Book excerpt: Further progress in achieving the objectives of the project was made in the period of October 1 to December 31, 1996. In particular, the sublayer model for evaluating the particle deposition in turbulent flows was extended to include the effect of particle rebound. A new more advance flow model for the near wall vortices is also used in these analysis. The computational model for simulating particle transport in turbulent flows was used to analyze the dispersion and deposition of particles in a recirculating flow region. The predictions of the particle resuspension model is compared with the experimental data. It is shown that when the effects of the near wall flow structure, as we as the surface roughness are included the model agrees with the available experimental data. Considerable progress was also made in the direct numerical simulation of particle removal process in turbulent gas flows. Experimental data for transport and deposition of glass fiber in the aerosol wind tunnel was also obtained.

Book excerpt: Coal provides almost 40% of the world's electricity, and despite the understandable concern with respect to the environmental impact associated with coal use, forecasts from the International Energy Agency predict, that worldwide coal use will increase by up to 2% per annum until the year 2OlO. Faced with this increase, it is clearly important that the most efficient and environmentally acceptable clean coal technologies are available. This book is comprised of the proceedings of the Engineering Foundation Conference held in June 1993 in England. The objective of the conference was to present ideas on methods of predicting and reducing the effects of ash deposition in coal conversion systems, highlighting the problems experienced in industry, considering both utilities and industrial plants, and providing a view of the technology of coal ash deposition and its impact. Better techniques are needed to reduce the impact of ash deposition in coal fired plants, and these proceedings should form a reference document for anyone either experiencing slagging or actively engaged in trying to understand or eliminate the phenomenon.

Book excerpt: It was found from the study that the major influential parameters were moisture content in coal, steam pressures throughout a turbine system, boiler efficiency, temperature of preheated air, and temperatures of both main steam and reheated steam. The obtained parametric effects were quantified and translated into a series of empirical correlations of the net efficiency that could be readily utilized by power industries and engineers. Besides the net efficiency, the magnitude of the energy penalty due to the CO2 capture integration was evaluated and also the optimal level of the CO2 capture target was identified. The sensitivity analysis for cost of electricity was also performed in this study based on different scenarios, i.e., base subcritical pulverized coal-fired power plant without the CO2 capture, subcritical pulverized coal-fired power plant with the CO2 capture using alkanolamine solvent, base supercritical pulverized coal-fired power plant without the CO2 capture, and supercritical pulverized coal-fired power plant with the CO2 capture using alkanolamine solvent.

Book excerpt: The computational model for simulating particle motions in turbulent flows was further developed and used to analyze the transport and dispersion of particles in a recirculating flow region. The model for resuspension of particles from surfaces in a gas flow is also further developed; it accounts for the surface adhesion as well as hydrodynamic forces and torques. It includes effects of the structure of near wall turbulent flows as well as surface roughness. In addition, a direct numerical simulation procedure for analyzing the particle removal process in turbulent gas flows is also developed. The sublayer model for evaluating the particle deposition in turbulent flows is being extended to include the effect of particle rebound. Further progress was also made in the experimental study of glass fiber transport and deposition in the aerosol wind tunnel.

Book excerpt: Measurements showed fly ash particle sizes that were much smaller than predicted under a non-fragmentation assumption. Use of a fragmentation model matched mean particle diameters well but did not match the upper tail of the particle sizes where inertial impaction takes place. Assuming 100% capture efficiency for all particles provided reasonably good agreement with measured deposition rates. The observed trend of lower deposition rates under reducing conditions was captured when the gas viscosity was calculated using the probe temperature.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, a model that couples a reduced alkali kinetic mechanism for alkali sulphate formation during biomass combustion with an ash deposition model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques has been presented. Starting with a detailed gas-phase kinetic mechanism for the alkali chemistry, a systematic reduction procedure has been performed using a sensitivity analysis to reduce the reaction mechanism to a level that can be implemented into a CFD calculation. An ash deposition model that takes into consideration the ash-sticking probability and the condensation of potassium salts has been developed. The reduced mechanism and the deposition model developed are implemented into a CFD model to predict ash depositions in a 10 MWth biomass grate furnace. Also, a CFD model to predict the deposition rates for the co-combustion of coal with biomass has been developed. This deposition model is based on the combined sticking probabilities of the ash particle viscosity and the melting behaviour of the ash particles. A Numerical Slagging Index (NSI) is also employed to estimate the degree of the sintering of the deposits. Experimental data from the Entrained Flow Reactor (EFR) at Imperial College, London, have been used to validate the models. The predicted results from both the ash deposition models agreed with the experimental measurements, and the NSI has successfully ranked the investigated coal-biomass mixtures according to their degree of sintering.

Book excerpt: In the period of April 1, 1995 to June 30, 1995, a computational model for simulating particle motions turbulent flow condition is developed. The model was applied to the analysis of particle transport and deposition processes in a circular duct and in a plane recirculating region. The mean gas velocity and turbulence intensity fields were first estimated using the available experimental data, as well as those obtained from an earlier developed CFD code. A model for evaluating particle deposition rate in the presence of gravitational and electrical forces in turbulent flows was also formulated. Results concerning the deposition velocity of particles under various conditions were obtained. It was shown that the model predictions are in good agreement with the available experimental and digital simulation data. Experimental study of glass fiber transport and deposition rate is also initiated.

Book excerpt: In the period of October 1, 1995 to December 31, 1995, additional progress was made in accomplishing the tasks of the project. In particular, the procedure for analyzing the dispersion of elongated particles was developed. The dispersion of ellipsoidal particles in an isotropic turbulent flow was analyzed. It was shown that the simulation data for the particle fluctuation velocity and diffusivity were in good agreement with the theoretical model predictions. The computational model for simulating particle motions in turbulent duct flows was further developed. The model was applied to the dispersion analysis of particles in a circular duct. Progress was also made in the experimental study of glass fiber transport and deposition in the aerosol wind tunnel.

Book excerpt: This investigation details the effects of fuel constituents on ash deposition through systematic experimental and theoretical analyses of fundamental particle experiments and a suite of fuels with widely varying inorganic contents and compositions. The experiments were carried out in the Multifuel Flow Reactor (MFR) at Brigham Young University. Fuels included several biomass fuels (straw, sawdust and mixtures of straw-sawdust with other additives such as Al(OH)3, CaCO3, etc.) and four commercially-used coals (Illinois#6, Powder River Basin--Caballo and Cordero, Blind Canyon, and Lignite--Beulah Zap). The data from the series of experiments quantitatively illustrate the effects of fuel properties, physical and/or chemical, on ash deposition rate mechanisms.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general goal of this project is to provide a fundamental understanding of deposition processes of flyash and pulverized coal particles in coal combustors and coal gasifiers. In the period of April 1 to June 30, 1996, further research progress was made. The computational model for simulating particle motions in turbulent flows was applied to the dispersion and deposition analysis. The study of particle transport and deposition in a circular duct was completed and the major findings are summarized. A detailed model for particle resuspension process in a gas flow is developed. The new model accounts for the surface adhesion, surface roughness, as well as the structure of near wall turbulent flows. The model also accounts for all the relevant hydrodynamic forces and torques exerted on the particle attached to a surface. Progress was also made in the experimental study of glass fiber transport and deposition in the aerosol wind tunnel.
