Book excerpt: Extensive research is being done toward the development of ultra-low-emissions combustors for aircraft gas turbine engines. However, these combustors have an increased susceptibility to thermoacoustic instabilities. This type of instability was recently observed in an advanced, low emissions combustor prototype installed in a NASA Glenn Research Center test stand. The instability produces pressure oscillations that grow with increasing fuel/air ratio, preventing full power operation. The instability behavior makes the combustor a potentially useful test bed for research into active control methods for combustion instability suppression. The instability behavior was characterized by operating the combustor at various pressures, temperatures, and fuel and air flows representative of operation within an aircraft gas turbine engine. Trends in instability behavior versus operating condition have been identified and documented, and possible explanations for the trends provided. A simulation developed at NASA Glenn captures the observed instability behavior. The physics-based simulation includes the relevant physical features of the combustor and test rig, employs a Sectored 1-D approach, includes simplified reaction equations, and provides time-accurate results. A computationally efficient method is used for area transitions, which decreases run times and allows the simulation to be used for parametric studies, including control method investigations. Simulation results show that the simulation exhibits a self-starting, self-sustained combustion instability and also replicates the experimentally observed instability trends versus operating condition. Future plans are to use the simulation to investigate active control strategies to suppress combustion instabilities and then to experimentally demonstrate active instability suppression with the low emissions combustor prototype, enabling full power, stable operation. Book excerpt: Active control of high-frequency (greater than 500 Hz) combustion instability has been demonstrated in the NASA single-nozzle combustor rig at United Technologies Research Center. The combustor rig emulates an actual engine instability and has many of the complexities of a real engine combustor (i.e. actual fuel nozzle and swirler, dilution cooling, etc.) In order to demonstrate control, a high-frequency fuel valve capable of modulating the fuel flow at up to 1kHz was developed. Characterization of the fuel delivery system was accomplished in a custom dynamic flow rig developed for that purpose. Two instability control methods, one model-based and one based on adaptive phase-shifting, were developed and evaluated against reduced order models and a Sectored-1-dimensional model of the combustor rig. Open-loop fuel modulation testing in the rig demonstrated sufficient fuel modulation authority to proceed with closed-loop testing. During closed-loop testing, both control methods were able to identify the instability from the background noise and were shown to reduce the pressure oscillations at the instability frequency by 30%. This is the first known successful demonstration of high-frequency combustion instability suppression in a realistic aero-engine environment. The basic simulation control was extended for general applications, the simulation code was implemented on a massively parallel processor, and two active control techniques (acoustic feedback control and secondary fuel injection control) were investigated. However, the primary focus for active control in this study was on secondary fuel injection techniques, as it had been demonstrated in past experimental studies that this method was more practical. Numerical simulations of fuel injection control were carried out and, in addition, a theoretical model for secondary fuel injection control was developed along with a method to couple the theoretical model to the simulation model. Finally, to implement a robust controller, a fuzzy logic based controller for fuel injection was studied using a simplified problem geometry. To investigate the effects of three-dimensionality, full 3D LES of combustion instability was also carried out.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this thesis is to analyze combustion instabilities in a matrix burner. The various tools that exist for analyzing thermoacoustic instabilities are applied to the matrix burner with multiple flames. The principal goals are to determine the primary causes of combustion instabilities in the burner and to explore ways of controlling such instabilities in order to prevent damage to the burner. To achieve these goals, the stability map of the burner obtained from measurements is analyzed. This is followed by the analysis of the aerodynamics of the cold flow using CFD. Results obtained from CFD are validated with PIV and LDA results from measurements. Critical are the centerline axial velocity inside the combustion chamber and the recirculation zones on the walls of the combustion chamber and those between the various slots of the matrix burner. Cold flow simulations are followed by reactive flow simulations for both gaseous and liquid fuels. A detailed atomization model is developed for the liquid fuel case from experimental data. Two combustion models, namely, the combined finite rate/eddy dissipation model and the finite rate chemistry model are compared in the CFD simulations of combustion instabilities and validation with measurements are done. The latter is chosen over the former because it accounts for chemistry and it is not numerically dissipative. Two CFD softwares, Fluent and CFX are also compared to determine which is better at capturing acoustics. System identification using CFD is used to determine the flame transfer function and the acoustic transfer matrix. This is followed by the use of acoustic forcing and fuel modulation on the primary and pilot in order to limit the amplitude of the instabilities inside the matrix burner combustor. The 1D acoustic network is used to determine the longitudinal eigenmodes of the matrix burner. This is followed by the use of 3D finite element method (FEM) and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) to determine whether a coupling exist between the fluid and structure of the matrix burner combustor and vice versa. Finally, Full harmonic analysis is performed for the rectangular combustor and the results obtained are validated with analytical results. This is followed by the 3D structure modal analysis of the full matrix burner test rig.
