This book was released on 2019 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study developed dose response models for determining the probability of eye, respiratory or central nervous system infections from previously conducted studies using Naegleria fowleri, Acanthamoeba spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These opportunistic pathogens have been identified in drinking water and premise plumbing systems, and a lack of dose response models for the appropriate exposure routes of concern has prevented researchers from quantifying the risk they pose to human health. Using the newly developed dose response model for P. aeruginosa, a reverse quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) was completed to determine the threshold concentrations of P. aeruginosa associated with an annual risk of 10-4 for corneal and inhalation exposures. The results indicated that an average concentration of 1 CFU/L in the bulk water could result in an annual risk greater than the guideline set by the Environmental Protection Agency. The threshold concentration responsible for a 10 -4 risk of pneumonia from P. aeruginosa was 11 orders of magnitude greater than the threshold concentration for bacterial keratitis. Modeling all possible exposure routes of concern for opportunistic pathogens in drinking water is critical, as the exposure route dramatically affects the concentrations of concern. This reverse QMRA and future risk assessments that utilize the dose response models developed in this study can be used to inform decisions on drinking water treatment, monitoring protocols, and future plumbing design.

This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a team of international experts, this third edition designed to guide public health personnel or teams in any country that investigates reports of alleged waterborne illnesses. The manual is based on epidemiologic principles and investigative techniques that have been found effective in determining causal factors of disease incidence. The guidelines are presented in the sequence usually followed during investigations and are organized so that an investigator can easily find the information needed in any phase of an investigation. The book services as a guide to: • Develop a waterborne disease surveillance and emergency operations program • Handle illness alerts and water-related complaints that may be related to illness • Interview ill persons, those at risk, and controls • Develop a case definition • Transport water specimens and clinical specimens • Trace sources of contamination • Identify factors responsible for contamination, survival of pathogenic microorganisms or toxic substances, and/or propagation of pathogens • Collate and interpret collected data • Report information about the outbreak This edition has been extensively updated. A section has been added on water not intended for drinking as a source of illness. The chapter on “collection and analysis of data” has been significantly expanded to explain how data is collected and used to suggest possible vehicles, routes, and agents. The book is designed to improve the quality of investigation of outbreaks and disease surveillance. The International Association for Food Protection is a non-profit association of food safety professionals. Dedicated to the life-long educational needs of its Members, IAFP provides Members with an information network through its two scientific journals (Food Protection Trends and Journal of Food Protection), its educational Annual Meeting, international meetings and symposia along with international interaction between food safety professionals.

Book Synopsis Emerging Transplant Infections by : Michele I. Morris
Download or read book Emerging Transplant Infections written by Michele I. Morris and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of transplant medicine has evolved significantly since the first kidney transplant was performed in 1954. Innovations in transplant immunosuppression have lowered the risk of organ rejection so that infectious complications are now the leading cause of hospitalization and mortality after solid organ transplant. Infection is also cited as the leading cause of non-relapse mortality after stem cell transplantation. As transplant centers have recognized the importance of transplant specific expertise in patient outcomes, the field of transplant infectious diseases has expanded into a recognized and highly valued subspecialty. International growth in solid organ and stem cell transplantation has outpaced access to such expertise, with some centers employing microbiology laboratory directors and transplant nephrologists as their lead infectious diseases consultants. This has been a particular challenge as the use of novel immunosuppressive regimens in new geographic and immigrant populations have fueled the emergence of new infection syndromes, with the initial presentation sometimes occurring in this most vulnerable patient population. This digital-first book is designed to meet the needs of practitioners engaged in transplant infectious disease practice who need more depth than they are able to find in UpToDate. It provides an overview of emerging infectious disease challenges with clinically relevant information regarding the epidemiology, diagnosis, management, and prevention of infections in solid organ and stem cell transplant recipients. Each chapter focuses on a clinical syndrome or pathogen with new or emerging implications for transplant patients. Given the rapidly evolving nature of emerging infections and topics in transplant infections, no resource has been published on these increasingly notorious issues; this this text is written by top, global experts who regularly update the material to ensure that readers will always have access to the most cutting edge material available. The editorial team consists of three experienced leaders in the field, all of whom have a strong record of scholarship and publication, as well as an international reputation. All three have focused their academic careers on emerging infectious diseases in transplantation, including a current and a past president of various infectious diseases and transplantation societies. The editors are also experienced reviewers and authors who have collaborated on multiple previous projects. All are committed to this project as a unique opportunity to make an important contribution to their field.
