, and leading." Mary John O'Hair, Associate Dean College of Education University of Oklahoma The Fifth Annual Yearbook of the Association of Teacher Educators focuses on a topic vital to the welfare of our country: the education of our nation's teachers. This volume provides you with the latest research and guidelines for improving the education of preservice and inservice teachers. One of the most recent goals added to the Goals 2000 program emphasizes the professional development of teachers. In order to be successful, educational reform and increased student learning must be linked to the continued professional development of teachers. This edition of the ATE Yearbook examines four aspects of teacher education: context, process, curriculum, and communication. Each section focuses on one of these themes and includes a chapter that provides the framework and overview, topic and subject studies, and a closing chapter that discusses the theme's implications. Researchers and practitioners examine the following topics: Multicultural education and diversity Subject perspectives of new and experienced teachers School and university partnerships Local communities and global perspectives The information in this yearbook is designed to offer insight and spark debate about the current state of the continuum of professional development.
