This thesis examines departure time choice for non-work trips, which constitute an increasingly large proportion of urban trips. Discrete choice models are estimated for four categories of home-based non-work trips using the 1996 activity survey data collected in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The effects of individual and household socio-demographics, employment attributes, and trip characteristics on departure time choice are presented and discussed. The results indicate that departure times for non-work trips are determined for the most part by individual/household socio-demographics and employment characteristics, and to a lesser extent by trip level-of-service characteristics. This suggests that departure times for non-work trips are not as flexible as one might expect and are confined to certain times of day because of overall scheduling constraints. The paper concludes by identifying future methodological and empirical extensions of the current research.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study contributes to the literature by developing continuous-time models for the home-to-work commute timing decisions of full-time workers with flexible and non-flexible work schedules using the hazard-duration structure. Further, the estimated departure time choice models include the effect of travel time at a fine temporal resolution of 15 minutes. In order to generate the travel time data at this resolution, a second set of regression models is developed. The models were estimated using data from the 2000 San Francisco Bay Area Travel Survey. The regression models for inter-zonal travel times produce smoothly time-varying travel duration profiles that capture the effects of temporal and spatial congestion appropriately. Both the hazard duration models indicated a statistically significant effect of commute speed/travel duration on the choice of departure time. Specifically, individuals are less likely to depart home at times when the commute speed is lower (or travel duration is higher). In addition, the model also captures the impact of several other explanatory factors such as individual and household sociodemographic characteristics, employment related characteristics and land use characteristics of the home and work zones on the choice of departure time to work.

The effects of level-of-service, zonal attributes, trip attributes, and socio-demographic variables on recreational attraction-end choice are examined, and the implications of the results for land-use, transportation planning, and air quality analysis are discussed.

All chapters relate to aspects of network equilibrium. Chapter One advocates the use of simulation models for the representation of traffic flow movements at the microscopic level. Chapter Two presents travel demand systems for generating trip matrices from activity-based models, taking into account the entire daily schedule of network users. Chapter Three examines equilibrium strategic choices adopted by the passengers of a congested transit system, carefully addressing line selection at boarding and transfer nodes. Chapter Four provides a critical appraisal of the traditional process that consists in sequentially performing the tasks of trip generation, trip distribution, mode split and assignment, and its impact on the practice of transportation planning. Chapter Five gives an insightful overview of stochastic assignment models, both in the static and dynamic cases. Chapter Eleven discusses an in-depth survey of algorithms for solving shortest path problems, which are pervasive to any equilibrium algorithm. The chapter devotes special attention to the computation of dynamic shortest paths and to shortest hyperpaths. The final chapter considers operations research tools for reducing traffic congestion, in particular introducing an algorithm for solving a signal-setting problem formulated as a bilevel program.
